AMCOW, FG to celebrate 15 years of sustainable water resources management

Abuja, Sept. 25, 2017 (NAN) The African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), has concluded arrangements to celebrate 15 years of strategic partnership of meeting the goal of sustainable management of the continent’s water resources.

Dr Canisius Kanangire, AMCOW Executive Secretary, made this known at a news conference on Monday in Abuja.

According to him, the Nigerian government will host the celebration.

‘’AMCOW in collaboration with the Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture of African Union Commission, alongside regional and international partners will make this happen, ‘’he said.

He added that the 15th anniversary celebration was to showcase the achievements of AMCOW within the ambit of its mandate as the continent’s apex water institution.

He further added that the celebration scheduled to hold on November 27th and 28th in Abuja, would feature an Executive Council Meeting of African Water Ministers on the November 27.

He also added that the celebration would also feature strategic dialogue with development partners on the November 28.

According to Kanangire, AMCOW in the past fifteen years has contributed immensely to the realisation of the Africa Water Vision 2025.

He said the council had also contributed to the attainment of African Union’s goals of stronger cooperation, peace and security, poverty eradication and the economic development of Africans and Africa.

He added that the anniversary was aimed at drawing participants from governments, regional institutions, international partners, the private sector, scientific community, civil society and the media.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme for the anniversary is: “Towards Water Security and Safe Sanitation for Africa’’.

AMCOW, established in 2002 in Abuja Nigeria, promotes cooperation, security, social and economic development.

It also promotes poverty eradication among member states, through effective management of the continent’s water resources and provision of water supply services.

The council brings together water and sanitation ministers from 55-member states with the aim of providing political leadership, policy direction and advocacy in the provision, use and management of water resources.

It is poised to ensure sustainable social and economic development and maintenance of African ecosystem.

AMCOW currently represents the Working Group on Water and Sanitation of the Specialised Technical Committee (STC) on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment (ARDWE) under the African Union Commission. (NAN)
