Abuja, April 24, 2018 (NAN) Mr Bola Aganaba, the North-Central Zonal Deputy Director of Highways, Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, has cautioned against reckless driving on the highways due to rising accident cases.

Aganaba, who made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja, said the number of crashes recorded on the completed sections of the federal highways were avoidable.

According to him, many of the accidents arise from speed limit violation.

The deputy director expressed worry over the development but said that the Federal Government’s commitment to developing road infrastructure was to enhance economic development and not to increase carnage on the highways.

“My message for road users since the government is committed to spending on infrastructure is to show some level of cooperation since a lot of roads are under construction.

“Our appeal is that they should obey traffic laws, especially, road signs and keep to approved speed limit.

“We discovered that the accidents we see on completed sections of the roads are mainly due to speed.”

Aganaba noted that the Federal Government was committed to ensuring that it fixed signage on completed sections of federal highways.

According to him, that is why the ministry struck an agreement with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to ensure that all road signs are standardized.

“The Federal Government is also ensuring that contracts that do not have provision for signage are included, so in a year or two, everybody will start seeing road signs everywhere.

“So, people should use the road wisely and desist from dumping refuse on the roads because it could block the drainage system and cause damages on the roads.”

He also cautioned members of the public against causing damage to the road through unauthorised cutting across the roads.

“One particular case is where people destroy the road shoulders, cut across the road without permission and they end up causing premature road failures,” he said. (NAN)
