Bus driver gets N500,000 bail over alleged manslaughter

Lagos, Jan 11, 2017(NAN) An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday released a commercial bus driver, Ganiyu Afolabi, on a N500,000 bail for allegedly knocking down a pedestrian on a highway.

The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbulu, who gave the ruling, after the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Ekogbulu said the accused should produce two sureties as part of the bail condition.

Afolabi, a resident of Oshodi area of Lagos, is being tried for dangerous driving and manslaughter.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offences on Dec.24 at Ekoro Road (the road leading to Command Secondary School), Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb.

He alleged that the accused drove his bus with registration no. FST 939 XR recklessly and caused the death of a man, whose name and address had not been ascertained.

“The accused drove his bus in a reckless and dangerous manner and crushed the man to death.

“The accused lost control while driving and rammed into a motorcyclist and his his passenger.

“Both were rushed to the hospital, but the motorcyclist died while the passenger is still receiving treatment at the hospital.

“All efforts to trace the deceased family were unsuccessful,” he told the court.

The offences contravened Sections 27 and 28 of the Road Traffic Act of Lagos State, 2012.

The case has been adjourned to Jan. 20 for mention. (NAN)
