Haruna, the Head of Department, Performing Arts, Niger State Council for Arts and Culture, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Thursday.

He said that the call, if implemented, would go a long way to save the Nigerian culture from becoming extinct.

“Many Nigerians do not know their culture any more because they were not taught by their parents.

“Many of us have adopted the western culture virtually in everything we do; this is absurd.

“Parents should endeavour to take their children home in order to learn their culture.”

He noted that many Nigerian children could mime some Indian songs even though they do not know the
lyrics, whereas they may not be at home with their indigenous cultures.

“It is wrong to adopt other people’s culture holistically to the detriment of one’s culture.

“If we allow our culture to go extinct, that is another form of slavery and servitude.”

“If your children learn in foreign language in school, teach them your local language at home.

“Culture does not end in language; teach them how to cook local delicacies; teach them our
dance styles, local songs and cultural values,” Haruna said.(NAN)
