Scavenger docked for allegedly receiving stolen properties

Gwagwalada (FCT), June 7, 2024 (NAN) A 25-year-old scavenger, Suleiman Muhammed, has appeared in a Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, Abuja, for allegedly receiving stolen building materials.

The police charged Muhammed, who lives in Aco estate Abuja, with receiving stolen properties.

The Prosecutor, Abdullahi Tanko told the court that Mr Henry Akanda reported the matter at Iddo police station on June 1.

Tanko said that the complainant reported against his workers Praise Matins and Hope Ibrahim, that sometimes in April they dishonestly stole his iron rods, two vibrators of moulding block machine and iron bending tools.

He said that the workers sold the stolen items valued N863,000 to the defendant at the rate of N35,000, adding that during investigation, he confessed to buying the items from them.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provision of Section 317 of the Penal Code.

Tanko in oral application prayed the court not to grant the defendant bail in liberal terms, adding that cases like these have become so rampant in the area.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Olatunji Oladunmoye, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two reasonable sureties in like sum.

Oladunmoye said that the sureties must reside within the court jurisdiction, adding that one of the sureties must work in a reputable organisation.

He said that the sureties must have verifiable addresses and adjourned the matter until July 4 for hearing. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Security guard docked for alleged negligent conduct

Gwagwalada (FCT), June 7, 2024 (NAN) A security guard, Iliya Yakubu, has appeared in  a Senior Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, for alleged negligent conduct.

The police charged Yakubu, who lives in Gwako 2, Gwagwalada, Abuja, with negligent conduct and theft.

The Prosecution Counsel,  Dabo Yakubu, told the court that the complainant,  Akobi Ikechukwu, of the same address reported the matter at the Police Station on June 5.

Yakubu said that the defendant was attached to the city top table Water Company as security guard to guard the company’s equipment.

He said that the defendant negligently allowed an unknown person to enter the company who stole two motor batteries, two surface pumping machines, some motor parts and electrical wires, estimated to cost N1.5 million.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 196 and 287 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Senior Magistrate, Munir Sani, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500, 000, with two reasonable sureties in like sum.

Sani said that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and one of the sureties must be a well-known person

The magistrate said the surety must produce a statement of account with a bond of the same amount.

He said that the other surety must provide a National Identity Card or driver’s license.

Sani said in default the defendant should be remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre.

Scavenger

Okitipupa (Ondo State) June 7, 2024 (NAN) A 32-year-old scavenger, Ridwan Olasupo on Friday, appeared before an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ondo, for allegedly stealing items worth N700,000.

The defendant whose address was not given, is facing a three-count charge of felony, burglary and stealing.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp Ayodeji Omoyeigha told the court that the defendant and another now at large, committed the offence at about 7.00p.m on Jan. 29, at Ikoya Road, Okitipupa.

Omoyeigha said that the defendant, burgled a welding shop belonging to the complainant, Samuel Sunday and stole items worth N700,000.

He said that Olasupo stole a welding machine valued N350,000, a cracker machine valued N200,000, and a 6kg gas cylinder valued N48,000.

He said that the defendant also stole a wheel barrow valued N150,000 and a tank valued N52,000.

The Prosecutor said that the offences  contravened Sections 411, 412 and 390 (9), Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Philip Akinlosetu granted Olasupo bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He said that the sureties must reside within the court jurisdiction, and should present evidence of two years tax payment to the state government.

Labourer jailed 2 years for stealing motorcycle

Abuja, June 7, 2024 (NAN) A Zuba Magistrates’ Court in Abuja, sentenced a 27-year-old labourer, Bashir Sule to two years imprisonment for stealing a motorcycle.

Sule who resides in Area 1, Zuba, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a charge of theft levelled against him

The convict after his guilty plea begged the court for leniency.

The Magistrate, Abdulazeez Mohammed sentenced the convict without an option fine.

Mohammed also advised Sule to be of good behaviour and shun a life of crime after serving his jail term.

He said the punishment would have been stiffer if the convict had not saved the court the rigour of protracted prosecution.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Chinedu Ogada told the court that the complainant, Mr Salisu Wada of Tungamaji Abuja, reported the matter at the Zuba Police Station on Feb. 21

Ogada said that on Feb. 12, the complainant took his Bajaj motorcycle valued N 380,000 to a car wash located  at Tungamaji for washing.

He said the convict criminally and intentionally made away with the said motorcycle, without his consent and sold it for N100,000 to unknown person and converted the money to his personal use.

The prosecutor said during police investigation, the convict made a confessional statement

4 docked for allegedly threatening man’s life

Ibadan, June 7, 2024(NAN) A 41-year-old Damilare Lateef and three others were on Friday docked in an Ona-Ara Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, for allegedly threatening a man’s life.

The defendants, whose addresses were not provided, were charged with conspiracy, threat to life and conduct likely to cause breach of peace, to which they pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp Folarunmi Adeshina told the court that the defendants allegedly committed the offence on May 25, at Aba Eku Dump site, Ona-Ara, Oyo State.

Adeshina alleged that the defendants threatened violence against Olabode Oladeji, the owner of the aforementioned site, with the intent to take over the site.

He alleged that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by harassing, and chasing Oladeji and his workmen away from the site while they were working.

The prosecutor said the defendants, without lawful authority, wanted to take over the site which has already been allocated lawfully to Oladeji by the Oyo State government.

He said the offences contravened Sections 516 and 249(d) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The Magistrate, Mr Ayorinde Ayo-Alagbe granted the defendants bail in the sum of N300, 000 each and two sureties each in like sum

Businessmen jailed 3 for trafficking 7.50 kg of drugs

Lagos, June 7, 2024 (NAN) A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a 28-year-old businessman, Peter Ugwu, to  three years imprisonment for trafficking 7.50 kg of drugs.

The convict was re-arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on an amended nine-count charge of drug trafficking.

He was first arraigned on Dec. 5, 2023, and had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The defendant, however, subsequently opted to change his plea to guilty and he was re-arraigned on Jan. 19.

He was again re-arraigned on June 6, following amendment of the charge by the prosecution, and he again, pleaded guilty to the charge.

Following his plea, the prosecutor Mrs Juliana Iroabuchi, reviewed the facts of the case through a witness, Angela Mba, and tendered 18 exhibits in support of prosecution’s case.

She, then urged the court to proceed and convict the defendant based on his plea and the evidences tendered by the prosecution.

In his verdict, Justice Ambrose Allagoa found the defendant guilty of the offence, and convicted him as charged .

After a plea for leniency on behalf of the convict by his counsel, Mr Dennis Wari, the court sentenced the convict to a term of three years imprisonment on each of the counts.

The court held that the terms shall run concurrently.

The court also ordered a destruction of the narcotics recovered from the convict, by the NDLEA

According to the charge, the convict, a resident of Muscat Oman, committed the offence on Sept. 12, 2023, alongside one Ifeanyi who is at large.

He was apprehended at the departure hall, terminal II of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, during the outward clearance of passengers onboard a Qatar Airline flight to Doha.

He was said to have exported 7.50 kg of hemp, which he concealed in a black nylon bag covered with crayfish and bittterleaf.

The convict was also said to have withdrawn the sum of over N306,000 from his Access bank account, through a POS, while still in detention.

He was said to have done so, to avoid forefeiting same to the federal government.

The offence contravenes the provisions of section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Law of the Federative 2004.

It also contravenes the provisions of section 18(a)(b) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2022. (NAN)

2 labourers jailed 1 year each for stealing building materials

Gwagwalada (FCT), June 7, 2024 (NAN) A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, FCT  on Friday,  sentenced two labourers, Praise Matins and Hope Ibrahim to one year imprisonment each for stealing building materials.

The convicts, who were convicted and sentenced for criminal conspiracy and theft by servant, begged the court for leniency.

Senior Magistrate, Munir Sani, sentenced the convicts to one year imprisonment each or a fine of N100,000 each for each offence.

Sani ordered the convicts to pay N863,000 in damages to the nominal complainant.

Earlier, the Prosecution counsel, Abdullahi Tanko told the court that the complainant, Mr Henry Akanda, of Jabi Abuja, reported the matter at Iddo police station on June 1.

Tanko said that the convicts were workers in the complainant’s site situated at Videsh estate Aco Abuja, where they dishonestly stole his iron rods.

He said that the convicts also stole two vibrator of moulding block machine and iron bending tools all valued at N863,000.

He said that during police investigation they confessed to the offence and mentioned the name of the receiver.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Trader jailed 1 month for stealing clothes worth N32,000

Jos, June 7, 2024 ( NAN) A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Friday, sentenced a 19-year-old trader, Aliyu Ibrahim to one  month imprisonment for stealing clothes worth N32, 000..

Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos, summarily tried and sentenced the defendant after he pleaded guilty to theft.

The magistrate, however, gave the convict an option to pay N10, 000.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ijuptil Thawal told the court that the case was reported on May 4, at the Railway Police station Jos by one Garba Mohammed, the complaint.

The prosecutor said the convict trespassed into the railway quarter and stole seven pieces of clothing before he was caught.

The offence, according to him, is punishable under the Plateau  Penal Code Law. (NAN)

Security guard jailed 4 years for domestic violence

Gwagwalada (FCT), June 7, 2024 (NAN) A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, has sentenced a 39-year-old security guard, Thiouma Kwawi to four years imprisonment for beating up his wife with cable wire and inflicting grievous injuries on her.

Kwawi, who was convicted and sentenced for criminal force and assault and causing grievous hurt, had begged the court for mercy.

Senior Magistrate, Munir Sani, sentenced Kwawi to two years imprisonment for the first charge or an option to pay a fine of N200,000.

Sani, also sentenced the convict to two years imprisonment for the second charge without an option of fine.

He ordered the convict to pay a compensation of N200,000 to the wife being money she spent for her medical treatment.

He also, ordered that the convict be sent to Suleja Correctional Centre and should be punished with hard labour.

Earlier, the Prosecuting counsel, Dabo Yakubu told the court that the convict’s wife, 19-year-old Kauna Jedi, of mopol barrack Kuje Junction, Abuja, reported the matter at Iddo police station on June 1.

Yakubu said that the convict used stone and cable wire to beat his pregnant wife and in the process inflicted serious injuries on her.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Sections 267 and 247 of the Penal Code.

According to Section 247, Whoever, except in the case provided for by section 245 of the Penal Code, voluntarily causes grievous hurt, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years and shall also be liable to fine. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Jos, June 7, 2024 (NAN) A Plateau Magistrates’ Court sitting in Jos, on Friday, sentenced a 20-year old farmer, Mustapha Hamid to one month imprisonment for stealing a cell phone.

The Magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, in a summary trial, sentenced the defendant after he pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing.

The magistrate, however, gave the convict an option of fine of N10,000.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported at the Larato Police Station, Jos by some market leaders on May 6.

Gokwat said that the convict stole the phone from a shop in the market before he was caught.
