Omu-Aran (Kwara) July 26, 2017 (NAN) The Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) on Wednesday advocated that more women should be encouraged to participate in partisan politics to ensure gender balance and equality.
Mrs Bosede Adimabua, WOWICAN Chairperson in Kwara, made the call during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.
Adimabua, a prophetess, said the call was informed by the need to increase the slots for women in political appointments.
According to her, such development will give the generality of Nigerian women a sense of belonging in nation building.
“It is only with a high number of women participating in partisan politics that such increase can become a reality,” she said.
Adimabua said there was the need to allocate more leadership positions to women lawmakers in the current National Assembly (NASS) to move the country forward.
She said that such development would afford women lawmakers to be part of policy-formation that would foster the desired change and socioeconomic transformation of the country.
Adimabua said that the role of women as politicians and mothers of the nation in ensuring sustenance of its democratic system could not be over-emphasised.
She said that such would ensure equity, fairness and transparency in the affairs of the NASS.
“The role played by the womenfolk in ensuring the smooth conduct of the 2015 general elections still remain evergreen, and must be recognised.
“Our female legislators deserve recognition having gone through the rigours of electioneering at their respective districts and constituencies that culminated in their elections.
“I think it is not out of place if the women among the lawmakers, irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political backgrounds, are considered for more leadership positions.
“This is the only and sure way of boosting their morale, and for them to give a good account of their representation and stewardship to the nation and their respectively constituencies,” she said.
Adimabua expressed the association’s readiness to evolve workable synergy with the government, to develop the state.
She also advocated more recognition for Christians in the state’s political and civic appointments.
Adimabua advised those at the helms of affairs of the nation to close ranks; imbibe tolerance and unity.
“Our God is a God of kindness who will not accept anything from us except it is pure, clean and straightforward.
“We need to urgently return to God in righteousness to move the country forward,” she said. (NAN)
