Akure, June 2, 2024 (NAN) A middle-aged man, Seidu Jamiu, has been killed by yet-to-be-identified persons in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The man was reportedly hacked to death late on Saturday by unknown persons who allegedly broke into his house in presence of his wife.
SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO), Ondo State Command, while confirming the murder of Jamiu to newsmen on Sunday, said police were yet to identify the killers.
Odunlami-Omisanya explained that the deceased’s wife reported the incident at the police station on Sunday morning that some people killed her husband in the midnight of Saturday.
The PPRO also said that no arrest had been made over the incident.
“I can’t confirm that the victim’s wife killed him because it was the woman, the complainant of the incident, that reported the matter at police station.
“We have not made any arrest, but investigation has begun into the incident,” PPRO said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
NDLEA intercepts over N2.1bn worth of Codeine syrup, Loud consignment

Abuja, June 2, 2024 (NAN) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted large consignments of codeine-based syrup and Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis worth over N2.1 billion in street value.
The NDLEA spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.
Babafemi said that the consignments were seized at Onne port, Rivers and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA) Ikeja by the NDLEA operatives.
According to him, at the Lagos airport, NDLEA officers with the cooperation of other security agencies on Friday May 31, intercepted a large consignment of Loud.
He said that the drugs were in eight suitcases, containing 320 parcels with a total weight of 164.50kg of the strong psychoactive substance.
He added that they were coming from Canada on a KLM flight via Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Babafemi said that the consignment estimated to be worth N960 billion, which was brought in by a passenger, Ughenu Francis, was discovered at the E-arrival hall of the airport by personnel of NDLEA, Customs and others.
“This was during a joint search operation by the security operatives while the suspect was attempting to smuggle the suitcases out of the hall.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a resident of Germany but travelled to Toronto, Canada to transport the drug to Nigeria.
“During his interview, he claimed that he was recruited as a mule to convey the drug to Nigeria for an agreed fee of N6 million,” he said.
Codeine syrup seized by the NDLEA operatives
In another development at the Onne Port in Rivers, NDLEA operatives on Monday May 27 intercepted a container marked TEMU 6807401 imported from India enroute C to C bonded terminal in Enugu.
According to Babafemi, during a joint examination of the container by personnel of NDLEA, Customs and other security agencies, 1,750 cartons of codeine were discovered.
He said the cartons, which collectively weighing 26,250kg, contained 175,000 bottles of the opioid worth N1,225,000,000, in street value.
“Also, in Abuja, a 25-year-old lady, Blessing Thomas, was arrested with 1.0kg methamphetamine by NDLEA operatives on patrol along Kwali – Gwagwalada expressway,” he said.
Babafemi said that the suspect was arrested on Friday May 31 while travelling in a commercial bus from Lagos to Yola, Adamawa state.
Illicit drugs intercepted by the NDLEA operatives
Also, Babafemi said that operatives in Nasarawa state on Wednesday May 29 nabbed a 70-year-old man, Muhammadu Ibrahim, with 57.2kg of marijuana in Lafia, the state capital.
The NDLEA spokesman further said that two suspects: Suleiman Kazeem, 35, and Sunday Gbenga, 20, were arrested when NDLEA officers raided Ara forest in Ara-Ekiti, Ekiti state.
He said that the operatives recovered 426 kilogrammes of marijuana already processed and packed in big sacks.
Babafemi added that the NDLEA operatives also destroyed over 4,000kg of marijuana on 1.66 hectares of farmland on Thursday May 30.
According to him, operatives of the agency also seized 76 blocks of marijuana, weighing 42kg, from a Nigerien, Suleman Audu, 29, in Katisna State.

Kano, June 2, 2024 (NAN) The Police Command in Kano says it foiled an attempt by suspected thugs to invade the residence of Prince Abdullahi Abbas, Chairman of state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A statement by its spokesman, Mr Abdullahi Kiyawa, said on Sunday in Kano that on May 31, at around 6 p.m., a distress call was received from Chiranchi junction in Gwale Local Government Area of the state.
“It was reported that the thugs, armed with dangerous weapons, were pelting people with stones and attempting to enter the APC chairman’s house.
A team led by the Divisional Police Officer, Gwale Division, responded swiftly and foiled the attempted invasion, restoring normalcy to the area.
He said that no arrest was made but investigation had revealed that the incident was a fight between two rival gangs, with the masterminds identified as Abdul’Yassar, Alias Jonny, Birbiri and Jinjiri Aljan.
Kiyawa said that efforts to apprehend the suspects were in progress.
“A round-the-clock patrol has been launched in the area to prevent further disturbances.
“The police are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all citizens in Kano State, and this swift and decisive action is a testament to their commitment to protecting the community,” he said.
He assured the residents that the command was on top of the security situation
‘We have mapped out security measures to enable residents move on with their legitimate activities without threats to lives and property.

Kano, June 2, 2024 ( NAN) Residents of the metropolitan Gwale, Dala, and Municipal Local Government Areas in Kano State have called on the State Police Command to deploy more operatives across the city and its environs to bolster security.
A cross section of the residents expressed their dismay and fear over the growing presence of thugs amidst the ongoing emirship tussle in the state.
They appealed to Gov. Abba Yusuf to establish a plausible comprehensive security network to address the situation, ‘once and for all’.
Alhaji Abubakar Mohammad, a resident of Gwale Local Government Area, shared his personal experience of his wife being robbed by thugs while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.
He appealed to the Commissioner of Police to deploy more security personnel to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Malam Abdulmuni Shehu of Dala Local Government Area and Hajiya Aishatu Abu of Dan Agundi area also called for increased security measures to address the tense security situation in the metropolis.
Dr Sani Zulyadain, a resident of Sagagi area, in Kano Municipal LGA, appealed to the state government to take drastic measures to end the activities of thugs terrorizing the innocent residents.
Malam Ishaku Ibrahim, another resident of Sagagi area, also appealed to Yusuf to intervene in the ongoing attacks by hoodlums.
The residents are calling for increased security measures, including foot patrols and the deployment of plain-clothes operatives, to apprehend the thugs, with a view to restoring peace to the community.
They emphasized that the activities of these criminal-minded youths posed a significant threat to the peace Kano had been enjoying before the onset of the emirship tussle.
Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, assured the residents that the command was on top of the situation, adding,”we mapped out security measures to apprehend those involved.
”I am passionately appealing to all the law-abiding and peace-loving residents to volunteer timely and credible information on the movement of hoodlums.”
Also, the Commissioner for Information, Malam Baba Danteye, stated that the state government and the state security agencies were effectively synergising to bring all those behind the nefarious acts to book.
He said, “The Kano State Government is fully committed to supporting the Police and other state security agencies in their efforts to maintain peace and security in the state.
” We urge all the residents to join forces with us by reporting any suspicious activities or characters to the nearest security office, enabling prompt action to be taken.

Lagos, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, says that it is time urgent measures are taken to halt cultism and drug abuse in the society.
He said this on Saturday at Ikeja, during a event organised by the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) tagged: “Teenagers Stay Informed: Know the Dangers of Cultism and Drugs”
According to Fayoade, cultism and drug abuse have become a big security threat that need to be attended to.
He urged the public to support its drive to totally eradicate the menaces from the society.
“Today, cultism is not only in higher institution, it has taken over every fabric of the society; mechanics, barbers, drivers and others are now members of cults.
“Cultists don’t do anything meaningful but to disturb the peace of the community, fighting, claiming superiority and destroying lives and property.
“The law enforcement agencies, government, family, stakeholders and individuals, must join hands to tame these menaces that have eaten deep into our society,” he said.
According to him, cultism and drug abuse lead to other criminal activities such as armed robbery, murder, rape and other vices.
“When you engage in cult activity and drug abuse, you will be prone to committing other crimes.
“We are losing the precious lives of our youths that would have contributed to the economy and social development of our country, ” he said.
The police boss said that the aftermath of drug abuse was a serious medical condition.
“When you are mentally derailed, you cannot do anything meaningful with your life; your family and the society will also be affected,” he said.
The police boss advocated for good parenting in order for the youth to be properly guided not to stray out of the right way by joining destructive groups such as cults and other criminal groups.
“Parents, pay special attention to your children, teach them to do the right thing and always advise them against peer pressure,” he said.
In the same vein, the National Coordinator of POCACOV, CSP Olabisi Okuwobi, warned students to away from anyone or activity that encouraged the use of drugs, cultism and all other vices capable of derailing their journey in life.
“Reject cultism and drug abuse to face your education so you can become better students with a brighter future,” she said
According to her, one of the consequences of joining a cult is death.
She called for concerted efforts to fight the vices in order to save Nigerian children from destruction.

Police recover gun, ammunition from fleeing robbery suspects in Enugu

Enugu, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The Police Command in Enugu State has recovered a gun and ammunition from fleeing armed robbery suspects in the metropolis.
A statement issued on Saturday in Enugu by the command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said men from the Awkunanaw Police Division recovered the gun on May 29.
Ndukwe said that the operatives responded to a distress call of a robbery in a compound at Awkunanaw, Enugu, at 10.00p.m. and foiled the attack.
According to him, the police team recovered a locally fabricated double barrel gun with two live catridges dropped by one of the fleeing robbers.
The statement further said that detectives from the Awkunanaw Police Division on May 30, at 7:30p.m., also arrested three suspects allegedly connected to theft of iron rails.
“Their arrests led to the recovery of yet-to-be quantified pieces of iron rails vandalised at the pedestrian crossing bridge at Holy Ghost/Ogbete Market, Enugu,” Ndukwe said.
He said that discreet investigation was ongoing to arrest other members of the gang, adding that the suspects would be prosecuted once investigations were concluded.
Ndukwe quoted the Commissioner of Police, Mr Kanayo Uzuegbu, as appreciating residents of the state whose information on activities of criminals made the arrests possible.
Uzuegbu tasked the residents to continue to support the police by promptly reporting suspected criminals and their activities to the police and other security agencies. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
NSCDC apprehends wife of suspected pipeline vandal in Rivers

Abuja, June 1,2024 (NAN) The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested the wife of a suspected pipeline vandal and possession of two fabricated guns in Rivers.
This is contained in a statement by NSCDC Public Relations Officer (PRO), Babawale Afolabi on Saturday in Abuja.
According to the PRO, the corps got an intelligence tip-off concerning some pipeline vandals residing at Idia/Ogburu waterside settlement camp, located around a multinational company in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni; Onelga, Rivers.
He said that the operation by the Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CGs SIS) led to the arrest of the suspect while others including her husband are currently at large.
Afolabi said that the suspect confessed during interrogation that the firearms and incriminating exhibits found in the hut where she was apprehended belonged to her husband who had been in the illegal oil business for two years.
He added that items recovered from the site included; two locally fabricated pistols, one generator, stainless steel saws, thread sealing tapes, spades, shovels.
“Four different welding machines, drilling machines, wellhead valves of different sizes, cables, two functioning smartphones, four non-functional phones, one power bank among other items.
“The suspect and all exhibits have been handed over to the Intelligence Department of the Rivers Command for further investigation and possible prosecution”.
The Spokesman cautioned citizens to desist from any act that could be of economic sabotage to the nation.
‘Culprits would be made to face the wrath of the law hence the public is advised to engage in meaningful businesses and cooperate with the government,” he said.
Afolabi urged Nigerians to provide credible and timely information to security agencies when in doubt or suspicion of security activities within and around their domain.

APC to Gov. Lawal: Employ more strategies to end banditry

Gusau, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The Zamfara chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the state government under Gov. Dauda Lawal to employ more strategies towards ending banditry and other criminal activities in the state.
This is contained in a statement issued in Gusau on Saturday by the state APC Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris.
“The state APC chapter condemned recent attacks on the residence of State Hajj Commission’s Chairman, Alhaji Musa Mallaha in the state capital by bandits.
“The State APC Chairman, Alhaji Tukur Danfulani, on behalf of the party’s State Working Committee, executives and members in the state wishes to condole Mallaha and his family over the recent attack on his residence which led to the death of his son, Abdulmunafi.
“May Allah grant the deceased a home in Aljannatul Firdausi,” Idris said.
According to him, the party is equally touched and appalled by the abduction of other residents in the area during the attack who are currently in the bandits’ captivity.
Idris said, “We pray to Allah to save them and ensure their rescue very soon.
“We once again wish to implore the state government to employ more strategies to bring to an end the activities of bandits and other criminals in our state.
“We also pray for the continued unity, stability, and development of Zamfara and Nigeria in general..”
According to him, the party also wishes to extend its heartfelt condolences to the family of late Alhaji Yusuf Danhausa, an elder statesman who passed away recently in Gusau.
“Danhausa, who died at the stunning age of 126 years, lived a highly impactful life worthy of emulation.

Abuja, May 31, 2024 (NAN) The Comptroller General, Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) Kemi Nandap has said that 107,646 produced passports remained uncollected nationwide.
The Service Public Relations Service (SPRO) Mr Kenneth Udo said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
The CG however, appealed to applicants whose passports have been produced to go for pick-up at the various Passports Issuing Centres across the country.
Nandap lamented that efforts being made at reaching out to the owners had proved abortive.
“Applicants are therefore strongly advised to always provide verifiable addresses and phone numbers when filling their online passport application forms for easy contact, “she said.
The NIS CG directed that all Passport Offices in Lagos should operate on Saturdays between 9am – 2pm.
This, she said would enable officials attend to applicants coming for the collection of their produced passports only.
“Therefore, those concerned are hereby informed to take advantage of this opportunity.

Abuja, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The new Controller of Corrections, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Usman Ibrahim has assumed duty on Friday in Abuja.
Ibrahim took over from John Francis, who was recently redeployed to Kaduna State Zonal Headquarters.
Francis thanked the officers of the command for their support and urged them to extend the same gesture to Ibrahim, whom he believed would take the command to greater heights.
On his part, Ibrahim expressed confidence for a mutual working relationship, towards achieving the mandate of the service in FCT.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ibrahim was enlisted into the service in 1990 and had served in 14 Custodial Centres.
Until his deployment as Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Ibrahim was the Controller of Corrections in charge of Operations at the National Headquarters. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
