Dutse, Feb, 17, 2018 (NAN) The Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Danbazau has urged the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to work with the traditional institutions to effectively tackle trans-border crimes.

Danbazau made the call at the inauguration of the state office of the immigration service in Dutse on Saturday.

According to him, these crimes include human trafficking, drug trafficking, arms trafficking and illegal migration.

The minister also urged them to remain focused in the discharge of their responsibilities to the people, especially in the issuance of passports.

Danbazau commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his tremendous financial support to the Ministry of Interior, which enabled the people to enjoy efficient services including security at the nation’s borders.

The minister expressed delight at the erection of the immigration service headquarters in Dutse, describing it as “an improved version with none like it in the whole federation”.

The Comptroller-General (CG) of the Immigration Service, Alhaji Muhammad Babandede, urged relevant agencies to continue to cooperate with the immigration service towards ensuring peace and security in the country.

He said the immigration service was working relentlessly to maintain maximum security at the nation’s borders, which still required improved structures.

He was represented by the Permanent Commissioner 1 of the Commission, Alhaji Salisu Kanya, at the workshop with the theme “financial procedures and record keeping”.

  • Inadequate grassroots mobilisation hampering success of CVR in Jigawa – residents

    NAN-H-30
    Mobilisation
Dutse, Feb. 15, 2018 (NAN)  Some people in Jigawa have called for adequate mobilization of the rural populace to ensure the success of the Continuous Voters Registration in the state.
In a vox –pop conducted by News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), they observed that the exercise was not granted enough publicity to encourage grassroots participation.
One of them, Alhaji Ahmad Muhammad, a politician in Dutse, told NAN that he was not aware that such exercise was going on in the state.
He said he had heard through the media about the progress of the CVR in other states but was not aware of any similar exercise in Jigawa.
“As I am talking to you now, I do not know the centres for the continuous voters registration here”, he said.
Another resident of Dutse, Malam Suleiman Umar, said there was the need for the appropriate authorities in the state, to embark on vigorous mobilisation of potential voters, particularly at the grassroots.
“The relevant authorities, especially INEC, should mobilise people to participate in this very important and sensitive exercise, otherwise a lot of people will be disenfranchised in the state,” he said.
Mrs Hadiza Muhammad, a female resident of Dutse, also said she was not aware of any CVR taking place in the state.
Hadiza therefore called for the mobilization of women to participate fully in the exercise because, in her words, “women play key role in Nigeria’s electoral process.”
A resident of Hadejia in Jigawa, Alhaji Adamu Suleiman, told NAN that he had been hearing about the exercise taking place in ‘other states’.
“We have been hearing so much that there is continuous voters’ registration all over the country but in Jigawa, we are not hearing anything,” he said.
Mrs Halima Musa, resident of Kiyawa Local Government Area, said there were many women in the area that had attained the age of 18, but had not registered as a result of lack of publicity.
“I urge INEC in Jigawa to please collaborate with relevant agencies like National Orientation Agency (NOA), the media, and others stake holders, to mobilise people on the importance of continuous voters’ registration,” she advised.
Contacted for his reaction to the development, Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Jigawa, Alhaji Shuaibu Karamba, said although they had been doing their best, INEC in the state never involved NOA in the exercise.
“Our core mandate for mobilization and sensitization on government policies and programmes are very crucial but we were neglected by INEC in Jigawa to assist in carrying some of their programmes.
“As major stakeholders in the electoral process, we can get to areas with difficult terrain to mobilise people to turn out and be registered but INEC here (in Jigawa) does not know our importance,” he lamented.
Efforts by NAN to get the reaction of INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Jigawa, Dr Mahmud Isah, was futile.
After issuing him a questionnaire he requested for, to enable him respond, he finally turned down the request, insisting that the issues raised were “sensitive”, and that “bureaucratic procedure” must be followed. (NAN)

  • INEC provides 10 additional continuous registration centres in Jigawa

    NAN-H-67
    Centres
    By Abdullahi Shugaba
Dutse, Jan, 11, 2018 (NAN)) The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has opened 10 more continuous registration centres in the Jigawa State.

Mr John Kaiwa, Head of Voters Education and Publicity (VEP) in Jigawa, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Thursday.

“Initially there were 33 centres for the exercise, so, with the addition of 10, there are altogether 43 centres in the state presently.

“The addition came as a result of outcry from the people requesting for additional registration centres to ease the process,” he said.

Kaiwa urged people in the state to use the opportunity to turn out en masse to register in preparation for the 2019 general elections.

He said that officials of INEC would go to hard-to- reach areas, for people to have the opportunity to be registered.

Kaiwa said that addition of more registration centres was not done in Jigawa alone but in all the states of the federation.

This, he said, was due to continuous increase in population of people who have reached voting age.

“I am therefore appealing relevant stakeholders, particularly the media and the security agencies in the state, to assist in the course of our continuous voter registration exercise,” he said.(NAN)

  • Diplomat urges youths to stop illegal migration

    NAN-H-5
    Migration
    By Abdullahi Shugaba
Dutse, Nov. 30, 2017 (NAN) Amb. Martins Uhomoilhi, President of Pan-African Institute of Global Affairs (PAIGAS), has urged Nigerian youths to stop illegal migration outside the country in search of greener pasture.

Uhomoilhi made the plea in a paper titled: “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in Migration’’, presented to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)  members at the Yakubu Gowon Camp, Dutse on Thursday.

He said that God had blessed Nigeria with fertile land for agriculture, abundant natural resources like oil and mineral deposits.

The diplomat said that in the course of migration, many Nigerians lost their lives in the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea.

Uhomoilhi said that there were many things for people to do in Nigeria.

“Illegal migration is associated with many bad and ugly things because the migrants are exploited at destinations and subjected to sex, slavery and prostitution.

“It leads to brain-drain and the future of the country and the migrants are mortgaged.

“The action leads to reduction in self-esteem as a result of sex, slavery and prostitution

“I was one time a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and also served as a career Ambassador to Switzerland and many countries in the world. I know what is happening outside the country.

“Please do not allow yourself to be reduced by others. Love yourself, love your country and fear God,’’ he said.

According to him, if you assume that the migration is good for you because of the increase in your income, think about the bad and the ugly trends in it.

Uhomoilhi said that the bad and ugly trends in it usually tarnished the image of the country.

“One will be remitting money to his dependants at home but is not possible for them to know exactly what he or she is doing outside the country.

“Therefore, I advise Nigerian youths to reject the offer by anybody that promises he will take them outside the country for juicy jobs,’’ he said.

Uhomoilhi commended the present administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari for the war against human trafficking. (NAN)

    Abdullahi Shugaba

Dutse, Nov. 24, 2017 (NAN) The Diabetic Association of Nigeria (DAN), Jigawa chapter, has appealed to government to establish testing and medication centres for its members.

The Chairman of the association, Alhaji Bashir Ringim, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Friday.

Ringim, who said that the centres could also be used for enlightenment, sensitisation and managing people living with diabetes, added that diabetes was more dangerous than HIV/AIDS.

The chairman said “the moment a diabetic patient has a cut or wound, it takes a long time to heal and in some instances can lead to amputation of affected areas.

“If one visits hospital where diabetes patient’s leg or arm is amputated and admitted, he or she will notice that the whole place is smelling too much for people to stay.

“We are also appealing to government to create separate wards in hospitals for our members, just like is done for people suffering from tuberculosis and other infectious diseases.

“But you should note that diabetes is not a communicable disease, it is mostly heredity, because most of us were born with the ailment.

“Therefore, one cannot contact the disease from eating, shaking hands or sleeping in the same room with person suffering from it.”

He also appealed to government, well meaning people and donor agencies to also come to the aid of people living with diabetes by assisting them or buying their recommended foods as prescribed by doctors.

“At least everyone knows we don’t eat any type of food like other people do,” he added. (NAN)
