Borehole
By Chidinma Ewunonu-Aluko
Ibadan, Feb. 15, 2017 (NAN) The Rotary Club of Ibadan-Akobo has provided a borehole for residents of Olajuwon community in Akinyele Loal Government Area of Oyo State.
The President of the club, Mr Olusegun Akanbi, made this known in a statement in Ibadan on Wednesday.
Akanbi, who said the gesture was part of the association’s social responsibility mandate, added that the community and its environs had lacked clean water for years.
“Water, water everywhere, but the same cannot be said of the provision and access to safe drinking water by the residents of Olajuwon community and its environs, as many currently suffer untold hardships in their quest for potable water and sanitation.
“A school of thought describes good governance as a participative manner of governing that functions in a responsible, accountable and transparent manner.
“It’s based on the principles of legitimacy for the purpose of promoting the rights of individual citizens.
“A community like Olajuwon should ordinarily not encounter much difficulty in meeting the water needs of its populace.
“But this surprisingly has been the case, due to acutely inadequate supply from the public water agency.
“Many homes have never had pipe-borne water and where it used to exist, the pipes have for long run dry,” the president said.
According to Akanbi, Rotary is dedicated to building international relationships, improving lives and creating a better world to support peace efforts and ending polio.
Other areas of commitment, he said, included promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene, saving mothers and children, supporting education and growing local economies. (NAN)
