    Rigging

    By Azubuike Okeh

Port Harcourt, Oct. 5, 2016 (NAN) Gov. Nyesom Wike if Rivers has said that supporters of his administration will resist any attempt from any quarters to rig the rerun elections in the state.

Wike made the disclosure at the commencement of the Bonny Jetty reconstruction project at the Bille/Bonny/Nembe Waterfront in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

He said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was plotting to rig the senate and state assembly rerun elections tentatively scheduled for October.

“The plan of INEC and its cohorts to transplant the Edo State rigging model in Rivers State will fail, the people of the state will resist them.

“Anyone planning to steal our mandate will be resisted, nobody can intimidate us, those having such plan will rig themselves into the water,’’ he said.

Wike accused some prominent politicians in the state of jubilating after the pronouncement of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the Edo gubernatorial elections.

“They are already celebrating and plotting to repeat what they did in Edo; anybody suffering from malaria can say anything but nobody will use the police to rig here.

“If you want to take our mandate by force, you will go by force, our people must remain vigilant because INEC may want to take us unawares,’’ he said.

On the Bonny Jetty reconstruction project, Wike said that the project would ensure quality and safe water transport for the inhabitants of the area.

“This project is also in fulfillment of the promise we made to the people of the area during the electioneering campaign,’’ he said.(NAN)

    Synergy
    By Oluwaseun Fadugba
Lagos, Oct. 5, 2016 (NAN) Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, President, Women Arise for Change Initiative, on Wednesday called for more synergy with the police to end violence against women and children in the society.
Speaking during a visit to the Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos, Odumakin urged the police to ensure accelerated prosecution of perpetrators of violence against women and children.
“There is need for more synergy between Women Arise Group and the Police, especially in addressing violence against women and making prosecution possible and achieving justice.
“We need to take proactive steps for collaborative advocacy which will target significant reduction of incidences,” she said.
The woman activist said the group would engage the police at the advocacy level to sensitize authorities and the public on the alarming rate of gender abuse and violence against children in the society.

A new date will be announced in the coming days. The results of the last election were annulled amid allegations of vote manipulation.

  • Paris Climate Agreement triggered to come into force in 30 days

    NAN-F-20

    Climate

New York, Oct. 5, 2016 (dpa/NAN) The Paris Climate Agreement will go into force in 30-days after 72 countries accounting for more than 56 per cent of global greenhouse emissions have ratified the deal.

The UN’s climate agency which said this on Wednesday, added that it had reached required thresholds.

The deal was triggered to enter into force after the European Union, seven EU states and other countries handed over documents ratifying the climate agreement to the UN.

It said that was the last step for countries towards officially joining the agreement.

“On Oct. 5, 2016, the threshold for entry into force of the Paris Agreement has been achieved,” the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said.

The latest round of ratifications cleared the last hurdle to reach the required global greenhouse gas emissions threshold triggering a 30-day countdown to the deal’s entry into force.

The agreement requires two conditions to enter into force: firstly, that it has been ratified by at least 55 countries, which was met in September.

Secondly, those countries account for at least 55 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

“UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, supporter of the climate agreement, was “very encouraged by the tremendous positive support from a broad coalition of countries” to bring it into force’’, Farhan Haq, Ban’s deputy spokesman said. (dpa/NAN)

  • UN confirms airstrike hit Syrian aid convoy near Aleppo

    NAN-F-19

    Airstrike

Istanbul, Oct. 5, 2016 (dpa/NAN) An attack on an aid convoy that killed more than 20 civilians in September near Aleppo, shattering a short-lived truce, was definitively from an airstrike, UN experts said on Wednesday.

“I can verify that the convoy was bombed. In our analysis, we saw that it was an airstrike,’’ Lars Bromley of the UN satellite observation programme (UNOSAT), said.

Bromleym who said the findings were based on satellite images provided to the UN by the U.S. State Department, however, provided no information as to who was behind the Sept. 19 airstrike.

Only the Syrian and allied Russian air forces regularly carry out airstrikes in rebel-held areas of Syria, although the U.S. has also carried out occasional raids aimed at al-Qaeda-lnked forces.

The head of the opposition-leaning Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel-Rahman, said he suspected Russian involvement.

“I have information that Russian planes carried out the attack”, he told dpa without giving details.

The development came as the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said it had officially classified rebel-held eastern Aleppo as a besieged area.

Some 250,000 to 300,000 people are thought to remain in Eastern Aleppo, which has been subject to devastating air raids and artillery shelling, including repeated strikes on its hospitals recently.

The Syrian army said it would “reduce the number of air and artillery strikes” on besieged eastern Aleppo in order to facilitate civilians wishing to leave to safe areas.

However, the UN has said that civilians were unable to leave the area due to the presence of the Syrian army at supposed safe crossing points that were announced by Russia at the end of July.

Officials from Germany, France, Britain, Italy and the U.S. were due to hold talks in Berlin on the situation in Syria.

“We must find ways to finally end this madness, this killing and dying in Syria,” German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said.

Besides Steinmeier, no other foreign ministers are expected at the Berlin talks, which will take place at the level of political directors.

The humanitarian situation in Aleppo since the collapse of last month’s week-long ceasefire has led UN and western officials to call for urgent action.

On Monday, the U.S. said it was suspending its cooperation with Russia on Syrian issues, accusing Moscow of failing to live up to its commitments and to rein in forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad,

“Not far from Aleppo, airstrikes by suspected Turkish jets on a Kurdish village in northern Syria killed at least 19 civilians.

“Three children were among the dead in the village of Thalthana, located north-west of the Islamic State-controlled town of al-Bab’’, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

As at the time of the report, there was no comment from Ankara or Washington.

Turkish forces and allied Syrian rebels entered Northern Syria in August to attack Islamic State and Kurdish militants.

In recent weeks the campaign has turned its focus on the jihadist group, after the U.S. urged Ankara, its NATO ally, to refrain from further attacks on the Kurds.

The US has allied with the Syrian Kurds against Islamic State since 2014, and its airstrikes have enabled the Kurdish forces to capture most of the territory the extremist group held along the Turkish border. (dpa/NAN)

  • Education: Oyo teachers demand 26 percent of annual budget

    NAN-H-123
    Demand
    By Suleiman Shehu
Ibadan, Oct. 5, 2016 (NAN) The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State on Wednesday demanded that 26 per cent of the state’s annual budget be devoted to the funding of the education sector.

Mr Waheed Olojede, the Oyo State NUT Secretary, stated this on Wednesday in Ibadan during the celebration of the World Teachers Day.

Olojede appealed to the Oyo State Government to make funding of education a priority in order to improve the standards in the schools.

He said that the neglect of the sector was responsible for the falling standard of education.

Olojede urged the state government to ensure that the per centage  of annual budget devoted to the education sector was implemented.

“Some state government claim to have budgeted 26 per cent for education but on enquiry on the level of implementation, one would discover that only 10 per cent get to the target.

“Education determines the success of any nation and no nation can develop beyond the level of its education.

“Government should do everything possible in terms of funding of education by providing necessary infrastructure.

“These include provision of instructional materials and teachers’ welfare among others so that the teachers and pupils would be able to learn and teach in good environment,’’ Olojede said.

The NUT secretary called on parents not to leave the responsibility of the students to government alone, adding that it was a collective responsibility.

He also appealed to parents to provide necessary learning materials for  their children, saying teachers were ready and committed to work. (NAN)
