    Kano, June 9, 2024 (NAN) Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has promised to reposition education in the state to make it deliver on expected targets.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Yusuf spoke in Kano while declaring a State of Emergency in Education on Saturday in Kano.
    He said it was unfortunate that the previous administration did not do much to provide a very conducive environment to teaching and learning in public schools in the state.
    Yusuf said such action left no fewer than 4.7 million students sitting on bare floors in primary schools across the state.
    The governor said there were deficiency of basic teaching tools, inadequate resources, and the struggles of teachers and students with outdated equipment.
    Yusuf said with the support of critical stakeholders such as National Union of Teachers his administration would achieve the delivery of quality education by its institutions.
    He said his administration would deploy enough resources to tackle the challenges of out of school children in the state.
    “My administration is committed to making education a top priority and a lasting legacy for future generations”, he said.

    He described  the appropriation of school premises for private commercial ventures by the previous administration as flagrant breach of communal trust. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, June 9, 2024 (NAN) The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission says that it has commenced investigation into the alleged scam that characterised the recent disbursement of empowerment funds to street hawkers by governor Abba Yusuf.

    The Commission’s chairman, Muhuyi Rimin-Gado, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Kano that the commission was investing the matter to identify and bring those responsible to justice.

    “The commission is investigating the matter and anyone found involved would be brought to justice.

    “The commission is determined to prevent corruption from undermining the integrity of the empowerment initiative of the government and ensure that justice is served,” Rimin Gado’’, told NAN.

    The probe follows a viral video showing where some officials allegedly coerced beneficiaries into surrendering a significant portion of the N50, 000 grants each of them received during the disbursement ceremony.

    NAN reports that Yusuf had recently presented N50,000 each to 465 street hawkers to boost their businesses.

    However, in a 60-second video, one of the beneficiaries, Malam Nura Isa, alleged that he was coerced by officials to return N45, 000 from the N50,000 cash given to him.

    Isa alleged that he was part of about 100 beneficiaries cornered by officials, who demanded that they must comply “in their own interest.”

    It was also gathered that most of those shortlisted to benefit from the scheme were denied access to the venue of the event while their benefits were handed over to impostors. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, June 8, 2024( NAN) The  Kano State Government says  it has employed 5,000 teachers into the state civil service to revitalise the education sector.
    Gov. Abba Yusuf stated this while declaring a state of emergency on  education on Saturday in Kano.
    He emphasised the need for quality  personnel to manage public schools in the state.
    Yusuf said the initiative is  aimed at providing the required manpower for  public schools in the state to provide quality education.
    The governor  said that the era of pupils receiving lectures under harsh conditions was  over.
    He  pledged to ensure a total rehabilitation and provision of furniture for public schools in the state.
    “The declaration of a state of emergency in education is a bold step towards addressing the challenges facing the sector.
    “The government’s commitment to providing basic learning materials and infrastructure will go a long way in improving the quality of education in the state,” he said.
    Yusuf said the  move was  to ensure that every child in the state  had access to a conducive learning environment.
    He used the opportunity to highlight the crisis facing the state’s education sector, painting a stark picture of a system in dire need of reform.
    “Over 4.7 million pupils are forced to sit on bare floors to learn, while 400 schools have only one teacher for all classes and subjects,” he said.
    Yusuf   alleged that the immediate past administration closed down schools while  those vandalised were converted to commercial premises.
    “Teachers struggle with outdated and insufficient  basic learnung equipment, while clean water and sanitation are lacking in many schools,” he said.
    The governor accused the past administration of profiting from school lands over investing in education, leaving a legacy of neglect.
    He promised to tackle the multi-faceted problems facing public  education in the state head on.
    These, he said, include  the  shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate training programmes and socio-economic challenges faced by students.
    “It’s time for  investment in public education and a commitment to providing quality learning environment for all,” Yusuf said.( NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, June 6,2024( NAN) Kano State Government has earmarked about  N11 billion on the constricting of  70 kilometer access roads  networks in semi-urban areas in different parts of the state.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Abba Yusuf, said this on Thursday in Kano during the inauguration of  road projects in Rijiyar Gwangwan and Mil Goma in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of  the state.

    He said the projects would be executed in partnership with Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and Lives & Livelihood Fund (LLF).

    This would be done through the Kano State Agro-pastoral Development Project(KSADP) under Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA).

    He said his administration was determined to execute life-changing infrastructure for rural communities in the state.

    Yusuf said the state government would carefully monitor the execution of the projects to ensure strict adherence to contract specifications.

    He called on the host communities to cooperate with the contractors to ensure the successful completion of the projects.

    The governor is emphasising the importance of community cooperation to ensure the successful execution of the projects, which are expected to bring significant benefits to rural communities in the state. (NAN) ( www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, June 6, 2024 (NAN) The Kano Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), said it generated a total of N50.7 billion from January to May as revenue.

    It said the amount generated was a testament to its intensified efforts to curb illegal trades and smuggling in the area.

    The Area Comptroller of Customs, Mr Dauda Chana, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Thursday that the command was implementing measures to enhance security at the border posts.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Kano area command covers Kano and Jigawa.

    He explained that the area command would ensure  a 100 per cent physical examination of goods to prevent offensive items from entering the country.

    According to him, to combat smuggling, the command is engaging traditional rulers in border communities to encourage residents to provide valuable information on suspicious activities.

    “Strategic deployments of officers have also been made to apprehend those involved in illegal trades.

    “We remain resolute in our commitment to eradicating illegal activities that pose a threat to our society,“he  said.

    “This achievement demonstrates the command’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s borders and economy, and its determination to surpass revenue targets,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, May 6, 2024 ( NAN) An  advocacy group, Patriotic Volunteers for Good Governance, has called on the National Assembly members to take a pay cut that will reflect the present economic realities.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group’s National President, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, made the plea at a news conference in Kano on Thursday.

    Alhaji said that politicians must lead by example by voluntarily reducing their salaries.

    He said the demand by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for a minimum wage of N494, 000 was unfair and insensitive to the current economic realities.

    The president urged the NLC to accept the federal government’s offer of N60, 000 to prevent job losses.

    Alhaji emphasised that the NLC’s demand might not be sustainable and would drain the country’s resources, leading to hyperinflation and stagflation.

    He called on labour leaders to consider the fate of other Nigerians and the social and economic repercussions of their demands.

    Alhaji advocated for a drastic reduction in the cost of governance, adding that the cost drains so much of the country’s wealth.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, June 5, 2024 ( NAN)  Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State on Wednesday, empowered 465 street hawkers with N50,000 each to  support vulnerable groups, particularly youths and women.
    The  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Yusuf at the presentation of cash to the beneficiaries,  said that the empowerment programme is  targeted at  nine clusters within Kano metropolis.
    He said that the exercise main aim is to enhance the beneficiaries’ trades and skills, promoting self-sufficiency and dignity.
    The beneficiaries, who specialises in hawking various items like car decorations, accessories and kitchen utensils, were commended by the Governor for their resilience and determination to earn a decent living.
    Yusuf emphasised his administration’s  priority to support vulnerable groups, including youths and women to improve their socio-economic status.
    “This initiative followed a previous empowerment programme for 5,200 women, who received N50,000 each, equivalent to N26 million.
    “The programme has yielded positive results with beneficiaries experiencing increased socio-economic status.
    The Governor urged the beneficiaries to utilise the funds judiciously, expanding their businesses to generate a positive multiplier effect in the community.( NAN)( www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, June 5, 2024 (NAN) The Police in Kano StATE have arrested 19 suspects for alleged armed robbery, cattle rustling and kidnapping in different parts of the state.

    This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesman of the command SP Abdullahi Kiyawa.

    Kiyawa gave the names of the suspects as:
    Auwal Fulani, aged 27 years old, Abdullahi Salisu, aged 28 years old, Halilu Adamu, aged 37 years old and Abdulkarim Harisu, aged 37 years old.

    Others were Alhassan Abubakar, aged 20 years old, Sani Abdullahi, aged 45 years old, Tasiu Jamilu, aged 25 years old, Sani Muhammad, aged 45 years old and Auwal Umar, aged 25 years old.

    He said the police also arrested Usman Abdullahi, aged 26 years old, Mustapha Umar, aged 25 years, Nazifi Abdullahi, aged 30, Isa Abbas, aged 21, Junaidu Hamisu aged 33, and Abdulrazak Aliyu, aged 22 years old.

    Kiyawa said the weapons recovered from the suspects included: 2 AK-47 rifles, one Smoke Pistol, one Pump Action rifle, 26 rounds of 7.2mm live ammunition, 17 live cartridges, 2 motor vehicles, 16 rams, dangerous weapons and house-breaking implements,

    He added that the feat was achieved through the efforts of the State Police Command in checkmating violent and criminal activities in all parts of the state to ensure the safety and security of the residents.

    Kiyawa said that the command’s robust crime prevention patrols led to the arrest of the suspects.

    He said all the suspects were presently undergoing detailed investigation at the Criminal Investigation Department of the command after which they would be charged to court.

    Kano, June 5, 2024 ( NAN) The Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested five suspects in Kano for alleged vandalism and theft.

    The Commandant of the Corps in Kano State, Mohammad Lawal-Falala, said this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Kano.

    He said the suspects were apprehended by the anti-vandalism unit of the corps during midnight patrols.

    Two suspects, Adnan Umar (26) and Musa Shuayb (24), were caught vandalising streetlight armored cables on IBB Way, Fagge/Kofar Wambai new market.

    He said they were also attempting to steal three rolls of copper wire.

    In a separate incident, according to him, three suspected motorcycle thieves, including a receiver of the stolen motorcycle were arrest by the corps.

    The suspects are Saminu Magaji (19), Haruna Idris (22), and Ahmed Abubakar (38), the receiver. The Commandant noted that two other suspects are still at large.

    He alleged that the suspects, who hail from Gwammaja, Dala LGA, Kano State, specialised into homes, stealing motorcycles and personal belongings.

    He said the suspects were being investigated and will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
