Lagos, Jan. 19, 2017 (NAN) The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it had completed the renovation and upgrade of public libraries with top class facilities in 18 secondary schools across the state.

Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh, the Special Adviser on Education to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, said in a statement in Lagos that the libraries had been opened for use in the respective schools.

He said the upgrade of the public libraries in schools across the state’s six education districts was in line with the present administration’s commitment to expand access to knowledge for Lagos residents.

According to the governor’s aide, the libraries were provided with new furniture, books, computer systems, and internet facilities to improve the students’ learning experience.

“Solar-powered inverters have been installed for consistent power,’’ Bank-Olemoh said.

He reiterated the state government’s commitment under Gov. Ambode to ensure that every child was given the opportunity to succeed.

Bank-Olemoh disclosed that the state government was ready to launch the Lagos Digital Library, an online repository of education content, in February 2017.

He said the launch of the digital library, tagged “EducateLagos.com’’, was intended to expand access to knowledge for residents.

The governor’s aide said the library would also make learning fun and contribute to improving examination outcomes for students.

“The online library will be accessible via an internet connection on a range of devices from desktop computers to feature phones.

“The initial content will include over 1,600 video tutorials and 2,000 study aids on core subjects from primary to senior secondary school curriculum.

“Other content will include quality research papers from Lagos State Tertiary institutions covering a wide variety of topics digitised for the platform.

“It will also include vocational training videos, creatively presented history lessons, and online courses on coding,’’ he said.

Bank-Olemoh said that towards the official launch of the project, the public would be allowed to participate in a “Design Our Logo” competition.

He said the competition, to commence Jan. 20, would be social media driven and would provide opportunity for Lagos residents to design a world-class logo for Educatelagos.com site.

“Instructions for participation will be made available on www.facebook.com/OSAELAGOSSTATE/ and also on Twitter @OSAELagos at the time the competition is announced.

“The competition will be a winner takes-all contest.

“The designer with the winning logo will be rewarded with a prize and recognised during unveiling of the logo at the launch of EducateLagos.com,” Bank-Olemoh said. (NAN)
