Abuja, Feb. 9, 2017 (NAN) The 2017 Civil Procedure Rules of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) are geared toward ensuring speedy dispensation of justice, an official said.

The Deputy Chief Registrar of the court, Mr Olurotimi Daudu, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

The official said the rules would help eliminate or reduce encumbrances to quick dispensation of justice.

“The new rules, the end goal is speedy dispensation of justice in a manner that is fair, timely and efficient.

“If you go through the rules, unlike most rules of courts in Nigeria, this has introduced some measures targeted at eliminating or reducing delays that you have in the course of dispensing justice.

“The primary objective is to ensure that cases that are brought before judges of this court are determined or adjucated upon in a very timely fashion, so that litigants and lawyers are not unnecessarily burdened as we have in conventional courts.’’

NAN reports that the new rules were presented in court to lawyers by President of NICN, Justice Babatude Adejumo in January.

Some of the issues highlighted by the rules include filing and issuance of originating  processes, motions and other applications, entitlements of deceased employees, sexual harassment, and workplace discrimination, among others.

Adejumo had solicited the cooperation of both lawyers and judges in executing the rules effectively; noting that labour cases affected both the economy of the country and lives of many families.

The president said copies of the rules had been sent to all known public institutions in Nigeria; including faculties of law and every library in Nigeria for easy access. (NAN)
