Belgrade, April 26, 2017 (dpa/NAN) Albania sank deeper into a political crisis after an effort by the European Parliament to mediate between the authorities and opposition failed, a report said on Wednesday.

“The Head of the EU Parliament’s Political Committee, David McAllister has failed to steer the feuding sides toward a compromise ahead of June 18 parliamentary elections in talks Tuesday night in Tirana,’’ it said.

The opposition demanded that a caretaker government of all parties should replace Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama’s cabinet and prepare for fair elections.

The opposition has accused Rama and his ministers of being involved in organised crimes and planning to tailor judicial reforms to their interests.

The opposition, which has been boycotting parliament and blocking traffic in Tirana to back its demands, reportedly rejected the proposal to assume four ministries in a transitional government and to appoint the president of the state election commission.
