  • WINCONFERENCE Nigeria seeks to empower women in leadership — Partner

    NAN-H-49
    Conference
    By Sumaila Ogbaje
Abuja, Oct. 8, 2016 (NAN) Human Resource Working Partners (HURWORPS), an NGO, is organising the  maiden conference of  Women International Networking (WIN) in Africa, aimed at empowering women for success in leadership.

Mrs Charity Ohadiugha, the Managing Director of HURWORPS, made this known at a news conference on the sideline of the installation of Matrons and  Long Service Award organised jointly with Ohuhu Welfare Union  (Women’s Wing), Abuja, on Saturday.

Ohuhu Welfare Union, a socio-cultural organisation of people from Ohuhu Clan in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia.

Its focus is to promote the welfare and well-being of its members through various enlightenment and empowerment programmes.

Ohadiugha, who is also the Executive Partner, WINCONFERENCE Nigeria, was also installed as a matron of the union alongside two others, Mrs Nnennaya Ukeje and Mrs Ogonnaya Okeagu.

According to her, the vision of WIN is to model, empower, develop and connect women globally.

WINCONFERENCE, she said, provides a platform and an environment that helps individuals and organisations to move forward, realise their potential and focus on each person’s contribution.

“WIN inspires leaders to run companies and initiatives with noble values and to fully live their own lives with beauty and enthusiasm.

“It accelerates change by developing, empowering and connecting leaders to a global, authentic and feminine vision through plenary sessions and workshops.’’

Ohadiugha, however, observed that most women did not prepare themselves adequately for the complexities of the political space.

She said that some women lacked the necessary skills required to excel, while the skills of others were not  sharp enough to match the menfolk.

“This underscores the need to provide Nigerian woman the inspiration, knowledge, practical tools and the network of support she needs to help her succeed.

“No one owes her a duty to be included in government or leadership.

“ It is rather the woman who needs to develop herself with the right skills, attitude and network that will make her attractive and irresistible.

“When that is achieved, no government or organisation can ignore her anymore and everyone would like to hire her and let her lead the way’’.

The HURWORPS managing director, said that the conference, scheduled to hold from Nov. 22 to Nov. 24, would attract no fewer than 500 women from across the country.

Furthermore, she said that the participants would learn and acquire the inspiration, knowledge and practical tool to lead the way for the nation’s economic recovery.

WIN, with its headquarters in Switzerland, is a mission-driven organisation and reference for women working internationally, as well as for companies active in women leadership training, she explained. (NAN)

  • Gov. Wike alleges manhandling by DSS, Police.

    NAN-H-48

    Manhandle

    By Azubuike Okeh

Port Harcourt, Oct. 8, 2016(NAN) Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers has allegedly accused officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police of manhandling him.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, the governor’s Special Assistant on Electronic Media, and made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

The statement said that some security agents had attempted to arrest a Federal High Court judge in Port Harcourt when the governor arrived at the scene.

According to the statement, the security agents rough-handled and injured the governor’s hand when he attempted to intervene in the matter.

“As they dragged the governor around, they insisted that they must be allowed to leave with the judge,’’ the statement said.

Meanwhile the Rivers chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described Wike’s account of the situation as false and deceptive.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone, the APC said the claim of being manhandled was another `bizarre stunt of bravado’ intended to gain cheap popularity.

The party urged the governor to face his issues with the security agents and not hawk insinuations aimed at bringing the APC into it.

“We see all these as a way of trying to convince his collaborators in the judiciary that he will always protect them.

“We believe that Wike’s recklessness before the security agencies is a choice which attracts consequences, he needs to deal with it and avoid dragging the APC into it,’’ it said.(NAN)

  • DSS vows to track missing $2m found in judge’s home

DSS vows to track missing $2m found in judge’s home

    NAN-H-43

    Operation

    By Martins Odeh

Abuja, Oct. 8, 2016 (NAN) The Department of State Service (DSS), on Saturday said it had deployed intelligence to track down missing two million dollars believed to be a proceed of fraud found in a judge’s house.

This is contained in a statement signed by an official of the service, Mr Abdullahi Garba, and made available to newsmen in Abuja.

“In one of the States where the Service’s operations were conducted, credible intelligence revealed that the judge had two million dollars stashed in his house.

“When he was approached for due search to be conducted, he, in concert with the State Governor, mobilised thugs against the service team.

“The team restrained itself in the face of unbridled provocative activities by those brought in by the governor.

“Unfortunately, the judge and governor also engaged the tacit support of a sister security agency’’, Garba said.

He said: “the service surveillance team noticed that upon frustrating the operation, the judge with the active support of the governor craftily moved the money to an unknown location which the service is currently making effort to unravel.’’

Garba, however, said the DSS had in the past days embarked on series of special sting operations involving some judges of the Supreme, Appeal and High Courts.

He said the operations were based on allegations of corruption and other acts of professional misconduct by the suspected judges.

According to him, the service’s action is in line with its core mandate.

“We have been monitoring the expensive and luxurious lifestyle of some of the judges as well as complaints from the concerned public over judgment obtained fraudulently and on the basis of amounts of money paid.

“The judges involved were invited, upon which due diligence was exhibited and their premises searched.

“The searches have uncovered huge raw cash of various denominations, local and foreign currencies, with real estate worth several millions of naira and documents affirming unholy acts by these judges’’, he said.

Garba added that some of the judges had made useful statements while a few declined even with the glaring evidences that were found against them.

“The summaries of the recovered money include N93, 558 million $530,087, £25,970 and €5,680.

“Other foreign currencies were also recovered from just three of the judges.

“This seizure is in addition to other banking documents, including real estate documents’’, the statement said.

According to the statement, preparations are ongoing to arraign the judges in a competent court of jurisdiction in line with the laws of the country.

“The service has never invited Justice Walter Onnoghen of the Supreme Court for investigation, neither is he being investigated.

“The service has tremendous respect for the judiciary and would not do anything to undermine it or its activities.

“The service will also join hands with this noble institution in its fight to rid it of few corrupt judges whose actions are undermining not only the judiciary but the common bond of our national life’’, Garba said.

The statement, however, said the current operation would be sustained till sanity and sanctity were restored to the esteemed third arm of government and public confidence regained.

Garba also urged members of the public to avail the service of any information which could assist in this drive to rid the nation of corrupt practices and tendencies. (NAN)

  • Avoid use of expired tyres, FRSC tells school bus drivers

    NAN-DS-2

    Tyres

    By Gami Tadanyigbe

Kuje (FCT), Oct. 8, 2016 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kuje Unit command, has advised drivers of school buses in the area to avoid the use of expired tires to prevent road crashes.

Mr Igbogbo Solomon the Unit Commander, made the call at a public lecture on “Causes of Road Traffic Crashes and Prevention’’ on Saturday in Abuja.

Solomon said the public lecture was aimed at sensitising school bus drivers on the need to adhere strictly to traffic rules, dangers of expired tires and vehicle maintenance.

He said: “the essence of this lecture is to ensure safety on our roads and ensure that school bus drivers adhere strictly to road traffic rules.’’

“Road traffic crashes are not mere occurrences but largely due to human errors. But these can be reduced through conscious effort by drivers to obey traffic rules.

“All we need to do on our highways is to examine our driving attitude to stay clear of any unhealthy practices and to be promoters of road safety advocacy,’’ he said.

He identified human, mechanical and environmental factors to be the three major causes of vehicular crashes on the high ways.

The unit commander assured the participants that the corps would do its best to achieve zero vehicle crashes in the area.

The Chairman of National Association of Private School Owners, Kuje, Mr Michael Oladeji, said the lecture was required to mould the drivers to become more professionals.

“ If the drivers became professionals the lack of adherence to safety rules will become a thing of the past.

“It is essential for the drivers to always keep to these safety rules as only school children make up their passengers.

“These children have no capacity to caution them when they go wrong, that is why they need to be properly orientated,’’ he said.

Oladeji said: “you can be very educated and intelligent, but you cannot know all the techniques in driving, that is the reason why the corps has to sensitise them on safety rules’’.

The chairman appealed to the Federal Government to establish bank of education to enable private school owners to develop the education sector.

He said the sector had suffered a setback, adding that the deficit was already affecting national development negatively.

According to him, the sector requires proper funding in order to reverse the negative trend.

Mr Peter Musa, on behalf of the drivers, expressed delight on step taken by the FRSC to expose them to good driving practices.

“We have resolved to cooperate with the FRSC to ensure strict adherence to traffic rules’’, he said.

He urged the commission and other stakeholders in transport sector to assist in mounting more road signs at strategic points.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the lecture featured procedures of obtaining driver’s license, validity of number plates and prevention of accidents. (NAN)

  • Umahi threatens to arrest herdsmen for wandering

    NAN-H-40

    By Chukwuemeka Opara

    Cattle

Abakaliki, Oct. 8, 2016 (NAN) Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has threatened to arrest herdsmen in the state who flout his directive of not wandering with their cattle around the state.

Umahi made the threat in Abakaliki on Saturday while inaugurating a committee to check disputes between communities and herdsmen, saying that he had given the last warning on the issue.

He said that the committee had enormous task because of incessant cases of cattle moving around in the state and destroying crops and others agricultural produce.

“Cattle must be in one location and the owners should search for food to feed them because our lands are occupied with agricultural ventures.

“I recently inspected areas we planted flowers and trees in the new city and beheld cattle all over the place.

“I asked my Aide De Camp (ADC) to ascertain if one leaf was eaten by the cattle because I would have ordered the arrest of the people rearing them.

“It will be difficult for us to feed ourselves when cattle move around and likewise to achieve our ‘one man, one hectare policy’,” he said.

The governor said that he was an advocate of Ebonyi people living peacefully with the Fulanis, some of whom had been in the state for over 70 years.

“The issue is not where the herdsmen come from because I will resist the cattle movement even if they are owned by Ebonyi indigenes.

“I will readily offer assistance to the herdsmen to enable them keep the cattle at a place because I will hate to see the cattle eating the rice that I laboured to cultivate.

“I borrowed N2 billion for the rice projects across the state and the Federal Government also invested funds which will break my heart if the cattle eat the produce.

“We can do without cattle but cannot do without food as it is proven that the dung from the cattle destroys the asphalt used to construct roads.

“The moment the dung drops on the road, it burns the asphalt due to its high-acidic nature and this is one of the major reasons for road failures across the country,” he said.

Umahi commended the commissioner of police in the state for her efforts in preventing escalation of the disputes and urged the committee to tour the 13 local government areas to ensure that the directive was obeyed.

Chairman of the committee, Mr Augustine Nwakwagu, thanked the governor for his efforts in ensuring peace between the herdsmen and communities in the state.

“We are lucky not to record serious cases of disputes between these categories of people as the committee’s inauguration is instructive to avert such grave occurrences,” he said.

On her part, the Commissioner of Police, Mrs Peace Ibekwe-Abdallah, thanked the governor for inaugurating the committee and pledged that they would work assiduously in ensuring that his directives were heeded.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the committee consists of heads of security agencies in the state, traditional rulers, local government areas caretaker committee chairmen, and other stakeholders. (NAN)

  • PDP, Labour, UPN seek cancellation of Ogun LG poll

    NAN-H-37
    Cancellation
    By Olawale Jokotoye
Abeokuta, Oct. 8, 2016 (NAN) A factional Chairman of the PDP in Ogun, Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele, and his Labour Party counterpart, Mr Abayomi Arabambi, have called for the cancellation of Saturday’s local government poll.

Ogundele and Arabambi made the call in Abeokuta while reacting to the conduct of the election into the 20 local government councils and the 37 newly created LCDAs in the state.

Ogundele said the cancellation had become necessary because the exercise was characterised by violence and irregularities.

The PDP chieftain alleged that there were many reported cases of ballot box snatching as well as other logistic challenges across the state..

He also claimed that a PDP supporter, identified as Goodluck, who was trying to prevent ballot snatching, was shot in the chest at one of the polling centres at Ilara Remo in Remo North Council Area

The Chairman said that the victim was already receiving treatment at Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Remo Council Area.

Ogundele also alleged that there were reports of sporadic shootings at Orile-Ilugun area in Odeda council area resulting from clashes between rival parties.

He said Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGISIEC) also created additional polling centres, particularly in strongholds of the APC,  without the prior knowledge of opposition parties.

Arabambi, on his part, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  that the party had no confidence in the conduct of the poll.

“ The state electoral agency has de-listed our party and therefore denied us from participating in the poll,’’  the chairman  said.

The Labour Party chairman further  said that the party had already filed a suit against OGISIEC and would follow the case to a logical conclusion.

The 2015 Governorship candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in Ogun, Mr Rotimi Paseda, also expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the poll, describing it as “ a deceit.’’

Paseda, who spoke at his Omu residence in Odogbolu Local Government Council after the voting exercise, said that election materials were not sufficient.

He said they had to travel to Odogbolu to request for more materials.

“We cannot do anything else except to make our voices heard and show our dissatisfaction.

“As far as we in the UPN are concerned, this local government election has not been credible.

“Some of our candidates have been getting video reports to prove the irregularities and that is what we will take to court later.

“If we cannot get judgment in court, we will abide by the rule of law, but there is a public opinion court, and that is where we are going to meet.

“We will ensure that we post  the video recordings all over the social media and as long as they are embarrassed, it is  enough for us,” he said.

  • Amosun describes Ogun poll as historic

    NAN-H-33
    Amosun
By Olawale Jokotoye and Temitope Salami
Abeokuta, Oct.8, 2016 (NAN) Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun has described Saturday’s local government poll in the state as “historic.’’

Amosun made the observation while addressing newsmen after casting his vote at Polling Unit 1 in Ward 4 at Ajura in Owode Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The governor hinged his statement on the ground that since the state’s  creation, Saturday’s poll was the first in which election was being conducted into LCDAs alongside local governments.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGESIEC) on Saturday  conducted election   into the 20 local government councils and the 37 newly created LCDAs in the state.

” I feel great today because we are not just voting  but we are also making history.

“In the history of our state which is about 40 years and half now, this is the first time we are having LCDA elections with local governments elections.

“You will therefore agree with me that we are making history today,” he said.

Amosun also rated the poll  in terms of importance above governorship election, saying, “it is the closest to the people.’’

He expressed satisfaction over the peaceful conduct of the poll at his ward, adding that reports that he got from other parts of the state indicated the same situation.

The governor was full of praises for the security agents who were on ground to maintain law and order.

He also commended the state electoral commission, particularly for the simultaneous accreditation and voting system adopted, which according to him, enhanced the credibility of the poll.

‎The governor, however, argued that it would be difficult to assess the turn-out of people until the poll was over because of the system adopted.

“We cannot judge the turn-out of people based on the people at the polling units per time.

“This is because many people according to reports left  the polling centres immediately they finished voting

“So after the voting, we need to compare the number of registered voters with the number of people that actually voted,” he said.

Amosun gave an  assurance that the exercise would improve development in all the council areas.

There was, however, a low turn in some parts of Ijebu-Ode.

A NAN correspondent, who went round Ijebu-Ode, during the election, reports that inspite of the heavy security presence, most people decided to stay back  home.

Some respondents, who spoke to NAN, cited indifference toward the choice of candidates contesting in the poll as the reason  for the low turnout.

However, those who turned out  gave kudos to OGSIEC for a well conducted electoral exercise without incidence of violence.

NAN reports that the Ogun Deputy Governor, Mrs Yetunde Onanuga, who is an indigene of Ijebu-Ode, was also on ground to vote and monitor the poll  across the town.

Most of the wards and polling units visited started the accreditation and voting exercise between 8.00am and 9.00am while those who started at a later time cited logistics reasons for the delay.

NAN observed that in most polling units visited, an average of between 45 and 100 accredited voters had cast their votes as at 1.00 p.m.

The voting exercise officially began at 8.00am and ended at 3.00pm, with all results to be collated by the Returning Officers at the OGSIEC Collation Centre in Ijebu-Ode Local Government.

The Presiding Officer, Italapo Polling Unit 10 in Ward 6, Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Mrs Olabisi Bello, told NAN that voting had gone according to schedule with voters cooperating.

She said the turn out had been fair and that the exercise was carried out without any case of violence or disruption.

Also, at the Ward 9, Odo-Egbo Polling Unit 1 in Ijebu-Ode Local Government, the Presiding Officer, Adetutu Osunsanya, also said the electoral commission provided adequate logistics to begin the exercise according to schedule.

She, however, complained of a low turn out of voters, saying not more than 50 persons had voted at the unit as at 11.00 a.m.

At the Ijebu-Ode South LCDA, Ward 5, Imepe Polling Unit 4, Mr Peter Olanlokun, the Presiding Officer, said the turn out was fair, with about 100 voters as at 12.00p.m.

He also said the exercise was hitch-free and well coordinated.

In Ward 6, Omoluwabi Polling Unit 5 in Ijebu-Ode South LCDA, Mr Moses Adebamigbe, the presiding officer said the turn out was not good enough.

Mr Segun Adebanjo, who cast his vote in Ward 1, Polling Unit 2, told NAN that he was satisfied with the conduct of the poll and was happy no incident of violence or ballot snatching was recorded.

Mr Tola Banjo, former Ogun State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker, who cast his vote at Ward 9, Polling Unit 9, also gave credence to a successful election by OGSIEC.

“No situation is perfect but with what we have seen, there has been calm and the turn out has been improving as the exercise went on.

“The system where people can do accreditation and vote simultaneously has facilitated the speed of the exercise as people can vote and go home immediately.

“That is why we are not having cluster of people around. Contrary to opinion, generally for me, the turnout has been impressive,” Banjo said.

In Sango-Ota, accreditation and voting .started as early as 8:20 a.m. at many polling units.

At Unit 3,Ward 1,Iganmode road, Ota, the presiding officer, Mrs Funmi Odeyemi, said 475 people were expected to vote in the ward, saying that people turned out gradually.

Also at ward 2,Unit 4, the presiding officer, Mrs Kudirat Lawal, said that 541 people were expected to vote in the ward.

As at 11.00 a.m., however, only 40 had voted in the polling unit.(NAN)
