  • Eid: Sen. Abiru urges steadfastness, says all’ll be well

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 16, 2024 (NAN) Sen. Mukhail Abiru (Lagos-East) on Sunday urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in spite of the socio-economic challenges facing the nation.

    This is contained in his Eid-El-Kabir celebration message signed by his media aide, Mr Enitan Olukotun, and made available to newsmen in Lagos.

    Abiru also urged Nigerians to pray more and support President Bola Tinubu as he steered the ship of the nation at such a critical point in time of Nigeria’s history.

    “I know all will be well with the country,” he said.

    Abiru, Chairman Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, congratulated muslim faithful for seeing this  year celebration.

    He urged muslims to emulate Prophet Ibrahim’s submission to Almighty Allah’s will, calling  for religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

    “I congratulate my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters, and all Nigerians in Lagos East Senatorial District and Nigeria at large, as we mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

    “I urge us to live in peace and harmony with everyone, and join hands with government at all levels, particularly President Bola Tinubu, as he makes frantic efforts to stabilise the nation’s economy and ensure lasting prosperity for Nigerians,” he said.

    Abiru prayed that Almighty Allah  accept the worship and prayers of Nigerians.

    “We commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s act of faith, obedience and total submission to the will of Almighty Allah,” he said.(NAN)www.nannews.ng

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 13, 2024 (NAN) Sen. Mukhail Abiru (Lagos-East) on Thursday distributed food packs to numerous households in his senatorial district, ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

    The News Agency of Nigeria( NAN) reports that beneficiaries were selected online by nomination or directly processed in all the 16  local government and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) that make up the district.

    The packs, containing rice, beans, wheat, macaroni, semovita and garri, were projected to reach some 9000 households in the senatorial district.

    Abiru, Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, said the gesture was aimed at putting smiles on faces in the constituency during the coming celebration.

     

    ” I deem it fit to find a way to cushion impact of the hardship we have in the land, so today, 9000 people are to benefit from the division.

    “Same is going on across the entire district, with no discrimination, irrespective of your affiliation or language.

    “Some people are nominated by other persons, as far as you have a valid identification as resident of Lagos, you will get your pack,” he said.

    Abiru, who was represented by his media aide, Mr Enitan Olukotun, advised residents to support the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.

    The senator, who chairs the Southern Senators’ Forum,  said that the hardship was just for a little time

    He said most of the policies were inevitable tough decisions which, though came with some pain and discomfort, would actually take the country to the promised land.

    Abiru expressed optimism that his food packs programme would further cushion the impact of the hardship on Lagos East residents.

    He said it complements other interventions of the federal  government in ensuring food security, commodity prices stability and various others by Gov, Babajide  Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State.

    “If you look at Nigeria, democracy is growing, although we have our challenges, no doubt, we are hopeful that things will get better.

    “I urge everybody to get involved in nation building and perform their civic duties as citizens to support the government.

    “It is very important to have strong leadership to deepen our democratic ethos that will take us to the promised land.

    “We are hopeful that the country will be better under the leadership of President Tinubu,” he said.

    Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to Abiru for his continual support and benevolence during challenging times, promising to support him during election periods.

    Mrs Ayodele Souzan, one of them, appreciated the Senator and urged others to continue to pray for him to have a successful tenure and good health.

    Mr Ayobami Shakiru, another beneficiary, warned members not to resell the items as earmarked on it — Not for sale.

    He urged them to share among those who were not privileged but in need, in celebration of Sallah.

    Abiru had, in June 2023, initiated a quarterly Food Packs Programme, as a direct response to the economic challenges faced by grassroots communities following the removal of the petroleum subsidy.(NAN)www.nannews.ng

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 12, 2024 (NAN) Sen. Mukhail Abiru (APC Lagos-East) on Wednesday commended Nigerians for their steadfastness and patriotism, saying it had helped in deepening democracy in Nigeria in the last 25 years.

    Abiru made the commendation in a statement signed by Mr Enitan Olukotun, his Media Aide, to commemorate the  2024 Democracy Day.

    Abiru, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, and the Southern Senators Forum, urged Nigerians to be hopeful of better days.

    He stressed that President Bola Tinubu’s tough policy decisions were geared toward restoring the nation to the path of sustainable growth and development.

    According to him, there is light at the end of the tunnel, appealing to Nigerians to support and show understanding with the government of President Tinubu.

    Abiru said: “I join esteemed constituents of the Lagos East Senatorial District and all Nigerians in commemorating the 2024 Democracy Day.

    “It has been 25 years since we started the democratic journey.

    “The challenges notwithstanding, we have every reason to celebrate our growing democracy.

    “I urge all Nigerians not to despair but rather, to continue to seek ways of consolidating gains of the nation’s fledgling democracy.

    “I also seek the support and understanding of all Nigerians for our dear President in his patriotic quest of restoring our nation on the path of progress.

    “The pains and inevitable discomforts that come with such audacious policy decisions will soon give way, as we start seeing the positive outcomes of the government’s policies.

    “ On this auspicious occasion of democracy day, I pay tribute to the resilience and determination of our people, which have propelled our nation forward on the path of progress and prosperity.”

    He extended his heartfelt congratulations to every Nigerian citizen for their role in safeguarding and advancing our democratic ideal.

  • Community pleads with LASG on deplorable road

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 10, 2024 (NAN) Some residents and landlords of Wood Island Estate in Yewa community at Igbo-Olomu area of Ikorodu has pleaded with the Lagos State Government to repair the deplorable road in the area.

    They made the  in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Monday.

    NAN reports that the road connected about 10 communities such as Olorunsogo, Greenland, Accord Estate, Ire Akari, Oju Oro and others.

    Mr Sunbo Owolabi, Chairman, Wood Island Estate Community Development Association (CDA), said that the bad road had led to loss of property, extended travel time and high transport fare for residents.

    According to the chairman, the deplorable conditions of the roads has contributed to low commercial activities in the area while many communities are often cut off for several days whenever there is rainfall.

    “We have filled the road several times, but due to overflowing of water from canal, the road becomes impassable.

    “We are appealing to government, if the government can assist us in channeling the canal, we will be very happy.

    “We have been going through this problem for more than eight years, in fact there was a year a child was drowned,” he said.

    Also speaking, the Secretary to the CDA, Mrs Bimbo Olaoluwa, appreciated the state for the completion of first phase and embarking on the construction of second phase of Agric-Isawo road.

    She appealed to both the local and state governments to pay attention to Wood Island Estate, adding that the deplorable state of the road had caused untold hardship to people living in the community.

    “We are always in a sorry state anytime there is flow of water from the canal, we trek most time to our houses while coming or going out.

    “Government has done well on Isawo road but we need more interventions to reduce the hardship in our community,” she said.

    Mr Sunday Ukor, a landlord, urged Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to urgently intervene to prevent property and buildings from flooding.

    Ukor lamented that the cost of transportation had increased to more than 300 per cent due to the state of road and this, he said, had added more burden on them.

    “Sanwo-Olu is a listening governor, we need drains where water from the canal can pass in order not to destroy our property,” he said.

    Also Mr Olayiwola Adeniyi, a motorist, called on government as a matter of urgency to intervene and repair the Wood Island Estate road because “criminals use it to perpetrate their evil act because it is bad.

    “Most of us who ply this route have stopped due to unabated criminal activities on the road,” he said.

    Mrs Ajike Onasanya, a resident, also pleaded with the government to intervene on the condition of the road, adding that she had been robbed on many occasions on the road.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 8, 2024 (NAN) A lawmaker, representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Babajimi Benson (APC-Lagos), on Saturday inaugurated the two-kilometre Ori-Okuta Estate/Idi-orogbo Road, in Agric area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

    Benson, who is the Chairman House Committee on Defence, said the road construction was part of his campaign promises.

    He expressed gratitude to the residents for voting massively for him during the last election.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the road, which connects six communities, had been ravaged by flood, with residents facing hectic times around there decades.

    Benson promised to continue to bring the dividends of democracy to the people of Ikorodu.

    Earlier, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Lagos State Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) thanked the lawmaker for enhancing the living standard of residents,

    He commended him for strengthening and contributing to the growth of the party in the area.

    Ojelabi, urged the residents to believe in their federal lawmaker as he continued to fulfil his promise to improve lives and commerce in the community.

    According to him, the lawmaker has touched many lives as reflected in the principles and philosophy of the APC.

    He said that Nigeria would get better, as it was moving toward the promised land.

    “I urge residents to take ownership of the project, for the betterment of the people.

    “Party members should also re-validate their membership as the exercise commences,” he said.

    Also speaking, Murisiku Jaiyesinmi, a traditional leader in Ori-Okuta, appreciated the lawmaker for the quick intervention in meeting the yearnings of residents.

    Mr Anwoju Olumuyiwa, Chairman, Ori-Okuta Community Development Association, also promised that they would take full ownership of the road and ensure its maintenance, to make it last long.

    Also, Mr Gbenga Onayiga, a retired Director, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and  community leader, said residents had  suffered and spent a lot to repair the road before the lawmaker came to their rescue.

    “Today, I feel elated, because we have gone through serious hardship and spent over N10m in the past to put it in order before the lawmaker intervened.

    “We have put in mechanism to maintain the road, so that we can enjoy it for long time,” Onayiga said.

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 6, 2024 (NAN) Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA) has promised to partner with Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and Committee on Community Maternal Perinatal Death Surveillance Response (C-MPDSR) to reduce perinatal death.

     

    The council Chairman, Mr Wasiu Adesina, made the promise when he received delegates of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board in his office at the secretariat in Ikorodu, Lagos.

    He said the essence of the meeting was to discuss workable plans to kickstart a surveillance response on maternal and perinatal death also known as pregnancy-related deaths in Ikorodu Division.

    “Today’s meeting with the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, CHAI and C-MPDSR) is to discuss workable plans to reduce perinatal deaths.

    “This is a global initiative that is key to the identification, notification, quantification, determination of the causes and avoidability of maternal and neonatal deaths and stillbirth within our community.

    “The goal of this project is to put up necessary measures for the prevention of maternal and perinatal deaths,” he said.

    Similarly, Dr Veronica Iwayemi, Programme Manager, State Emergency Maternal and Child Health Intervention Centre (SEMCHIC) and a member of the board, said that the project was at its pilot stage in Lagos.

    Iwayemi said that the state and Ikorodu Local Government had distinguished itself as a pacesetter for accepting the project and by its readiness to render support for the team.

    “We are delighted to be received by the council chairman who also accepted to work with us as we embark on this special assignment.

    “This project is at its pilot stage in the state, and we are here today to sensitise and plan for the inauguration of the local government committee and wards sub-committee.

    “This is sequel to our introductory meeting, which was held last Monday with our honourable chairman in attendance.

    “We appreciate your warm reception, it speaks volumes of your altruism and love for the people of the LGA,” Iwayemi said.

    According to her, C-MPDSR project in Ikorodu will be coordinated by CHAI with delegates from the local government and wards who will work together to deliver on the mandate of the initiative.

    She appreciated Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of Lagos State for his keen interest in the well-being of Lagosians, adding that it was a pointer that the Governor’s THEMES Agenda was not leaving anyone behind.

    “Palliative materials may never get to everyone, but I am certain that our infrastructural projects and this health initiative will be beneficial to everyone.

    “Through this project, we will be able to track the mortality rate of pregnant women and their unborn children, identify the causes of death, and prevent future occurrences,” she said.

    Also speaking, Dr Jemilade Longe, Team Lead of CHAI, said the programme would be a robust initiative that would be beneficial to the residents of Ikorodu LGA and environs.

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 6, 2024 (NAN)A Magistrates’ Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State has adjourned until June 27 for sentencing in a case of theft filed against a 20-year-old man, Abass Apanpa.

    Magistrate T. A. Shotobi, fixed the date on Thursday, following Apanpa’s plea of guilty to attempted theft.

    According to the prosecutor, ASP Christian Okonofua, the defendant committed the offence on June 1 and June 2 respectively at about 10.30 p.m. at No 57, Oba Sekumade Road, Ebute area of Ikorodu.

    He said that Apanpa attempted  to steal an air condition worth N350, 000 belonging to ABF Enterprise Ltd.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 350 and 405 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Woman, 28, in court over allegedly stabbing another

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 6, 2024 (NAN) A 28-year-old woman, Simbiat Akinmurele, was on Thursday arraigned before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly stabbing a woman and causing her grievous harm.

    Akinmurele is facing a two-count charge, to which she, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Prosecutor, ASP, Christian Okonofua, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 24, at about 10:30 a.m., at No. 28, Otambala Street, Ikorodu.

    Okonofua said that the defendant broke a beer bottle and unlawfully stabbed one Mrs Kemi Oseni, the complainant.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 168(d) and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Magistrate A.O. Onalaja granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.

    Ikorodu (Lagos state), June 2, 2024 (NAN) Stakeholders in Ikorodu have urged Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to build the 4th Mainland bridge and work on other uncompleted roads before the expiration of his tenure.

    The stakeholders, who disclosed this in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Ikorodu, Lagos State, said Ikorodu had infrastructural deficit.

    “Ikorodu is lagging behind in terms of infrastructural development, we are not where we are supposed to be in terms of infrastructural development,” they said.

    Prince Lanre Balogun, former Lagos State Commissioner for Rural Development, said that Gov. Sanwo-Olu, as a competent administrator, would deliver on his campaign promises to Ikorodu division as he did during his first term.

    He urged the governor to build the 4th mainland bridge and other uncompleted roads before the expiration of his tenure.

    “If you look at the budget of Lagos state in terms of infrastructure, you can now apportion them into division.

    “How much do they give Ikeja, Epe, Lagos Island and so on, and check how much of budget is allocated to Ikorodu in terms of infrastructure.

    “That is when you will know that we have a lot of infrastructural deficit.

    “The 4th mainland bridge which he promised that he will deliver, as we speak, they have finished the paper work/master plan and secure partners,” Balogun said.

    “The Isawo road is under construction but has not been completed, Igbogbo Baiyeku, Offin-Oreta road, all need attention.

    “We urge the governor to call on the contractors to go back to site.

    “Infrastructural development is for those living, anything given now is for those alive, I urge people in authority to take note and intervene immediately,” he said.

    Also, Chief Kayode Olomo, Baale of Ojogbe area of Ikorodu, said that Sanwo-Olu started well with Ikorodu but he needed to do more.

    “For example, he gave us two commissioners during his first term. But we want him to replace the commissioner he removed with an indigene.

    “Gberigbe axis also needs the intervention of government,” he said.

    On her part, Princes Adebukola Osho, the Iyaloja of Ikorodu central, said Gov. Sanwo-Olu has actually done well in his first term, adding that she believed he would do better this second term.

    She urged residents and political leaders to mediate and probably lobby on areas that needed attention.

    She added that this was necessary because the areas needing the attention of government must be identified to attract intervention.

    “This is the first time we are having a parallel government in both the Local government, State and the Federal.

    “Let us keep lobbying; we will enjoy more dividends of democracy in Sanwo-Olu’s government,” she said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
