Kano anti-graft commission probes alleged empowerment scheme fraud

    Probe

    By Aminu Garko

Kano, June 9, 2024 (NAN) The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission says that it has commenced investigation into the alleged scam that characterised the recent disbursement of empowerment funds to street hawkers by governor Abba Yusuf.

The Commission’s chairman, Muhuyi Rimin-Gado, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Kano that the commission was investing the matter to identify and bring those responsible to justice.

“The commission is investigating the matter and anyone found involved would be brought to justice.

“The commission is determined to prevent corruption from undermining the integrity of the empowerment initiative of the government and ensure that justice is served,” Rimin Gado’’, told NAN.

The probe follows a viral video showing where some officials allegedly coerced beneficiaries into surrendering a significant portion of the N50, 000 grants each of them received during the disbursement ceremony.

NAN reports that Yusuf had recently presented N50,000 each to 465 street hawkers to boost their businesses.

However, in a 60-second video, one of the beneficiaries, Malam Nura Isa, alleged that he was coerced by officials to return N45, 000 from the N50,000 cash given to him.

Isa alleged that he was part of about 100 beneficiaries cornered by officials, who demanded that they must comply “in their own interest.”

It was also gathered that most of those shortlisted to benefit from the scheme were denied access to the venue of the event while their benefits were handed over to impostors. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Nigerian Legion to build mini estate for veterans in Lagos

Nigerian Legion to build mini estate for veterans in Lagos

    Project

    By Oladapo Udom

Lagos, June 9, 2024 (NAN) The Nigerian Legion, Lagos Chapter, says it has plans to build a mini estate to ease the accommodation needs of its members in the state.

The State Chairman of the legion, Deputy Commandant General Akeem Wolimoh, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

NAN reports that the Nigerian Legion is a non-profit veterans’ organisation founded in 1964, whose members include people who served in the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The Nigerian Legion is an off-shoot of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

It is a statutory body, as outlined in the Federal Republic of Nigeria official Gazette No. 64 vol. 75 of Sept.30, 1988. It is designed to address the welfare needs of veterans.

Ironically, many ex-service men are faced with many challenges, the worst being lack of decent accommodation to retire to, after their service years.

Wolimoh, however, told NAN that the body was concerned and worried about the pitiable condition of most of their colleagues, hence the move to create a mini estate in Epe, where decent accommodation would be provided for members.

He said the body had recently sealed a deal to acquire 283 acres of land in Epe, a fast growing metropolitan area in Lagos State, to berth the decent accommodation for military veterans.

According to Wolimoh, there are many ex-service men who are living in one room in shanties and slums in very unfavourable conditions, as a result of lack of accommodation.

“We want to support the needs of military veterans, especially in the area of accommodation, because living in unfavourable conditions has negatively impacted their health.

“As recommended in the Nigerian Legion Act, the legion is saddled with the responsibility to provide hostels and accommodate those veterans, who are perceived to be in need of accommodation.

“It is also recommended that the legion shall provide necessary support to the families of fallen heroes and deceased ex-service men, in one way or the other,” he said.

According to him, the plan of the legion is to build an all encompassing estate that will have a resort centre, medical facility, farmland, market, among other things.

He, however, said that financial constraints were slowing down the pace of achieving the body’s lofty idea.

“We have, however, met with a financial mortgage institution and we were advised to register a cooperative, which we did in the name of Nigerian Legion Multipurpose Organisation in January 2023.

“Efforts are ongoing to get the necessary approval from the government and then bring in investors because it is a huge project that the legion cannot financially handle on its own.

“We already have the land, all that is remaining now is government’s approval; once that is done, construction will start,” he said.

Wolimoh told NAN that the first phase of the project would be the construction of 30 housing units, to be completed under the public-private partnership initiative.

“This is of utmost urgency to meet the accommodation challenge of veterans.

“It will enable us to quickly provide accommodation for 30 families and get them off the deplorable conditions, which they presently live in.

“By the time the financiers have completed all formalities, we should be able to provide enough accommodation that will address this challenge within a span of between 10 years and 20 years.

“The housing project that will provide decent shelter for ex-servicemen will be a continuous one,” he said.

Wolimoh told NAN that the idea to build an encompassing estate to be likened to a farmyard housing estate, was conceived when he was young.

“As a young man growing up in Epe, I experienced how wives of soldiers then from the military barracks in Epe, contributed significantly to stabilising the prices of food in the market.

“Whenever they came with their farm produce to Ayetoro market, which is the central market in Epe, the market price of farm produce would significantly fall.

“As a result of cultivating their farmlands in military barracks, they were able to harvest large quantities of crops, which greatly impacted on the society, to the benefit of the consumers,” he said.

The chairman said that it was a scenario worth recreating in the Nigerian Legion’s proposed housing estate.

“All we need are capable retired veterans, who can still supervise farming activities in a corporate way , where each one will be responsible for certain portion of farmland.

“So, the estate will serve as both accommodation for the veterans, means of sustenance as well as a source of economic relief to the community through their farm produce,” he told NAN.

Wolimoh said that the Lagos chapter of the legion would soon perform the ground breaking ceremony of the Nigerian Legion, Training Institute at Itokin, Epe.

“Within that place, we already have plans to build a secondary school and mini health centre for ex-service men.

“We need a health centre for ex-service men where they can be admitted, especially for those who do not have people taking care of them at their old age.

“This challenge is not only peculiar to Nigeria but also other countries of the world where ex-service men suffer because they don’t have family members to take care of them,” he said.

The chairman said that they had already invited people to register as caregivers and that enough people had already shown interest in the job of caring for veterans.

“In addition, we have about 350 registered widows of fallen heroes in Lagos State, that we reach out to, during every festival, to cushion the effect of the high cost of living.

“So, we have taken steps towards achieving this plan, we have already set up our machinery, especially in the aspect of housing and provision of medical facility.

“We are responsible for five military veterans on sick bed, paying their bills and buying drugs that are not covered by their NHIS,” Wolimoh said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Abia CP hails Otti’s commitment to fight against crime
    Crime
    By Leonard Okachie
Umuahia, June 8, 2024 (NAN) The
Commissioner of Police in Abia, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, has attributed the success recorded in the fight against crime in the state to God and Gov. Alex Otti’s immense support to the security agencies.
Onwuemelie said this when the officials of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Abia Council, paid him a courtesy visit at the command’s headquarters in Umuahia.
He said: “Security is in the hand of God and so the glory should go to Him for whatever achievements the command has made.
“The credit must also go to the governor of the state, who has assisted us tremendously with resources, ideas and suggestions.
“It is true that there has been a reduction in crime and criminality in the state, especially around the Umunneochi axis, but we have yet to meet our target.”
The state police boss said that the command would not rest on its oars until it had hit its target, adding that the people “still sleep with one eye open”.
Earlier in a remark, the Chairman of the chapel, Chief Obinna Ibe, said that the visit was to consolidate the collaboration between the group and the command in the effort to ensure adequate security in the state.
Ibe commended the exploits so far made by the commissioner in crime reduction within the short period of his assumption of duty in Abia.
He said: “Your coming to Abia is not just strategic but divine.
“You have shown dexterity and commitment in the fight against crime and security has drastically improved.
“We no longer witness violent crimes as was the case before your deployment and residents now sleep with their two eyes closed.”
He commended the police chief for the security presently enjoyed in the state, saying that it was coming at a time the governor was wooing investors to Abia.
He further commended the massive structural renovation taking place at the command’s headquarters, adding that the police need a conducive workplace to function optimally.
Ibe further said that “it is on record that commissioners of police in Abia are always lucky to get elevated to higher ranks” and prayed that Onwuemelie’s case “will not be an exception”.
He decried the occasional frictions between policemen in the field and media professionals in their line of duty.
He said that such disagreements should be discouraged, pointing out that both security and media personnel should see themselves as partners in the fight against crime.
He recalled a recent incident in Umuahia, where the correspondent of a television station was allegedly manhandled by bank securitymen, while policemen on duty “became spectators”, rather than protect the correspondent. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Ex-NSCDC boss calls for more operational vehicles for security agencies

    Security

    By Bukola Adetoye

Abeokuta, June 7, 2024 (NAN) Mr Paul Ayeni, a retired commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has urged governments to procure more operational vehicles for security agencies to strengthen their fight against criminal activities.

Ayeni gave this advice during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abeokuta.

According to Ayeni, many remote areas currently beyond the reach of security patrols have become havens for criminal hideouts.

He emphasised that functional operational vehicles, along with other security gadgets, would enhance patrol capabilities and enable operatives to obtain crucial first-hand information for necessary action.

Ayeni, who is the founder of Eco-Safe Guards Ltd., decried the high incidence of defilement, kidnapping, cultism, and robbery in rural communities.

“The rate of atrocities in rural areas is high due to the absence of security operatives,” he said.

He noted that some criminal elements had relocated from cities to rural communities to continue their activities, taking advantage of the lack of security presence.

“They move to rural communities because of the absence of security agencies.

“More patrol vehicles would enable these agencies to expand their reach and address civil and criminal matters in the villages,” Ayeni stated.

However, Ayeni commended the efforts of security agencies, particularly in Ogun, for their diligent work in combating insecurity.

“It is the best moment to applaud the efforts and sacrifices of security agencies and local vigilantes.

“They strive to ensure peace and tranquility, which instills confidence in the people,” he said.

He also commended the recent approval of about 10,000 successful applicants by the Police Service Commission for recruitment, noting that this would enhance the strength and capacity of the Nigerian Police Force. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
