Mararaba (Nasarawa State), Dec. 15, 2016 (NAN) An Upper Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, on Thursday, granted N50,000 bail to two commercial motorcyclists
charged with theft.

The defendants, Hashimu Lawal and Umar Tukur, who allegedly stole a motorcycle valued at N180,000, pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal breach of trust and stealing.

The judge, Mr Ibrahim Shekarau, admitted the defendants to bail with one surety each in like sum.

He also ordered that the sureties must be landed property owners within the court’s jurisdiction and possess the national identity card.

Shekarau said “if the defendants fail to meet the bail terms before the next adjourned date, they will be remanded in Keffi prison.”

He then adjourned hearing in the case until Dec. 23.

The defendants, both residents of Anguwan Hashimu, Mararaba in Nasarawa State, were reported to the police by Mr Zira John, a businessman.

John, who lives at the same address as the defendants, alleged that the men stole his motorcycle.

He said “I entrusted the motorcycle to the 1st defendant, Hashimu, sometime in June for commercial use with proper terms of agreement

“Contrary to our agreement, on Dec. 5, Hashimu told me that he later entrusted the same motorcycle to Tukur, who claimed that the motorcycle was stolen by unknown persons.”

John added that all efforts to recover the motorcycle from the defendants proved abortive.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offences committed by the defendants contravened sections 209 and 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
