    Katsina, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The Police Command in Katsina State has confirmed the kidnapping of a 75-year-old, Hauwa’u Adamu, mother of the renowned Hausa singer,  “Dauda Kahutu Rarara”.
    A statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Abubakar Aliyu, said the elderly mother was kidnapped at her residence in Kahutu, Danja Local Government Area of the state in the early hours of Friday.
    “Today, June 28, at about 1:30a.m., an information was received at the Danja Divisional Police Headquarters, that some suspected kidnappers silently invaded the residence of one Hauwa’u Adamu, aged 75, in Kahutu village, Danja Local Government and kidnapped her.
    “Upon receipt of the report, promptly, the DPO Danja led a team of operatives to the scene with a view to arresting the culprits and unhurt rescue of the victim,” he said
    However, the kidnappers had already fled with the victim.
    The PPRO further explained that two suspects were arrested during investigation for questioning on the matter.
    Aliyu said that further developments would be communicated in due course as the investigation into the matter was in progress.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Abuja, June 28, 2024(NAN) The President Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensen, has called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration, (FCTA) to find lasting solutions to unregulated taxi operation and indiscriminate parking of commercial vehicles in the territory.
    Dongban-Mensen made the call in Abuja at the opening of the year 2024 Special Marshal National Retreat on Friday in Abuja.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the retreat is “Promoting SafeTransportation Through Public Awareness and Enforcement Strategies.
    The President of Court of appeal decried the attitude of some commercial drivers hindering free flow of traffic.
    She appealed to the FCT administration and other traffic management agencies to step up awareness campaigns and Enforcement to bring sanity on FCT roads.
    “I want to commend FCTA for investing heavily in road rehabilitation and construction.
    “There is need for that strict enforcement of traffic laws would bring sanity to FCT roads,”he said.
    Dongban- Mensen urged both public and private organisations to always engage the services of special Marshals whenever the need arises, especially during social activities.
    Speaking, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr Shehu Mohammed said that the Corps was going to review operations of special Marshals.
    This, he said would be in line with global best practices to enhance traffic management in the country.
    Mohammed emphasised the importance of special Marshals to traffic control due to the increased number of vehicles on Nigerian roads.
    He said that the Corps would continue to appreciate the support of  stakeholders in ensuring effective traffic management in the country.
    Earlier, the National Coordinator of Special Marshals, Dr John Ugbebor, remembered them of their roles in complimenting FRSC in promoting good driving culture to check road accident.
    Ugbebor urged the special Marshals to remain committed to their selfless service and do their best to improve traffic situation in the country.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Stakeholders in the transport sector, traditional rulers, and senior public officials in their separate messages commended the Special Marshals for their contributions towards nation-building.

    NAN reports that Dongban -Mensem is also the founder of  Kwapda Road Safety Demand Foundation (KRSD).

    NAN also reports that during her free time,  Dongban-Mensem controls traffic in the capital, Abuja, eight years after her son was killed in a hit-and-run accident.

    Okarki (Rivers), June 28, 2024 (NAN) Commodore Nanmar Lakan, Commander Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH (NNS) said the command has arrested two persons for crude oil theft and seized a wooden boat laden with 12,000 litres of Automated Gas Oil (AGO).

    Lakan disclosed this while parading the suspects at Okarki waterfront on Friday.

    He said that the suspects were arrested at Okariki waterfront, in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers.

    Lakan explained that the arrest was made in line with the mandate of Operation Delta Sanity, which includes anti-crude oil theft, anti-pipeline vandalism, and anti-illegal refining sites among others.

    “Working with intelligence gathering from the good citizens of this country, we received credible information that some people want to move illegally refined AGO, popularly known as diesel from the Okarki River.

    “We dispatched our men there, and they arrested two suspects.

    “The quantity of the AGO is estimated to be 12,000 litres refined illegally,” he said.

    He urged those involved in illegality to desist from such and look for a better way of livelihood, as such illegal business was harmful to the society, and the nation at large.

    According to him, the nation is losing a lot economically, so I advise them to stop, if not we are determined to rid the entire area of this illegal business.

    He appealed to members of the public and lawful citizens, to give relevant information to security agencies particularly the NNS SOROH to carry out its tasks.

    The commander said that the suspects and the products would be handed over to the appropriate security agency because there was a standing procedure for handling such issues.

    He expressed the commitment of the navy to rid the waterways of criminals and urged those involved in illegal oil bunkering to desist from it or face the wrath of the law.

    Speaking to newsmen, one of the suspects, Mr Clement Fimeya, said that he was doing it to feed his four children because of lack of job opportunities.

    He pleaded for forgiveness and promised never to indulge in such illegality if granted a pardon by the appropriate security agency. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Abuja, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The Chairman, Military Pensions Board (MPB), AVM Paul Irumheson, says the Federal Government has approved an electronic verification system for military pensioners to ensure sanity in pension administration.

    Irumheson stated this while addressing newsmen on the commencement of the electronic verification exercise nationwide on Friday in Abuja.

    He said the initiative was aimed at sanitising military pension administration and elimination of issues of impersonation.

    The chairman said the board adopted an electronic verification system to reduce the risk of traveling from one place to another, and the cost of transportation owing to their old age.

    “You may recall that on Feb. 15, I briefed this honourable press about the board`s intention or plan to move from physical verification to electronic verification for our military retirees.

    “The reasons amongst others include security risk of travelling from one place to the other; old age of some of our pensioners; and high cost of transportation, particularly for those staying abroad,” he said.

    Irumheson said the board successfully conducted a pilot test from Feb. 15 to March 1, adding that only 15 of the 2,000 pensioners verified failed the process.

    He said the little observations noticed had been used to improve on the system.

    According to him, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle, and the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, have approved the commencement of the verification for the esteemed pensioners.

    The chairman assured that the board would carry out sufficient public awareness to enable pensioners to navigate the system with ease.

    He called on military pensioners to take advantage of the electronic verification exercise as those who failed to, would seize to receive their pensions.

    “I hereby declare the Electronic Verification Exercise officially open on full scale for all our retired pensioners for a period of three months from July 1 to Sept. 30.

    “Finally, the Board wishes to advise all pensioners to take active part in this exercise.

    “Those that fail to take part in the verification exercise will not get their pensions going forward,” he said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Lagos, June 27, 2024 (NAN) The Certified Pension Institute of Nigeria (CPIN) has inducted the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Olukayode Egbetokun, as an Honorary Fellow of the institute.

    Egbetokun’s induction took place during the institute’s 2024 Investiture/Induction Ceremony of new Fellows and Associates, which held on Thursday in Lagos.

    The theme for the event was: “20 years of contributory pension scheme in Nigeria: Challenges and the way forward”.

    The I-G, who was represented by the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, commended the institute for the honour, assuring of his commitment to improving the pension welfare of the force.

    Egbetokun promised to contribute his quota to the development of the institute, while leveraging  the fellowship to improve the pension of  police personnel.

    The President and Chairman, Council of CIPN, Alhaji Umaru Kwairanga, said they would continue to improve on  professionalism in order to meet the yearnings of Nigerians,as well as enhance and promote administration of pension in Nigeria.

  • Reps member inaugurates study facility at Abakaliki custodial centre

    Abakaliki, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The Member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Chief Chinedu Ogah, has inaugurated a study facility of the National Open University, at the Abakaliki custodial centre.
    Oga inaugurated the facility on Friday as part of activities to mark his 48th birthday ceremony.
    He said it was to enhance the educational well-being of the inmates and give them hope of a secured future.
    The legislator said the inmates should be encouraged to embrace education while on awaiting trial or serving various sentences.
    “The inmates should access free education from the facility and one of my friends have promised to provide 24 computers at the facility.
    “The facility will be equipped with internet facilities to ensure that the inmates receive quality education.
    “I am also in contact with a United Nations agency and this custodial centre will be part of those to benefit from its intervention,” he said.
    He noted that the centre and the one at Afiikpo would receive infrastructural facelift as captured in the 2024 budget.
    “We are also providing free drugs for the inmates and urge that they should not be sold.
    “Sick inmates should be treated at the centre but those with serious cases should be referred to the Alex-Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
    “We don’t want to further lose any inmate and as the Chairman of the House Committee on Reformatory Institutions, I will ensure you are well provided for,” he said.
    Ogah advised the inmates to behave well in order to be useful to themselves and the society when released.
    “Those that actually committed the offences being charged with, should repent while the innocent ones should know that God kept them at the centre to be saved.
    “Do not threaten custodial centre officials or cause trouble but be reformed with your stay at the centre,” he said.
    A Representative of the Controller of Corrections in Ebonyi, Linus Otah, thanked Ogah for his love for the officials and inmates of the centre and prayed for God’s protection upon him.
    “You have continued bringing good tidings to the centre and we would continue doing our best to take care of the inmates,” he said.

  • Police promise justice as late NURTW  member’s family alleges cover-up

    Lagos, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The police in Lagos have  given assurance that justice will be served in the alleged  killing of a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Obalende Branch, by a policeman.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the auditor of NURTW, Obalende Branch, Toheeb Eniafe, was allegedly shot dead by  a policeman at an NNPC Filling Station at Obalende on May 1.

    He was allegedly killed while attempting to buy fuel.

    Fayoade gave the assurance of fairness and objective in investigation into the case, on Friday.

    He reacted to an allegation,  by the bereaved  family, of a police cover-up.

    According to the CP, the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Panti,  Yaba, is handling the case.

    “All those involved will be prosecuted.

    “The Homicide Department of the State CID is investigating the case. The police cannot cover up the suspects.

    “Everyone involved in the shooting will be brought to book,” the commissioner said.

    The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, had in a statement on May 2, said that the policeman, who allegedly shot the deceased, had been identified.

    He said: “The person behind the shooting has been identified as a policeman serving at Special Protection Unit Base 17, Lion Building, Lagos.

    “Investigation is still ongoing, and further findings will be made available.”

    Eniafe’s family had earlier petitioned the inspector-general of police over alleged delay in concluding  investigation into the case as well as prosecution of suspects.

    The family also addressed a news conference on Thursday alleging police cover-up.

    Mr Muritala Eniafe, the elder brother of the deceased, who spoke on behalf of the family, said that though the police  promised justice,  alleged slow pace of investigation into the case suggested a cover-up.

    According to him, he was invited to the CID and was assured that police were investigating the case.

    The Chairman of  NURTW, Obalende Branch, Mr Wale Giwa,  said at the news conference that the union was in support of the family’s demand for timely justice. (NAN) wwww.nannews.ng

    Awka, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The Anambra Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has arrested four suspects involved in illegal mining activities in the state.

    NSCDC Commandant in the state, Olatunde Maku, parading the suspects on Friday in Awka, said they were arrested on Thursday at Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area.

    According to Maku, the arrest was in collaboration with Federal Mines Officers of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in charge of Anambra.

    He said that the team arrested the following suspects: Nnamani Chidubem, Ekemezie Ifeanyi, Okolie Patrick, and Onyedika Somtoo.

    “These suspects were caught mining Laterite without approval from the relevant authorities, causing environmental degradation in the area.

    “Exhibits recovered from the suspects include a truck-load of Laterite, with registration number LAGOS T- 13038 LA, nine heavy-duty batteries, one heavy duty hydraulic jack and four fuel filters.

    “This arrest is an indication and a strong signal to those illegal miners that it is no longer business as usual,” he added.

    The NSCDC commandant said that illegal mining constituted economic sabotage and posed environmental risks in the state.

    He commended the Solid Minerals Unit for sustaining efforts aimed at stamping out illegal miners in the state.

    Also speaking, Mr Henry Bolarinwa of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development urged miners to operate with valid licenses and in approved mining sites.

    Bolarinwa said that the warning was necessary to block revenue leakages and prevent environmental hazards associated with illegal mining activities. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • C’River: NDLEA secures 19 convictions, seizes 525.6kg of illicit drugs

    Calabar, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The Cross River command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), says it secured no fewer than 19 convictions for drug-related offences between January and June.

    The commander, Rachel Umebuali disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar on Friday.

    She said that a total of 142 persons were arrested for various drug-related  offences across the state within the period under review.

    The NDLEA official further said that 16 persons were currently under prosecution, and that none of the accused persons was discharged during the period.

    Umebuali said that the command seized a total of 525.6kg of different illicit drugs within the past six months.

    She disclosed that illicit drug dealers were constantly devising diverse ways to perfect their trade without being caught

    The commander listed cannabis sativa, methamphetamine, psychotropic drugs, heroin, cocaine and tincture as the most trafficked and abused drugs in the state.

    “These drug peddlers mostly conceal the drugs in bags and convey them to buyers with motor vehicles,” she said.

    Umebuali said that the command’s operations were hugely affected by lack of adequate logistics such as vehicles.

    She however, restated the agency’s commitment to religiously undertake its duty of tackling drug trafficking, addiction and abuse in the state.

    “Whether we like it or not, illicit drug intake has consequences on security, economy, and the overall welfare of the populace.

    “It has an undeniable connection to the rise in insecurity, and impacts negatively on peace and development,” she said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Maiduguri, June 28, 2024 (NAN) Three Boko Haram terrorists have surrendered to troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in the ongoing  ”Operation  Lake Sanity II”. 

    Lt.- Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, MNJTF, Chief Military Public Information Officer, Ndjamena Chad, made this known in a statement released in  Maiduguri.

    ”In Cameroon’s Sector I, two terrorist fighters surrendered to the troops at Wulgo.

    ”They have been identified as Rawagana Mustapha, 18, and Mustapha Ali, 20.

    ”Similarly, Sector III in Nigeria reported the surrender of one terrorist fighter, Ibrahim Malam, 28, to the 403 Amphibious Brigade in Baga.

    ”Preliminary investigations revealed that Malam had been a Boko Haram fighter living in Kwaleram, south of Lake Chad, for six years,” he said.

    “As Operation Lake Sanity II progresses, MNJTF urges other terrorists to surrender and lay down their arms for lasting peace and prosperity in the region,”he said.(NAN)
