Lagos, Dec. 20, 2016 (NAN) A business woman, Chinyere Eze, who allegedly failed to produce the person she stood surety for, was on Tuesday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Thirty-six-year old Eze, who resides in Agege area of Lagos State, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and perversion of justice.
The Prosecutor, George Nwosu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Dec. 5 at the Divisional Crime Office, Dopemu Police Station, Agege, Lagos.
Nwosu alleged that the accused conspired with one person now at large to obstruct and pervert the course of justice.
“The accused stood as a surety for one Sunny Onu who was arrested for alleged assault and stealing.
“Onu was granted a N50, 000 bail and the accused, who stood surety promised to produce him on Dec.6, 2016, but failed to do so,’’ he said.
The offences contravened Section 97 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Section 97 (1) provided seven years imprisonment for perversion of justice.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Mr A. A. Adesanya, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Adesanya adjourned the case to Jan. 26 for trial.
