Lagos,  Sept. 25, 2017 (NAN) As part of the activities commemorating Nigeria’s 57th independence anniversary, the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAF), said on Monday that the sport would feature in the Lagos City “Suya” Carnival scheduled for Oct. 1.

Suya is a spicy shish kebab (skewered meat) which is a popular food item in West Africa and it is traditionally prepared by the people of northern Nigeria.

The federation’s President, Olatunji Jackson, confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that arm wrestling had been included in the sports featuring in the carnival.

“The inclusion of arm wrestling in the carnival will help to promote the sport in the country,” he said.

NAN report that the carnival is being organised by SuyaStops in conjunction with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Arm wrestling is a contest of strength between two people in which they sit opposite each other with one elbow each on a table, clasp hands, and try to force the other’s hand onto the table.

Jackson said:“The Suya carnival which is the first of its kind in the country, is an event planned by the Lagos Ministry of Tourism and Culture as part of activities to mark Nigeria’s independence.

“The inclusion of the sport by the organisers will, no doubt, be a major side attraction at the event.

“We will also use the opportunity to discover individuals who have potential.”

Jackson commended the organisers for the initiative and called for its sustenance in future event. (NAN)
