Abuja, June 28, 2017 (NAN) Gabriel Adejumo on Wednesday in Abuja won the fourth leg of the West Africa Golf Tour (WAGT) Academy Caddies Competition after a three-hole playoff involving the top nine players.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition at the IBB Golf and Country Club had 53 caddies from Kano, Kaduna, Abuja, Jos, Ado-Ekiti, Port Harcourt and Owerri participating.

The competition is organised by the WAGT Academy with the purpose of catching young talented caddies who would like to become professional golfers and support them to grow their game.

Caddies from all over the country, with ages ranging from 12 to 25, are eligible to participate in the competition held on a monthly basis.

The competition is over 18 holes of strokeplay, and the top six players and those tied with sixth position compete in a three-hole strokeplay playoff.

After the three holes the scores are added and the winner is the player with the lowest three-hole score.

Three players were tied on level par after the three holes with a card playoff deciding the final positions of first, second and third.

Adejumo, a caddy at the host club, utilised his knowledge of the golf course to win while Silas Saleh and Paul Bamikole finished second and third respectively.

The three previous editions were staged at the Arsenal Golf Club in March and May and at Port Harcourt Golf Club in April.

The WAGT continues on Thursday with the B & E Match Play, the fourth event of the 2017 tour season, with the professionals slugging it out for the top honours.

No less than 40 players are expected to tee off in the first round of the four-day strokeplay tournament competing for a share of the prize fund of 50,000 dollars.

The event, which is sponsored by iCubefarm.com from Equatorial Guinea and Imanue Easykean Ltd., will see the winner pocketing a whopping 8,000 dollars prize money.

The tournament promises to be well contested with participants coming from seven countries, namely Zimbabwe, Gabon, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Spain.

The tournament ends on Sunday with a closing ceremony.(NAN)
