Lagos, Dec. 22, 2016 (NAN) An 18-year-old unemployed man, Mathew Taiwo, charged with snatching a phone valued at N5,000, was on Thursday in Lagos granted a N5,000 bail.
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, asked Taiwo to provide two sureties as part of the bail condition.
The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Ekogbulu said the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Ekogbulu said the accused should be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons, pending the perfection of his bail condition and adjourned the case to Jan.18 for mention.
The accused, who resides in Oniwaya area of Agege, Lagos, is facing a two-count-charge of conspiracy and stealing.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, said the accused committed the offences on Dec. 18 in Dopemu area of Lagos State.
He said the accused and two other persons still at large, snatched a phone valued at N5, 000 property of one Mrs Ngozi Emeh.
Okuoimose said that the accused attacked the complainant around 5:00am on her way to work and snatched her bag.
“The complainant raised an alarm, and passersby chased and caught the accused, while his partners escaped.
“The bag was later recovered on the street but the cell phone was missing,” he said.
The offences contravene Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders. (NAN)
