Man, 24, appears in court for alleged theft

Lagos, Oct. 20, 2017 (NAN) An unemployed man, 24, Chineye John, who allegedly broke into a house and stole property valued N209,000, on Friday, appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

John, who resides at No 5, Oshifila Street, Anifowoshe, Ikeja, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of house-breaking, stealing and breach of peace.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp Eruada Victor, said the accused committed the offences on Sept. 17 at No 3, Oshifila Street, Anifowoshe, Ikeja, Lagos.

Victor said the accused allegedly broke into Mrs Chinyere Ubani’s house and stole a LCD television valued N85,000.

He also stole a palmtop valued N45,000, a phone valued N10,000 and a cash of N69,000; all totaled N209,000.

“John was accosted by Ubani’s neighbor, who saw him with the stolen items coming out from the apartment, and shouted to alert other neighbours and passersby for help.

“The accused was apprehended with the help of the passersby and neighbours,’’ he told the court.

The offences contravened Sections 278, 308, and 165 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sections 278 and 308 stipulate three years imprisonment each for offenders.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The magistrate, Mrs G. O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Oct. 30 for mention. (NAN)
