Mubi (Adamawa) Feb. 9, 2017 (NAN) Dr Sadiq Yahya, Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, Adamawa, on Thursday advised members of the the academic community to conduct more research in agriculture, to further enhance the sector.
Yahya told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola that the agricultural sector was very vast and had the potentialities to bail out the country from its present economic challenges.
He said that relying on other external research would not address the immediate challenges facing the sector in Nigeria.
“The agricultural sector is a vast one with potentialities that could address our economic woes.
“It needs more research that will bring an economic revolution through food security and industrialisation in Nigeria.
“It behooves on those of us in the academic community to carry out research that can address our immediate problems, involving all the process.
“We cannot rely on research from other environment to solve our problems here; therefore, it is imperative to carry out our own research on how to improve the sector.
‘’Though we are not saying that other areas should be dormant, but the sector is critical for our survival,’’ Yahya said.
The rector also urged the Federal Government to improve the capacity of the researchers and provide better environment to ensure improved research.
Yahya said that steps would bring about breakthrough in research and go a long way in contributing to industrialising the nation’s economy.
He assured that the polytechnic would put more efforts toward achieving research breakthrough in line with the vision of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s economic diversification agenda.
The rector urged the government to replace institution’s equipment vandalised by the Boko Haram insurgents in 2014.
Yahya said that the institution had a rich manpower, but required a more conducive environment for its research projects. (NAN)
