  • NUC accredits 43 programmes at Federal University, Kashere

    Gombe, June 14, 2024 (NAN) The National Universities Commission (NUC) has fully accredited 43 academic programmes at the Federal University Kashere (FUK) in Gombe State.

    The commission granted the approval for all the programmes presented by the institution for the  October/November, 2023 accreditation exercise.

    This is contained in a statement by its spokesperson, Mrs Janet Ezekiel in Gombe on Friday.

    Ezekiel said the approval is contained in letter with reference number NUC/ES/412/VOL.14/327 addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Umaru Pate.

    “The document captioned: Result of the October/November 2023 Accreditation of Academic Programmes in Nigerian Universities indicated that in line with the provision of section 10 (1) of the Education (National Minimum Standard and Establishment of Institutions) Act CAP E3, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

    “The commission has organized the accreditation of academic programmes at Federal University Kashere in October/November, and accredit all the 43 academic programmes that were presented in either Accredited, Full or Interim Accreditation Status,” she said.

    Ezekiel said the exercise covered undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for initial accreditation and re-accreditation.

    She said that four postgraduate and 3w undergraduate programmes earned full accreditation, while 7 other undergraduate programmes had interim accreditation.

    “It is important to note that by implication any postgraduate programme with accredited status and undergraduate programme with full accreditation will remain valid for five years after which it will be presented for re-accreditation whereas, those with interim accreditation status will last for two years before re-accreditation,” she said.

    According to Ezekiel, 98 academic programmes being run by the university got full accreditation including 49 postgraduate and 42 undergraduate while seven undergraduate programmes got interim accreditation status.

    The statement quoted Pate as expressing joy over the successful outcome, describing it as “a collective achievement”.

    While reiterating commitment to consolidate on the achievement, Pate sought for the support of the staff to transform the university into a “real citadel of learning”. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Umuahia June 14, 2024(NAN) Rhema University Nigeria, Aba, has received full accreditation for all courses offered by the university, including Medicine and Surgery.
    This is contained in a statement Issued on Friday, by the university’s Public Relation Officer, Mr Earl Okezie.
    Okezie stated that the development was sequel to October/November 2023 accreditation visits by the National Universities Commission(NUC).
    He said that the accreditation was contained a letter by NUC and signed by the Acting Director of Accreditation on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Abraham Chundusu.
    He listed the courses offered full accreditation to include Accounting, Banking and Finance, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Human Anatomy, Mass Communication, Medicine and Surgery, Biochemistry and Chemistry.
    Okezie recalled that the Commission had earlier offered full accreditation to the university’s Nursing Science Department.
    He explained that it came in the heels of the accreditation received from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, as well as the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for Medicine and Surgery.
    According to him, “we had equally received accreditation from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria for our Medical Laboratory Science programme.
    The statement quoted the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ogbonnaya Onwudike, as saying that the cheery news would further boost the university’s continual quest to equip humanity for excellence.
    Okezie stated that the university opened its gates for admissions 14 years ago, when it received the Federal Government’s license to operate as one of the private universities in Nigeria.(NAN)(www.nanews.ng)

    Katsina, June 14, 2024 (NAN) The Katsina State Government has inaugurated community school transition monitors’ committees to ensure the transition of students from primary to secondary schools.

    The transition is from primary to Junior Secondary School (JSS), from JSS to Senior Secondary level (SSS).

    Speaking at the inauguration in Kankara, Hajiya Hadiza Aminu, one of the facilitators said the terms and references of the committee include to identify barriers hindering smooth transition from one level of education to another level and develop strategies to minimise and to eradicate the barriers.

    The two-day exercise which held on in Kankara, Baure and Kafur local government areas was supported by UNICEF’s Kano field office, through its REACH project.

    Other terms of reference, she said, include to conduct sensitisation campaigns to create awareness on the need for continuous schooling for students, especially girls. Constant monitoring and mentoring of the students within and outside the school.

    Others are to conduct a headcount of students every term, keep  proper records and to develop action plan for monitoring and mentoring of the students.

    The facilitator said every child has a right to education.

    ”There is a law that provides jail term for parents who deny their children access to education,” he said.

    She also said that as part of efforts to provide children with quality education in rural areas, about 50 communities were provided with access to a radio learning hub.

    According to her, it is a programme to provide children with access to quality education, especially for Internally Displaced People (IDPs).

    Also speaking, Hajiya Hadiza Ahmed, another facilitator, appealed to stakeholders to sensitise communities on the importance of education, especially among female children.

    She called on the SBMC leaders, mothers association, religious, community and traditional leaders to do the needful towards promoting education in their areas.

    NAN reports that stakeholders at the event mostly attributed the low enrollment in school to poverty and insecurity among other factors.

    Alhaji Haruna Mani, a representative of Jama’atul Izalatil Bidi’a Wa’iqamatu Sunna (JIBWIS), called on government to return the school feeding.

    This, he said, will lead to improved number of enrollment.

    According to him, they are doing everything possible during gatherings to enlighten the public on the importance of education. (NAN)

    Lokoja, June 13, 2024 (NAN) The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu has donated 50,000 notebooks to pupils in public primary schools in Kogi State, under her “Renewed Hope Initiative” project.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the inauguration of the notebooks was done on Thursday at the Government House, Lokoja  by the wife of Kogi Governor, Hajia Sefinat Ododo.

    Speaking in her capacity after unveiling the notebooks,  Hajia Ododo appreciated the President’s wife for her commitment to educational development and empowerment of children in public schools across the country.

    She commended Mrs Tinubu for her visionary leadership and passion to ensuring quality education for all, stressing that the initiative remained an inspiration worthy of emulation.

    The Kogi governor’s wife promised to continue to emulate and support the Nigeria’s first lady for a better output, noting that the notebooks were being distributed across the 36 States of the federation.

    Mrs Ododo urged the people of Kogi to continue to support her husband to take Kogi to greater heights.

    She reaffirmed the governor’s commitment to continue to bridging the gaps in ensuring quality education in the state.

    She advised the pupils to take their studies seriously, while urging  stakeholders to ensure equitable distribution of the notebooks across public primary schools in the state.

    Also speaking, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Mr Wemi Jones, commended the wife of the President for the gesture towards the development of education in Kogi State.

    Jones emphasised that education palliative remained the most sustainable assistance to the people, stressing that Gov. Ododo’s administration would not compromise the educational needs of Kogi children.

    Jones stressed that the former Governor, Alh Yahaya Bello, handed over to Ododo who had been trained and groomed to take education to another higher level in Kogi.

    The commissioner assured that the necessary structure had been put in place to ensure that the notebooks get to the targeted beneficiaries.

    Jones reaffirmed the commitment of Ododo’s administration to ensure that education remained free at basic and secondary levels in public schools across the state.

    “Education is free in Kogi. We are paying for all exams; both internal and external examinations at basic and secondary school levels in the state.

    “As a ministry, we are irreversibly committed to taking education to higher level in Kogi because we have a governor that is fully ready and committed to education development,” Jones said.

    NAN reports the highlight of the occasion was the unveiling of the notebooks for distribution by Hajia Ododo.

    She subsequently handed them over to the commissioner for education for onward distribution to pupils across the state. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Awka, June 24, 2024  (NAN) A lecturer at Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze, Dr Churchill Okonkwo, has urged lecturers to invest in academic research in order to meeting the teaching needs of the 21st century.

    Okonkwo, a lecturer, in the department of physics at the institution, is the Vice-President, College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU).

    Okonkwo said this on Wednesday in Awka during a two-day international training for guidance counselors on ecological approach to social-emotional learning.

    It had as its theme: “Envisioning an Ecological Classroom to Enhance Knowledge in Social- Emotional Learning.

    It was jointly organised by US-based NGO, Life Care Coalition Outreach (LCCO), Igwe Davison Okafor/ Mercy Ikeanyi (IDOMI) and Anambra State Ministry of Education.

    Okonkwo said scientific research would help teachers to improve in their teaching and learning in a changing world for impactful development.

    He said teachers should also avail themselves of new teaching tools and technologies to effectively engage in knowledge transfer in a digital age.

    He urged them to invest on research to gather more knowledge of new technologies and methods of teaching so as to be fit in transferring same to students as the world evolve.

    Also speaking, the Coordinator, IDOMI, Dr Chinedu Ikeanyi, said the workshop was part of their contribution towards improving the standard of education in the state.

    He said the organisation was conscious of the role of quality education in the development of any society.

    According to him, the training was in response to calls by the present and previous administrations in the state for the repatriation of knowledge by those in the diaspora.

    Ikeanyi said with the right teaching and learning environment students would learn and impact positively on society.

    Ikeanyi assured that the programme would be sustained in the same way the organisation had sustained its free medical and scholarship programmes.

    He, however, said it would be evaluated to know areas of improvement.

    The LCCO Coordinator, Mrs Victoria Anago, explained that the programme would also empower counselors to act as social workers in schools while improving the education system.

    Anago said it would expose the teachers to ways of improving their teaching skills  and enhance their competence.

    Dr Sevaughn Banks, a professor of social Work, California state University, Stanislaus, Thurrock,California, argued that classroom ecology could addressing students learning and educational needs while customising the school resources.

    Classroom ecology is the study of how students and their teachers interact both with the classroom environment and with each other within that specific space.

    One of the participants, Mrs Loretta Uzuagu from Aguata educational zone, said she would share the knowledge gained with her colleagues in the zone.

    Mrs Chinwe Chukwuemeka from Otuocha zone commended the organisers for the training said it had improved her communication skills.

    Fofure (Adamawa) June 12, 2024 (NAN) Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) with support from United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has trained  194 parents and teachers on Positive Parenting for effective early childhood development to mark World International Day of Play (IDP).

    Mr Joel Jutum, UNICEF education consultant in Adamawa, who spoke at the training in Fufure Local Government Area of the state, said the day was the first of its kind all over the world.

    He said that  the training was  taking place simultaneously in Guyuk and Hong LGAs   targeting  children of between the ages of three and 12.

    “United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating June 11 as the first-ever International Day of Play.

    “The resolution recognises the importance of play in promoting education, development, and the well-being of children around the world, ” he said.

    According to him, play is very important and fundamental to children’s development as it creates powerful learning opportunities such as  intellectual, social, emotional and physical development.

    Jutum urged parents, guardians and teachers to make celebration of the day a culture for the good of the society.

    Mrs Rabiyatu Idris, facilitator said, the introduction of the day would help improve relationships between children and their parents.

    She advised parents to keep practicing idea of playing with their children and to step down the training to their neighbors.

    Muhammed Jijiwa, community leader commended UNICEF for the training  and for the  contributions for educational development of the state.

    “This will foster unity between children and their parents, improve security consciousness in them, help to reduce the rate of crime and other vices in the community”, he said.

    Kano, June 12, 2024 (NAN) The National Universities Commission (NUC) has accredited 20 programmes of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano State.

    This is contained in a statement issued by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Musa Tukur Yakasai on Wednesday.

    He said that the commission had evaluated 24 programmes out of which 20 were granted full accreditation status.

    The remaining four programmes were given interim accreditation status, indicating that they require improvement in certain areas.

    Yakasai said in the statement that the accreditation process assessed the quality and standards of educational offerings by the Dangote varsity across various disciplines.

    The programmes that received full accreditation after the NUC assessment, he said, are: Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Forestry and Wildlife Management, Architecture, Information and Communication Technology and Automobile Technology Education.

    Also credited are: Building Technology Education, Computer Science Education, Education Mathematics and Metalwork Technology Education.

    Other accredited programmes are Woodwork Technology Education, Automotive Engineering, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, Quantity Survey, Biochemistry, Science Laboratory Technology, Geography and Meteorology.

    “This accomplishment reflects our unwavering commitment to providing high-quality education and maintaining academic excellence.

    “The pogrammes with full accreditation have met and exceeded the NUC’s stringent standards, ensuring robust academic curricula, competent faculty, adequate facilities, and significant research outputs.

    “The university administration is dedicated to continuous improvement and enhancement of our academic programmes,” Yakasai said.

    The VC said the university would promptly address the areas requiring improvement to achieve full accreditation shortly for the other four programmes.

    “We are implementing strategic measures to upgrade the resources and infrastructure necessary for the programmes with interim status, ensuring they meet the high standards set by the NUC,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Okitipupa (Ondo State) June 12, 2024 (NAN) The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given full accreditation status to 14 programmes at the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Ondo State.

    Prof. Temi Ologunorisa, the Vice-Chancellor of OAUSTECH, told journalists on Wednesday in Okitipupa.

    Ologunorisa said that the accreditation was contained in a letter dated June 6, and signed by Engr Abraham Chundusu, the acting Director of Accreditation on behalf of the Executive Secretary of NUC.

    He said that NUC conducted accreditation of academic programmes at the institution between October and November 2023.

    According to him, the result of exercise indicates full accreditation for all the 14 programmes on offer in the university.

    “Although, the institution’s programmes had got interim accreditation in the previous exercise conducted before my administration which begin on March, 23, 2022,” Ologunorisa said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programmes with full accreditation include; Agriculture, Fisheries, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, and Food Science Technology.

    Others are; Mechanical Engineering. Botany, Geophysics, Industrial Chemistry, Mathematics, Microbiology, Statistics and Zoology.

    Prof. Akinbo Adesomoju, the Chairman of Governing Council of the institution, however commended the management for the achievement. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Lagos, June 12, 2024 (NAN) Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education,  Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, says school is not just about teaching and learning in classrooms, but also about positively impacting humanity.
    Alli-Balogun made the remark at the opening  of a two- day capacity building seminar in Lagos,  according to a statement by Mr Bakare Fatai, Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Examinations Board, on Wednesday.
    The seminar was organised by the Lagos State Examinations Board for tutors, heads of schools and other education stakeholders.
    It was aimed to sensitise participants about the conduct of school-based and non-school based examinations.
    “School is not for teaching and learning in the classroom alone, but also for moulding the totality of the lives of students for a better tomorrow,” he said.
    The commissioner emphasised the need to observe an additional hour in school.
    He said that the extra hour to the normal closing time was meant for reading and extra curricular activities by students.
    He urged teachers to take cognizance of the three domains of education  –  cognitive,  affective and psychomotor.
    “These are a variety of methods in professional development aimed at promoting mindsets and behaviours that enhance the learning process and create a culture of career and readiness for every student.
    “The importance of having a mutual and friendly relationship between teachers and students cannot be overemphasized, because such a relationship gives  students a sense of belonging,” Alli-Balogun said.
    The commissioner charged teachers to improve their attitudes and be friendly with members of their immediate communities.

    Ilorin, June 11, 2024 (NAN) Kwara Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has appointed Prof. Jimoh Shaykh-Lukman as the Vice Chancellor, Kwara State University.

    A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, said on Tuesday in Ilorin that the appointment followed a screening exercise by the university’s governing council where Shaykh-Lukman distinguished himself.

    ”He comes highly recommended to the job with decades of experience as an administrator and university scholar,” Ajakaye said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Shaykh-Lukman is currently the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University following the death of his predecessor, Prof. Mustapha Akanbi in 2022.

    He was Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University between 2020 and 2022 and hails from Igbaja in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

    Meanwhile, the governor has approved the transmuting of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin to a State University of Education “for ease of take off and other logistic advantage,” he said,

     

    “The government will continue ongoing efforts to transform the two other colleges of education and make them more viable in line with current realities in the sector,” Ajakaye said.
