    Makinde appoints Kalilu substantive VC, LAUTECH

    Ibadan, June 4, 2024 (NAN) Gov Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the appointment of Prof. Razaq Kalilu as the substantive Vice Chancellor, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso.

    This is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Ibadan by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Salihu Adelabu.

    Kalilu, according to the statement, will serve for a single term of five years with effect from June 12.

    Makinde is quoted as saying that his government looked forward to Kalilu’s hard work, diligence and professionalism in realising the administration’s mission for the institution.

    “Prof Kalilu, a well established figure in the world of art and art history, joined the service of LAUTECH on Sept 1, 1992.

    “He was pronounced a Professor of Arts and History, Department of Fine and Applied Arts,
    Faculty of Environmental Sciences on Oct 1, 1999.

    “Kalilu, an alumnus of the prestigious University of Ife, Ile-Ife, Osun State and the University of Ibadan, Ibadan Oyo State, is a specialist in Form and Material

    “He is a member of several academic and intellectual organisations, such as the Australian Ceramic Society; the International Association of Astronomical Artists and a Fellow of the Society of Nigerian Artists,” the statement read in part.(NAN) www.nannews.ng

  • Group implements early child learning programme to support education

    Aba (Abia) June 4, 2024 (NAN) The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) has commenced the implementation of Early Child Learning Advancement Programme (E-CLAP) in support of primary education in Abia.

    The Coordinator of the group for the South-East, Mrs Eunice Egbuna, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Aba on Tuesday.

    She said that the programme was sponsored by Sterling Bank, through its Education Support outlet, Sterling One Foundation, which engaged CSACEFA to implement the programme in Abia.

    Egbuna said that the programme, designed to last for eight months, would commence at Umuola Central School, Aba.

    She said that the programme would focus on the education of children in their first three years in the primary school (Basic 1-3) with emphasis on the use of mother tongue in educating them.

    “This is with the belief that mother tongue helps to impact lasting knowledge on the children and help them to learn faster.

    “In addition, it focuses on employment of new techniques, well-tailored technology, application of non-formal education curriculum and innovative resource materials in the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy.

    “The programme also promotes safe space application in the teaching and learning environments as well as recourse to the rights of the learner,” Egbuna said.

    She said that the programme would be more beneficial to children in the rural areas and conflict-prone environments, who always lag behind academically for the lack of exposure and concentration.

    “Because of that, their first three years in the primary school is punctuated by a lot of struggles to adjust to new environment, which often lead to the lack of concentration and difficulty in learning.

    “This programme, therefore, aims at injecting the use of technologies, such as audio-visual materials, non-formal education curriculum and other innovations.

    According to her, the programme also aims at the injection of resource materials to sustain their interest and improve their learning ability in literacy and numeracy,” Egbuna said.

    She opined that by the end of the whole exercise, a good number of beneficiaries would have been impacted on to the level of being able to show mastery of reading and writing.

    “They will all do better in calculation within their scope in basic four to six, and to achieve all these, teachers of the early grade pupils will be trained to adapt to this new trend.

    “They will be monitored after the training to access how well or otherwise they are doing in the application of the learning, as the pupils’ learning outcome will also be monitored,” she said.

    Egbuna said that Umuola Central School, Aba, had been chosen as the pilot school and that the outcome of the project would determine its extension to other schools in Abia.

    She urged parents to support their children in learning the new learning technology and the juxtaposition of formal and non-formal curriculum in the school.

    This, she said, would help the children to develop interest in skills of their choice.

    NAN reports that an interactive session was also organised for the parents of the pupils, who commended the organisers and sponsors of the programme.

    Port Harcourt, June 3, 2024 (NAN) The Commissioner for Education in  Rivers, Dr Ovy Chukwuma, has given an assurance that the ongoing nationwide strike will not disrupt the West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE).

    Chukwuma gave the assurance in a statement issued in Port Harcourt and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

    He stated that the examination would proceed in the state, notwithstanding the notice of an indefinite strike by the organised labour to press home its demand for a new minimum wage.

    “While the ministry understands the concerns of the NLC and TUC, we also acknowledge the ongoing WASCE across the West African countries.

    “Disrupting the process in the state would affect the future and result of our candidates; hence, WAEC has resolved to go on with the examination.

    “Therefore, all school principals and supervisors are enjoined to continue with the conduct of the exam, while candidates are advised to continue their exams notwithstanding the strike,” Chukwuma added. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • VC tasks alumni on LASU’s development

    Lagos, June 3, 2024 (NAN) Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), has appealed to the university’s alumni to participate actively in the institution’s development for a monumental growth.

    Olatunji-Bello made the appeal on Monday at the Coconut Breaking  Festival of the university’s alumni association.

    The event was part of activities marking LASU’s 27th Convocation Ceremonies. 

    The vice-chancellor implored the alumni association to use its goodwill to attract construction of an independent power plant and large lecture halls to further develop LASU.

    “All these needs, among other things, will facilitate attainment of the strategic goals of the university.

    “LASU is willing to partner with you and other stakeholders to fast-track the realisation  its vision of becoming the best university in West Africa within the next two years.

    “It is attainable because we are on the path. We need more visible support of all our alumni and stakeholders.

    “Many landmark projects have been commissioned since my assumption of office to bridge the gap between   gown (through alumni  members) and town,” Olatunji-Bello said.

    She said that the festival promoted mutual understanding, cooperation and a sense of oneness in the university.  

    “This is why this symbolic activity should be celebrated by all members of our university community.

    “It also showcases the rich cultural heritage that is peculiar to LASU, Lagos State, and promotes unity, peace  and development of the  university,” Olatunji-Bello said.

    Retired Maj.-Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe, President, Lagos State University Alumni Association, congratulated the university’s management for graduating another set of students. 

    According to Esekhaigbe, the festival is a yearly tradition of the association which symbolises breaking of barriers and revealing of new potential into the institution.

    Lagos, June 2,2024(NAN) The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) has urged Nigeria union bodies against strike action but resorts for peaceful resolution with the Federal Government.

    The National President of the Association, Mr Yomi Otubela made this plea in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Lagos.

    Otubela said that the association identified with the struggles of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to improve the living conditions of workers in affiliated organisations.

    “It is important that we prioritise the well-being of our nation and work towards a peaceful resolution that benefits the workers, the economy, and the overall social fabric of Nigeria.

    “Rather than resorting to industrial action, we encourage both the federal government and the unions to further engage in constructive dialogue, negotiation, and mediation to find a mutually acceptable solution.

    “NAPPS is willing to offer its support and expertise in facilitating the negotiation process to ensure a fair and sustainable resolution for all parties involved,” he said.

    Otubela added that their members were enjoined not to participate in the indefinite strike by NLC/TUC commencing on June 3.

    “A strike action will disrupt the education sector, affecting both students and teachers.

    “Continued stability in the education system is crucial for the growth and development of our nation.

    “The ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will continue as scheduled by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

    “Students are advised to adhere to the original timetable and ensure timely attendance. Take note that other West African countries that are involved in WASSCE won’t wait for Nigerians,” he said.

    Otubela called on school owners and teachers to facilitate a conducive environment for students and staff during this period.

    Minna, June 2, 2024 (NAN), Gov. Umaru Bago of Niger has approved a 50 per cent reduction of the registration fees of all the students studying in Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna.

    This largesse was part of his efforts to ease the burden on parents following the removal of fuel subsidy.

    The Pro- Chancellor University disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in  Minna on Saturday.

    Yahaya-Kuta explained that the governor said the gesture was aimed at alleviating the compounding financial hardships on parents.

    According to him, the decision would reduce the effect of the current economic hardship on the students and their parents who are suffering from the consequences of the fuel subsidy removal.

    Yahaya-Kuta  further stated that all the students studying regular courses in the institution were to enjoy the total relief of a fifty per cent reduction in the registration fees in the ongoing 2023/2024 academic session.

    While congratulating the students, parents, and the people of Niger on the development, the governor hoped that the beneficiaries and entire people of the state would lend their unflinching support and cooperation to the present administration.

    He said, “Governor Bago implored the beneficiaries of the government’s kind gesture to reciprocate it by being more committed to their studies for the development of the state and humanity at large.” (NAN)(www.nannewsngr.com)

  • 2024 NCEE: NAPTAN commends NECO for sucessful conduct

    Lagos, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) has commended the National Examination Council (NECO) for the successful conduct of the 2024 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE).

    Adeolu Ogunbanjo, Deputy National President of NAPTAN, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), described the exercise as a positive development for the education sector.

     

    NAN reports that in 2023, the Federal Government directed that children under the age of 10 would no longer be allowed to sit for the NECC for admission into Federal Government Colleges (FGCs) and Unity Schools across the country.

     

    Ogunbanjo stated, “I am impressed with the general conduct of this year’s NCEE, particularly because NECO, the organising body, adhered to their commitments, which is highly commendable.

    “Despite the age limit, we still had a high number of candidates here in Lagos, indicating that we can achieve success by supporting the government’s directives.

     

    “Moving forward, I urge parents to continue to cooperate by adhering to the necessary measures put in place by the government to address some irregularities, all for the betterment of our children,” he added.

    Meanwhile, Mr Kenneth Chiedu, a parent whose daughter participated in the examination at Sonmori Comprehensive High School Ifako Ijaiye, told NAN that the conduct was well-organised.

    According to him, NECO officials were present early, confirmed the candidates and the examination started exactly at 9:00 a.m., finishing at 3:00 p.m., while parents were asked to maintain their distance.

    Similarly, another parent, Mr Isaac Oyenegecha, noted that the age ten requirement was strictly observed by NECO officials, as students were checked into the hall with printouts containing their details, including age.

    Oyenegecha said, “The age restriction was rigorously enforced, although none of the candidates were disqualified, indicating that they all met the age 10 requirements during registration.

    “Here in Festac Grammar School, some students complained after the examination that the verbal and quantitative papers were challenging, but Mathematics and English were more manageable.”

    A total of 70,603 candidates nationwide participated in the 2024 NCEE into Federal Unity Colleges, with Lagos having 17,751 pupils. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
