  • Police nab 4 over alleged motorcycle, car theft in Jigawa

    Dutse, July 26, 2017 (NAN) The Police Command in Jigawa said it had arrested two suspected motorcycle thieves, Sadiq Sani,27 and Idris Hassan, 27, all of Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State.

    The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Rasheed Akintunji, disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Wednesday.

    Akintunji said the two suspects confessed to have been stealing motorcycles at bank premises in Dutse.

    “The thieves were arrested on July 3, 2017 when the policemen on patrol in Dutse metropolis sighted and suspected the two young men trying to zoom off on a Lifan motorcycle, Bullet model, at the promises of Guarantee Trust Bank, Dutse.

    He said when the police interrogated them, the suspects said they stole the motorcycle.

    Akintunji said investigation revealed that the motorcycle belonged to one Surajo Muhammad of Madobi village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa.

    He said a master key was recovered from the suspects which they said belonged to their gang leader, one Saddam, also a resident of Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State.

    The commissioner said the suspects would be charged to Court as soon as investigation was concluded.

    He said the command  had also arrested another two suspects, Mohammed Sa’idu, 27, of Yakasai Quarters, Kano city, Kano State and Usman Ahmed, 27, of Gumel town of Jigawa, for allegedly stealing three cars.

    He said one of the cars with registration number: GML 155J A belonged to Muhammad Baru of Gumel town, Jigawa, and the second one with registration number: AZ 369 NSR belonged to Isa Jejeri of the same address.

    Akintunji said the owner of the third vehicle had yet to be known.

    He said luck ran out of the thieves when the police on patrol around Garki highway of Jigawa arrested them.(NAN)

    Dutse, July 24, 2017 (NAN) The Police Command in Jigawa said it had arrested a notorious armed robbery kingpin in the state, Surajo Abdu, 27 alias Mohammed.

    The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Rasheed Akintunde, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Monday.

    Akintunde said that the suspect was arrested at Limawa Fulani Settlement at Kwalam in Taura Local Government Area of the state, adding that he had been terrorising the people of the state.

    According to him, the suspect was arrested on July 20, following a tip-off.

    The commissioner said the police had been trailing the suspect for a long time, adding that he would soon be charged to court.

    In a related development, the commissioner said that the police had arrested another suspect, Usman Mohammed, who was involved in a robbery in the state on May 18.

    He said that the robbery took place on Kanya Babba-Gujungu in Garki Local Government Area. (NAN)

    Dutse, July 23, 2017 (NAN) Gov. Muhammad Badaru of Jigawa, on Sunday, urged Muslims to intensify prayers on the economic recovery of Nigeria and the quick recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari from ill health.

    Badaru made this call during the 60-million-naira Fund Raising for the building of the state secretariat of Jama’atul Izalatil Bidiah Wa’ikamatil Sunnah (JIBWIS) in Dutse.

    He said, “we need prayers from all and sundry to take the country out  the present economic crisis, as well as the quick recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is on medical vacation in London”.

    The governor said the existing economic recession predated the  All Progressives Congress (APC) administration under Buhari, adding that the  current government was doing  its best to rebuild the economy.

    According to him, the Buhari administration places emphasis on the principle of ‘growing the food we eat and using what we produce’ as a means of revamping the economy.

    Earlier, the National Chairman of the JIBWIS, Sheikh Abdullahi Balalau, implored the Federal Government to investigate the recent crisis between herders and some communities in Mambilla area of Taraba.

    Balalau explained that a high-powered commission of inquiry would be necessary to ensure that culprits are identified and duly punished, describing the incident as a negation of the tenets of major religions.

    He also called on the government to create more job opportunities for the youth and put measures in place that would guarantee  food security for the masses in view of the rising cost of foodstuffs in the country. (NAN)

    Dutse, July 20, 2017 (NAN) Mohammed Kyari, the Comptroller of Immigration in Jigawa has denied extortion of cattle breeders in border towns by officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

    He told newsmen in Dutse on Friday that he was not aware of the matter.

    “Nobody has ever brought this matter to my knowledge; how can my people do that after all we are all Nigerians, however I will investigate the matter.

    “If it is found that the matter is true, the culprits will be brought to book.

    “I have invited the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah, we are going to sit down together with him and he will assist us in our investigation,” the Comptroller said

    The Chairman, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Jigawa Chapter, Alhaji Musa Gagarawa, had accused officials of the service of extorting money and animals from the association’s members at the border areas.

    Gagarawa told newsmen in Dutse on Friday that officials operating around Malammamadori, Gumel and Maigatari Local Government areas taxed them of monies ranging from N6, 000 to N10, 000 each time they were at the border towns.

    He said that failure to comply, led to the surrender of an animal from the herds that would be commensurate with the amount if they did not have the money to give to the officials.

    The chairman said that the immigration officials claimed the tax on the herdsmen was because they were grazing in border areas. (NAN)

    Dutse, July 21, 2017 (NAN) The Jigawa Government has set aside N164 million to provide equipment and execute capital projects in science secondary schools across the state.

    Malam Yakubu Ado, the Executive Secretary, Jigawa Science and Technical Schools Board (JSTSB), disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Friday.

    He said that the money would be spent on 11 schools in the local government areas in the three senatorial districts of the state.

    Ado said that N98 million would be spent on building more hostels and classrooms, while N8 million would be spent on furniture.

    He said that N53 million would be expended on provision of ICT materials, while N5 million would be used to buy beddings for students.

    The executive secretary said that there were 8, 613 students in the state science and technical schools, adding that 2, 330 were female, while 6, 283 were male.

    Ado said that the state was determined to produce many doctors, engineers and scientists, hence the determination to invest big sum of money in science students. (NAN)

    Dutse, July 10, 2017 (NAN) Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN), an NGO, on Monday said it spent 1.2 million dollars on programmes toward reduction of maternal, new-born and child morbidity and mortality in Jigawa.

    The PPFN Director General, Dr Ibrahim Muhammad, disclosed this in an interview
    with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse as the world marked
    World Population Day.

    He said PPFN was working in collaboration with International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) to ensure that women, regardless of their economic status, had access to healthcare services.

    He added that “we are working to ensure that women, regardless of their economic status, have access to healthcare services.”

    He explained that the NGO had been training women in the 27 local government areas of the state for about five years, who in turn became Community Resource Persons on health related issues.

    The director general said women engaged in house-to-house visit to educate fellow
    women in the state, particularly the pregnant ones, on the importance of visiting health facilities to seek healthcare services.

    According to him, the PPFN has trained more than 260 women in 90 hard-to-reach communities in the state.

    Muhammad commended the state government for its support to the NGO in achieving its goals. (NAN)

  • NOA, NDLEA collaborate to fight drug abuse

    Dutse, July 8, 2017 (NAN) The Director, National Orientation Agency (NOA) in jigawa, Mallam Shuibu Karamba, said the agency would collaborate with the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the fight against drug abuse.

    Karamba made this disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Friday.

    Karamba said that Gov. Muhammad Badaru was worried on the rampant use and consumption of dangerous drugs among youths in the state, and had expressed his determination to fight the menace.

    The director said that the State Government had invited stakeholders to a round table conference on how to address the problem.

    According to him, the NDLEA alone cannot address the situation; it needs to join hands with other stakeholders such as NOA.

    Karamba said that so far, NOA had organised campaigns against drug abuse in Hadejia and Gumel emirates, adding that similar campaigns would be launched in the remaining three emirates of Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse.

    The NOA director called on all and sundry to support the agency in the fight against the use of dangerous drugs, which could ruin the society. (NAN)

    Dutse, July 6, 2017 (NAN) A 40-year-old man, Ibrahim Yusuf, who allegedly raped  four minors in Kangere village, Birnin Kudu Local Government of Jigawa, has been apprehended by members of the community.

    The State Commissioner for women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Ladi Dansure, who confirmed the development in Dutse on Thursday, said three of the girls were aged  four, five and six.

    She added that three out of the four minors were from the same father.

    According to her, when the villagers noticed the act, they immediately apprehended the suspect and reported the matter to the police and her ministry.

    The commissioner explained that the suspect, who operates a cinema house in the village, used the premises to perpetrate the act.

    Dansure alleged that Yusuf lured the girls into the cinema house where he entertained them with different films for free before raping them.

    “This is barbaric and animalistic,” she said, adding that the matter had been forwarded to the police and National Human Right Commission for appropriate action.

    When contacted, spokesman of the state Police Command, SP Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the arrest and said the man had been charged to court. (NAN)

  • Jigawa Council Polls: JSIEC declares APC candidates winners ‘unopposed’

    Dutse, July 2, 2017 (NAN) The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC)  on Sunday declared as winners, APC chairmanship candidates in all the 27 Local Government Areas of the state that contested Saturday’s council polls.

    In a press statement signed by the Chairman of JISIEC, Alhaji Ahmed Sani, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse, the commission said the APC candidates won the elections ‘unopposed’.

    It said that the election was conducted in line with the electoral laws, adding that all the candidates were declared winners by Returning Officers in their respective local government areas.

    The commission thanked security agencies and relevant stakeholders for their support before, during and after the polls.

    The APC candidates  declared winners were Alhaji Umar Musa, Auyo Local Government Council;  Hudu Babangida, Buji Council;  Muhammad Sani (Babura),  Muhammad Dole (Birniwa),  Muhammad Abdullahi (Birninkudi); Ibrahim Yargaba  (Dutse), Ibrahim Ya’u (Gagarawa),  Aminu Gumel (Gumel), Gali Muktar (Garki) and AbdulMalik Fagam (Gwaram)

    Also declared were  Jaji Adiyani (Guri), Abdullahi Daurawa (Gwiwa),  Ibrahim Muhammad (Hadejia),  Sa’idu Abdu (Jahun,  Ahmad Marke (Kaugama),  Salisu Garba (Kirkasama), Kiyawa Isyaku Adamu (Kiyawa), Garba Abdullahi (Kafinhausa) and  Jamilu Zaki (Kazaure).

    Others were  Sani Dahiru (Maigatari),  Muhammad Agufa (Miga), Sabo Musa (Malammadori),  Salisu Sani (Roni),  Abdulrashid Illa (Ringim),  Jafaru Mohammed (Suletankarkar),  Abdulmajid Isma’il (Taura), Dauda Dan-Auwa (Yankwashi) and Jaji Adiyani (Guri,

    NAN reports that opposition parties in the state had boycotted the election, citing a court injunction stopping the conduct of the polls.

    A Federal High Court had on June 12, issued an order restraining JSIEC from conducting the elections, pending the determination of a case before it.

    However, the State Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, told newsmen on Saturday after casting his vote that he was not aware of any such court order.

    Reacting to the declaration of the result, former gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in the state, Malam Aminu Ringim, described the election as an illegal exercise.

    “As law-abiding citizens, we did not participate in the election because of the court order, so this is an illegal election.

    “We are therefore waiting till Sept.20, the date the court has set aside to hear the substantive case we filed before the it,” he said. (NAN)

    Dutse, June 15, 2017 (NAN) Alhaji Sani Babura, Executive Secretary, Jigawa Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), said the state government has disbursed N2.26 million to victims of Marmara farmers/herdsmen clash in Guri Local Government Area.

    Babura made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Thursday.

    He said the amount was given to 60 people who lost their farm products and personal items as a result of the clash.

    The SEMA boss stated that one person died, while houses and property worth millions of naira were destroyed during the incident.

    Babura expressed sadness over the persistent clashes between farmers and herdsmen at Guri Local Government Area and some parts of the state.

    He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to address the ugly trend.

    Babura appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other International Donor agencies to come to the aid of the victims. (NAN)
