Abuja, Feb. 13, 2017 (NAN) The Aquatic Federation of Nigeria will focus on the development of talents to replace ageing athletes, Sani Mohammed, the federation’s new Secretary-General, said on Monday in Abuja.
Mohammed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the federation would focus on grassroots development of the sport to get young talented athletes.
“As the new secretary I will search for talents at the grassroots and develop them into elite athletes.
“Most of our swimmers are ageing and we need to bring new talented swimmers into the national team.
“I believe that the upcoming 2017 National Open Water Swimming Championships will help us discover young athletes to train them for the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in Bahamas.
“We will open camp for outstanding swimmers from the Open Water Swimming championship.
“We will be looking out for young athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 to train them adequately for the Commonwealth Youth Games in July,’’ he said.
Mohammed said with many states set to participate in the championship, it would offer the federation a good opportunity to get to the grassroots and discover young swimmers.(NAN)
