    Wood
Lokoja, Oct. 20, 2016 (NAN) Mr Kayode Obayan, the Kogi West Chairman of Wood Loggers Association, has appealed to Gov. Yahaya Bello to lift the ban placed on wood felling in the state.

Obayan, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Thursday.

The chairman said the ban was affecting the wood business, adding that the business was gradually becoming a thing of the past in the state.

He urged the government to reconsider its position on the ban placed on logging across the state, saying those in the business and Kogi residents had resorted to buying wood from neighbouring states.

Obayan said the ban had crippled wood businesses among his members, and called on the state government to help mitigate their suffering.

He noted that wood sold to his members from other states were now too expensive when compared to the price they were selling before in the state.

Obayan said that the ban would also drastically reduce the revenue generated by the state government on wood felling and urged the government to lift the ban.

According to him, the union would still continue to cooperate with the government and support all its laws as regard wood business, while he thanked members for their patience over time. (NAN)

  • China’s Xi hopes Duterte visit can ‘fully improve’ Philippine ties

China’s Xi hopes Duterte visit can ‘fully improve’ Philippine ties

    NAN-F-7
    Ties
Beijing, Oct. 20, 2016 (Xinhua/ NAN) Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday that he hoped Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s “milestone” visit to China could help “fully improve” ties, which have suffered from to a territorial dispute in the South China Sea.

Duterte arrived in Beijing on Tuesday with at least 200 top business people to pave the way for what he calls a new commercial alliance, as relations with long time ally the United States deteriorates.

On Wednesday, to the cheers of hundreds of Filipinos in Beijing, Duterte said Philippine foreign policy was veering towards China.

“I will not go to America anymore. We will just be insulted there,” Duterte said. “So, it’s time to say goodbye my friend.”

The same day, about 1,000 anti-U.S. protesters gathered outside the U.S. embassy in Manila calling for the removal of U.S. troops from the southern Philippine island of Mindanao.

Duterte’s efforts to engage China, months after a ruling in The Hague over South China Sea disputes in favour of the Philippines, marks a reversal in Philippine foreign policy since the 71-year-old former mayor took office on June 30.

Xi told Duterte at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People that China and the Philippines were brothers and that the two sides could “appropriately handle disputes”, though Xi did not specifically mention the South China Sea row in comments in front of reporters.

“I hope we can follow the wishes of the people and use this visit as an opportunity to push China-Philippines relations back on a friendly footing and fully improve things,” he said.

The two countries would return to the track of dialogue and consultation in seeking a proper settlement of the South China Sea issue, Chinese vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin said.

“The two sides briefly mentioned the South China Sea. Both sides agreed that this issue is not the sum total of bilateral relations,” Liu told reporters after the Xi-Duterte meeting.

China claims most of the energy-rich South China Sea through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. Neighbours Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims.

In 2012, China seized Scarborough Shoal – claimed by Beijing as Huangyan Island and by Manila as Panatag – and denied Philippine fishermen access to its rich fishing grounds.

Liu said the issue of Scarborough Shoal was not mentioned and did not answer a question about whether Philippine fishermen would be allowed to fish there.

He did say both countries agreed on coast guard and fisheries cooperation. He did not give details.

Beijing has welcomed the Philippines’ efforts to embrace China, even as Duterte has vowed not to surrender any sovereignty to Beijing, which views the South China Sea maritime ruling as null and void.

Duterte on Wednesday said the South China Sea arbitration case would “take the back seat” during talks, and that he would wait for the Chinese to bring up the dispute rather than doing so himself.

Duterte’s congenial tone in Beijing is in contrast to the language he has used with Washington, having called U.S. President Barack Obama a “son of a bitch” and railed against U.S. criticism of his war on drugs which has led to the deaths of 2,300 people.

His hard-line drug war tactics have raised concerns in Western capitals about extrajudicial killings, but China has expressed support.

Beijing will also restore Philippine agricultural exports to China and provide financing for Philippine infrastructure, Liu said.

On Wednesday, Philippine Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez said Bank of China (601988.SS) had agreed to provide a $3 billion credit facility for infrastructure investment in the Philippines.

“The Chinese people are passionate about peace,” the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement, citing Xi.

Xi said that issues which can’t immediately be resolved should be temporarily set aside, according to the statement. (Xinhua/NAN)

  • Challenging pillar of U.S. democracy, Trump says he may not accept election result

Challenging pillar of U.S. democracy, Trump says he may not accept election result

    NAN-F-5
    Trump
U.S., Oct. 20, 2016 (Reuters/NAN) Republican candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday would not commit to accepting the outcome of the Nov. 8 U.S. presidential election if he loses, challenging a cornerstone of American democracy and sending shock waves across the political spectrum.

Trump’s refusal, which his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton called “horrifying,” was the standout remark of the their third and final debate and ratcheted up claims he has made for weeks that the election was rigged against him.

Asked by moderator Chris Wallace whether Trump would not commit to a peaceful transition of power, the businessman-turned-politician replied: “What I’m saying is that I will tell you at the time. I’ll keep you in suspense. Ok?”

Trump’s statement may appeal to his anti-establishment followers, but it was unlikely to reverse opinion polls that show him losing, including in key states that will decide the election.

“That is not the way our democracy works,” Clinton said during the debate. “We’ve been around for 240 years. We’ve had free and fair elections. We’ve accepted the outcomes when we may not have liked them. And that is what must be expected of anyone standing on a debate stage during a general election.”

Later she told reporters: “What he said tonight is part of his whole effort to blame somebody else for where he is in his campaign.”

A CNN/ORC snap poll said 52 per cent thought Clinton, the former U.S. secretary of state, won the debate while 39 per cent said Trump, making his first run at public office, was the victor.

Mexico’s peso currency, seen as a measure of Trump’s prospects, rose to its highest level in six weeks at the end of the debate, suggesting growing investor confidence of a Clinton victory. Trump has vowed to build a wall on the border with Mexico to keep out illegal immigrants and has said he would make Mexico pay for it.

Mainstream Republicans were quick to denounce the comment. U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a former Republican presidential candidate who has never warmed to Trump, said: “If he loses, it will not be because the system is ‘rigged’ but because he failed as a candidate.”

Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon who also ran for the Republican presidential nomination and now supports Trump, defended him.

He said Trump’s message was that “if there’s some kind of obvious fraud going on, he’s going to say something about it.”

“He didn’t say he wouldn’t accept it,” Carson told Journalists. “He said he would evaluate it at the time.”

Trump’s running mate, vice presidential nominee Mike Pence, said Trump “will accept the outcome” because he is going to win.

But Republican strategist Ryan Williams found Trump’s statement “deeply concerning.”

“You have to accept the results of the election unless there are grounds for a recount and at this point it does not appear that we’re heading for a close election,” he said.

In a debate that for the first time focused more on policy than character, the two candidates nonetheless lashed out at each other.

Trump, 70, called Clinton “such a nasty woman,” accused her campaign of orchestrating a series of accusations by women who said the businessman made unwanted sexual advances and said that both she and President Barack Obama were behind disturbances at his rallies.

He said the Clinton Foundation was a criminal enterprise and as a result she should not have been allowed to seek the presidency ticket.

Clinton, 68, said Trump himself had incited violence, belittled women and posed a danger to the U.S.. She said Trump, a former reality TV star, had in the past also complained that his show was unjustly denied a U.S. television Emmy award.

“I should have gotten it,” Trump retorted.

Trump said all of the stories of sexual misdeeds were “totally false” and suggested Clinton was behind the charges. He called her campaign “sleazy” and said, “Nobody has more respect for women than I do, nobody.”

Clinton said the women came forward after Trump said in the last debate he had never made unwanted advances on women. In a 2005 video, Trump was recorded bragging about groping women against their will.

“Donald thinks belittling women makes him bigger. He goes after their dignity, their self-worth and I don’t think there is a woman anywhere who doesn’t know what that feels like,” said Clinton, the first woman to win the nomination of a major U.S. political party.

The two candidates also had a spirited exchange on abortion, gun rights and immigration during the showdown.

Clinton said she would raise taxes on the wealthy to help fund the U.S. government’s Social Security retirement program. She said Trump, who Forbes says is worth $3.7 billion, would be paying higher taxes too unless he can get out of it.

“Such a nasty woman,” Trump said.

Trump and Clinton battled sharply over the influence of Vladimir Putin, with Clinton calling Trump the Russian president’s puppet and Trump charging Putin had repeatedly outsmarted Clinton.

Clinton and Trump walked straight to their podiums when they were introduced at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, once again forgoing the traditional handshake as they did at the second debate last week in St. Louis, Missouri. This time they did not shake hands at the end of the debate either. (Reuters/ NAN)

  • France says ready to keep troops in West Africa for as long as needed

France says ready to keep troops in West Africa for as long as needed

    NAN-F-4
    Troops
Paris, Oct. 20, 2016 (Reuters/ NAN) France appeared to have accepted that it would need to keep thousands of troops in Africa’s Sahel region for an indefinite period given the ongoing instability and preponderance of Islamist militants.

The region, a politically fragile area whose remote desert spaces spanning from Mauritania in the west to Sudan in the east host a medley of jihadist groups, is seen as vulnerable to further attacks after strikes on soft targets in Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast earlier this year.

That has been brought further to light after a spike in violence in northern Mali, where France intervened three years ago to drive out al Qaeda-linked militants who hijacked a rebellion in 2012 by ethnic Tuaregs and attempted to take control of the central government in Bamako.

Speaking to lawmakers, Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault sought to reassure regional allies that Paris would not abandon them despite pressure on its military that has seen it increase operations in the Middle East, but also on home soil after a series of Islamist attacks.

“France remains committed as long as the jihadist threat continues to weigh on the future of these countries,” Ayrault said at a parliamentary debate on his country’s overseas operations.

“What message would we be sending if we envisaged a reduction of our effort? We do not have the right to abandon our African brothers at the exact moment when they need us the most to consolidate the fragile balances,” he said.

After sending troops to Mali, the former colonial power has since spread some 4,000 soldiers across the region to hunt down Islamists, while United Nations’ peacekeepers have been deployed to ensure Mali’s stability.

However, the UN’s forces have lacked equipment and resources making a political settlement between Tuaregs and the government in Mali increasingly fragile and paving the way for Islamists and traffickers to exploit a void in the north of the country.

“We know it will be long and difficult (because) the national reconciliation process is taking time to come into effect, securing the north is slow and terrorist groups continue to destabilize the region by carrying out attacks on Mali’s borders at the entrances to other countries like Niger and Ivory Coast,” Ayrault said.

France will next week seek to discuss Mali when it hosts a ministerial meeting on UN peacekeeping operations in French-speaking countries to see how to beef up and improve their efficiency. (Reuters/ NAN)

Adeyinka said he had been organising free seminars across the state on fish farming, snails and piggery, added that these aspects of farming were cheap to maintain.

He urged youths to tap from his experience to stand tall among their peers, saying that with little money, small scale farming could be achieved.

Adeyinka, however, called on the state government to partner with Bank of Agriculture to get soft loans for youths in state to start small scale farming. (NAN)
