Lagos, Oct. 20, 2017 (NAN) A 22-year-old man, Alex Onyedikachi, who allegedly hit a policeman’s leg with his car, was on Friday hauled up before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused, whose occupation and address were not provided, was arraigned before  Magistrate O.J. Awope on a charge of assault.

Alex, who resides at Church Street, Shasha, a Lagos suburb, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Awope said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 8 on Alimosho Road, Agege, Lagos.

He said the accused unlawfully assaulted Sgt. Bassey Ubi by using his car to hit his leg.

“The accused assaulted the complainant by using the front right tyre of his Honda Accord car to hit his left leg while he was performing his lawful duty.”

Ayorinde said the complainant was on a stop-and-search duty when he sighted the accused’s Honda car with four men inside without headlight.

“The complainant sighted the accused at 11. 00p.m. and ordered him to stop but he refused, instead he increased his speed and hit his leg which caused the policeman a serious injury.

“The accused was pursued and apprehended,” he said.

The offence contravened Section 174 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be jailed three years if found guilty according to the punishment prescribed by the section.

The case was adjourned until Nov. 8 for mention. (NAN)
