  • Ex minister urges Lagos govt to do more in education sector

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 30, 2024(NAN) A former minister of works and housing, Sen. Adeseye Ogunlewe,  says a lot still needs to be done in the education sector in Lagos, despite a noticeable improvement in standard.

    Ogunlewe said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

    He spoke on the sidelines of  the foundation laying of  a 100-student capacity hostel at Lagos State Civil Service Model College, Igbogbo.

    The former minister said there was a need for government to  distribute free textbooks, exercise books and writing materials to every student, to support them.

    “Basic education should be total and complete responsibility of government.

    “Though the standard of education in Lagos state have increased,  there is a lot that still needs to be done.

    “Free textbooks, exercise books and writing materials should be distributed as part of government’s  intervention to students,” Ogunlewe said.

    He said that such action by the state government would  reduce  out -of- school children.

    The ex minister also urged government to intensify school farming to mitigate shortage of food and reduce prices of farm produce as  was done in the past.

    Speaking on the hostel, he said the family donated  it so that the  principal, teachers and any National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member deployed would have  accommodation within the school premises, for effective service delivery.

    Ogunlewe enjoined the alumni of different schools to support in the management and maintenance of their infrastructure,  as it was not a job for government alone to handle.

    “The school land was donated by our great father for colonial and teacher training college.

    “Thereafter,  it turned into a civil service model college, but they don’t have enough accommodation for students, teachers and the principal.

    “That is why my  family decided to  build the  hostel for  the school in celebration of our great icons, to uplift  education in the community,” he said.

    NAN reports that the hostel was donated in  remembrance of two icons of the Fadugba-Ogunlewe royal families of Igbogbo kingdom.

    The families celebrated the 50 years remembrance of the first traditional ruler of Igbogbo kingdom,  late Oba Festus Ogunlewe (Fadugba 2) and 76 years  remembrance of late Amos Ogunlewe. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Ikorodu Local Government Area in Lagos State on Saturday says it will partner with the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), Wecycler and Sahara Foundation on youth empowerment in the area.

    Mr Wasiu Adesina, the Chairman of the council, made the commitment during the inauguration of Go Recycle hub at Ojogbe area of Ikorodu, Lagos.

    Adesina appreciated the initiators of the projects for the innovation, adding that, “it is an empowerment programme that has the potential to transform lives, communities, climate and our planet,”

    The council chairman in his quest to create the enabling environment, promised to embark on acquisition of 10 acres of land for large scale agricultural production and a trade fair to sell products at cheaper rate.

    “Through this initiative, we empower communities and take ownership of their waste management.

    “We will empower entrepreneurs to develop innovative solutions and encourage individuals to make sustainable choices.

    “This idea can turn a liability into an asset, a burden into a blessing, and turning waste to wealth,” he said

    Earlier, Mrs Folashade Oluyinka, representing the Wecycler, advised residents to efficiently manage their waste products since they generated tons of waste daily, from household trash to industrial byproducts.

    Oluyinka advised the youths to join recycling business, as a means of livelihood through monitoring of waste materials produced, as a result of human activity to get valuable resources.

    “The whole purpose of the waste management is to reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill, while empowering the people.

    “However, waste can be a catalyst for change.”

    “We will also empower marginalised groups to access economic opportunities.

    “We are not just empowering people to convert waste to wealth but we want to achieve other ideas.”

    She said that the other ideas include; building skills and capacities, creating jobs and income streams, promoting sustainable livelihoods and reducing inequality and poverty.

    Mr Seun Adeyeri, one of the youths, commended the chairman for his initiative and urged more youth to key into the re-cycling business for self-reliance. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 28, 2024 (NAN)  Prince Adeseye Ogunlewe, who formerly represented Lagos East in the Senate, on Friday urged the state Government to create an enabling environment for students to practice farming within schools.

    Ogunlewe gave the advice during the foundation laying ceremony of a 100-capacity dormitory donated by Ogunlewe royal families of Igbogbo, at the Civil Service Model College Igbogbo, Lagos State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the dormitory is being built in remembrance of patriarchs of the families, Oba Festus Ogunlewe and Prince Amos Ogunlewe.

    The traditional ruler died 50 years ago while his elder brother, Amos, died 76 years ago.

    The senator said that  practising farming in schools would mitigate food scarcity and increase food production as well as enable more youths to develop interest in agriculture.

    “During our time, school authorities used to give us portions to cultivate, our farms will be used to award us marks.

    “If this can be established again, it will reduce food shortage and food inflation,” he said.

    Mrs Anike Adekanye, Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District 2, commended  the royal families for the gesture.

    She said that the families had shown commitment to education development through  construction of the  dormitory.

    “I appreciate  Lagos State governor for giving  approval for the infrastructure as well the Ogunlewe royal families for being passionate about education.

    “I am very sure the student are very happy and the government will ensure it is maintained to serve its purpose,” she said.

    Mr Adesegun Ogunlewe, a former Head of Service, Lagos  State,  thanked Lagos State Government for giving approval for the building.

    Earlier, the Traditional Ruler of Igbogbo, Abdulsemiu Kasali, praised the Ogunlewe royal families for their impacts on Igbogbo.

    “I want to sincerely appreciate the Ogunlewe families for their impact on education, and other developmental projects.

    “I thank the late Oba for projecting education by providing lands for schools like Oriwu College, Civil Service Model College and Zumratul.

    “The legacies will live forever, ” the monarch said.

    Miss Anifa Ajibade,  an SS2 student, who spoke on behalf of the entire students  of  Civil Service Model College, said that they were overwhelmed by  the gesture.

    “They are great families.   They have given scholarships, free textbooks and buses for our students. Now, it is dormitory. We are grateful to them,” she said.(NAN)www.nannews.ng

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 26, 2024 (NAN) A 33-year-old man, Johnson Chinedu, attached to Highnewtint Limited was on Wednesday docked in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, for alleged breach of peace.

    Chinedu is charged with two-count charge bothering on fraud to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The Prosecution, ASP Christian Okonofua, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in 2023 in Lagos area of Ikorodu.

    Okonofua said that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace, by failure to refund the sum of N510, 000 and N450, 000 used to repair a Sienna bus.

    The prosecutor said that the Sienna he sold to Mr Isibor Taiwo, was handed over back to him due to the bad condition of the vehicle after repair.

    According to him, the offence contravened the provisions of sections 168 and 323 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Onalaja, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 25, 2024 (NAN) Some residents of TOMEC Estate in Ikorodu, on Tuesday appealed to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to urgently intervene in a face off with its Local Government Development Authority.

    They made the appeal in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

    NAN reports that the TOMEC Community Development Association (CDA), is made up of four estates, including T.O.S Benson, Toma 1, Toma 2 and Coker.

    NAN also reports that the face off between residents of the estate and the LCDA Chairman, Mr Lanre  Sulaimon, is for constructing an events centre by the only access road to the entrance of the four estates.

    The CDA Chairman, Mr Oladapo Bello, alleged that the LCDA chairman invaded the community with hoodlums to forcefully open one of their gates to outsiders.

    According to him, more than 80 per cent of  occupants of the over 25 -year old estate are civil servants and retirees of Lagos State Government, who now live in fear due to vulnerability to insecurity after the invasion.

    “I was called that hoodlums and area boys came to attack and invade our estate with dangerous weapons.

    “However, they also alleged that the council chairman was with them.

    “One of the security men also alleged that they were attacked, while one of them was taken away by the hoodlums.

    “We appeal to Gov. Sanwo-Olu to set up a  committee to look into the matter, so that people will no longer live in fear,” he said.

    Mr Muftau Tawakalitu, a 67- year old resident of the estate, urged  the governor to immediately set up a panel of enquiry to mediate and find a lasting solution to the disagreement between the council and the community.

    Tawakalitu alleged that he was beaten up  by the hoodlums, “my eyes turned red, till now, I have pains in my chest”.

    “This disagreement is simply over a gate we contributed our resources to build for security.

    “When we had issues on this same gate years ago, the then governor, Babatunde Fashola, came to see things himself and directed that the back gate be permanently locked  for security reasons.

    Also Mrs Folashade Bashua, a retiree and resident of Coker Estate, appealed to Sanwo-Olu, to caution the management of the council, adding that residents no longer sleep with two eyes closed.

    Responding, the LCDA chairman denied attacking any resident of the estate nor did he go there with hoodlums.

    He told NAN that the problem started when the council decided to build an events centre, to generate additional internal revenue on a portion of land owned by the council.

    According to him, the road is a public road and cannot be used by the estate alone.

    He explained that the only access road, which is the estate gate is supposed to be for the public use but was always locked, in contravention of the Lagos State Laws on gated streets.

    The chairman said he went to the estate to inspect the access road with members of his management team, who were trying to protect him against being  mobbed by the estate residents at the time.

    “I came inside the estate with my management team and the security men challenged us at the gate, asking us to pay.

    “They usually collect toll fees from everybody including the council officials without permission from the council.”

    “I told them the council could no longer tolerate erecting of  illegal gates without permission, so I called the police.

    “When i received their petition sometime ago, i called for a meeting, because I wanted to ask them to register their streets with the council but they never showed up.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 25, 2024 (NAN) A 30-year-old man, Apeh Christian, was on Tuesday docked in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, for allegedly stealing N1.17 million.

    Christian is facing a one-count charge of stealing to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Christian Okonofua, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between Jan. 2 and June 13, at Oasis Hotel located at No. 6, Ewe-Ala Street Ebute area of Ikorodu.

    Okonofua alleged that the defendant stole the sum of N 1.17 million belonging to Oasis Hotel.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Magistrate O.A. Onalaja admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 25, 2024 (NAN) A 41-year-old woman, Saidat Bankole was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, for allegedly assaulting her neighbour.

    Bankole is charged with felony to wit assault to which she pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Christian Okonofua, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 19, at No 8, Lamikan street, Anibaba area of Ikorodu.

    Okonofua said that the defendant unlawfully assaulted Mrs Taiwo Sodiq by inflicting injury on her mouth with gust blow.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 411 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Magistrate O.A. Onalaja admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 21, 2024 (NAN) A 32-year-old unemployed man, Olaniyan Lekan was on Friday docked in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, for an allegedly stealing catfish worth N2.5million.

    Lekan is charged with conspiracy and theft.

    He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Christian Okonofua, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 25, in Ita-Oloja Odogunyan area of Ikorodu.

    Okonofua said that the defendant conspired with others, at large to steal 1,200 pieces of catfish worth  N2.5million, property of Mr Dolapo Oladosu.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Magistrate O.A. Onalaja admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 21, 2024 (NAN) A 43-year-old man, Raymond Mukaila, on Friday appeared in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for an alleged theft of property and cash worth N999, 500.

    Mukaila is facing a count charge of stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, ASP Christian Okonofua, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between Feb. and March, at Agbalumo, Oreyo in Igbogbo area of Ikorodu.

    Okonofua said that the defendant stole aluminium frame valued at N286, 000 and aluminium window valued at N210, 000

    Others are three pieces of flue master valued at N16, 000, three seat cover valued N10, 500, pillar of iron pole valued at N22, 000.

    The prosecutor said that the defendant also stole a cash sum of N455,000 belonging toe Alhaja Kafilat Adebayo who is the complainant.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Sections 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Magistrate O.A. Onalaja granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

  • LASG urges residents to take cholera preventive measure seriously

    Ikorodu (Lagos State), June 20, 2024 (NAN) Mrs Grace Adesola, Director, Health Education and Promotion Board, Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, on Thursday advised residents to take preventive measures of cholera seriously.

    Adesola gave the advise in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the inauguration of Standing Committee on sensitisation of cholera in Ikorodu, Lagos.

    She said the disease was basically caused by what we eat and injecte into our body system.

    Adesola urged residents to ensure that their source of water was safe for drinking.

    According to her, some of the preventive measures would include: ensuring safe drinking water by boiling, chlorinating safe bottle water, maintaining proper sanitation and safe disposing of feaces.

    Others are, to stop open defecation, practice personal hygiene by washing hands with soap regularly, ensure food safety by preparing, cooking and storing of food against flys, avoid raw fruits except when washed by safe water.

    “If all these are  put in place, cholera outbreak will be curtailed in Lagos state,” she said.

    Adesola said that the board had intensified its surveillance and notification officers to go into communities to know the immediate causes of the disease and people affected, to match  with  records gathered from hospitals and healthcare centres.

    “After going through reports from our general hospitals and health centres, we have to intensify our  officers to go into the communities to know if more people are affected and the immediate causes.

    “So far, we have recorded some deaths, while some are recovering others  have been discharged from the hospitals.

    “We still want to inform  residents of Lagos state that cholera outbreak is real,” she added.

    According to her, 12 out of 20 local government are already affected at various communities.

    She added that only four cases have been treated at the General Hospital in Ikorodu, with no death recorded.

    Adesola said that the ministry had leveraged on various stages of sensitisation to initiate the public about the disease and how to curb its outbreak.(NAN)www.nannews.ng
