Nigeria/Niger border trade: ECOWAS to assist Jigawa govt. with $2b

Dutse, April 4, 2017 (NAN) Alhaji Aminu Sidi, the Jigawa Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, said the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would assist the state with two billion dollars to execute various projects in some local government areas bordering Niger Republic.
Sidi, who announced this through the ministry’s spokesman, Malam Zubairu Sulaiman in Dutse on Tuesday, said the gesture was to boost the recently launched Kano-Jigawa-Daura-Zinder (KAJIDAZ) Trade Corridor.
The commissioner added that the fund would be used to construct schools, roads, markets and provide water.
According to him, part of the money would also be used to establish community radio stations.
He listed the benefiting local government areas as Babura, Suletankarkar, Maigatari, Gumel and Kaugama.
Gov. Muhammad Badaru of the state had on Sept. 30, 2016 promised investors that opportunities would be open to them for them to invest in the trade corridor.
Badaru made the promise during the launching and workshop of Trade Corridor by the Nigeria/Niger Joint Commission for Cooperation (NNJC) in Dutse.
The governor also promised to provide all the needed infrastructure to ensure viability of the cross border trade zone between Kano-Jigawa-Katsina and Zinder State in Niger Republic. (NAN)
