Sokoto July 26, 2017 (NAN) The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Wednesday urged the state government to establish talent discovery units in primary and secondary schools, to encourage talented students aspire for greatness.
The assembly also said the government should reinforce guidance and counseling units in the schools, to guide students in their pursuit of quality education.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the resolution followed a motion moved by Alhaji Sani Yakubu (APC- Gudu) seeking to identify and nurture talents early enough in the state school system.
Yakubu said the idea was “in view of the importance of education in every meaningful sector that wish to strive to progress, excel and also keep in line with global innovation and challenges.
“Accordingly, lack of early identification and development of talent mostly jeopardize the chances of such students to aspire to greater heights and explore their full potentials.
“Therefore, talent discovery units if established will go along way in identifying such talented pupils who only require mentoring, guidance and support to excel and become experts in their field of studies.”
The lawmaker noted the state has been blessed with abundance of such talented students at every level of education.
“As such, the need to take this opportunity by creating these talent units to identify and develop the capacities of such persons within the shortest possible time is imperative,” Yakubu said.
The Majority Leader, Alhaji Garba Bello (APC- Yabo), supported the motion and said apart from the talent unit, government should strengthen guidance and counseling units in schools.
He said, “this is in order to guide and fully train the children to achieve the desired objective of the motion as proposed.
“So there is the need to ensure that in every school a functional guidance and counseling unit exists in order to identify the talents among our students,” Bello said.
NAN reports that the assembly unanimously adopted the motion during the sitting, presided by the Speaker, Alhaji Salihu Maidaji.(NAN)
