Kano, June 23, 2017 (NAN) Traders at the Sabon-Gari Market in Kano have called on the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) to evacuate the heaps of refuse that have taken over Yan’ Kura roundabout, near the market.
Some of the traders told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Friday that the call was necessary in order to avert a possible outbreak of diseases at the market.

One of the traders, Malam Aminu Bala, said the refuse which had been there for more than two months, had become a source of concern to both traders and customers.

He said many motorists coming to the market through that direction have stopped plying the road due to the offensive odour oozing out from the refuse heaps.

“The Yan’Kura roundabout is an eyesore because refuse has taken over the roundabout, while some people even defecate there, due to lack of public conveniences in the area,” he said.

Another trader, Lawan Maidoya, said the roundabout had become a refuse dump, as most of the refuse from the market is being dumped there.

“We have complained severally but nothing has been done to address the situation,” Maidoya said.

He noted that most of the traders operating their businesses around the area were still there because they have nowhere else to go, otherwise, they would have since relocated to a safer place.

Maidoya, however, called on the state government to come to their aid by ensuring that the refuse was immediately evacuated, to save them from a possible outbreak of diseases at the market.

He also called on the state government to construct Public conveniences in the area, to stop open defecation around the Yan’kura market.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of REMASAB, Alhaji Arabiyu Garba, said the board had mobilised its workers and vehicles for immediate evacuation of the refuse in the area.

“We are working based on schedule, so we have mobilised our people and vehicles to the area.

“As I am talking to you now, we are also working in some other places in the Kano metropolis,’’ Garba added. (NAN)
