NGO expresses commitment to promoting waste management in FCT

Abuja, Jan. 16, 2017 (NAN) Mr Williams Osaze, President, Society for the Promotion of People`s Rights, an NGO, said that the organisation was committed to sensitising Nigerians to the importance of proper waste management.
Osaze told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in an interview on Monday in Abuja.
He said that the sensitisation was to educate the public on the importance of waste management, adding that such would help to promote environmental health in the FCT.
“For waste management to be adequately achieved, the organisation has commenced the sensitisation to proper waste management.
“Let the people know the need to support Abuja Environmental Protection Board, (AEPB) to promote environmental sanitation.
“It is also good for residents to ensure prompt payment of refuse collection service bill, this will encourage the board in ensuring that refuse are remove at the appropriate time in an environment.
“To ensure proper waste management; discharge your waste inside plastic bag and put it inside a waste bin, close the lid of the waste bin to avoid flies.
“Clean the waste bin always to avoid maggot. These wastes are to be collected on occasion either by the board or it cleaning contractors to be taken to the Gousa land fill site.
“This is what we want to achieve, telling the public on the right thing to do to promote a healthy environment.
“Our aim for the campaign is to extend the exercise up to the states level in the second quarter of the year.
“I believe the efforts will promote waste management in the FCT,’’ he said.
He said that waste management was a serious issue due to its human health and environmental sustainability implications.
Osaze said that any city with poor sanitation does not attract good people, investors and tourists and such cities tend to have poor living standards.
The president added that healthy environment would encourage investors and increase development in the country.
He added that the organisation was also planning to collaborate with the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS) and other development partners on sanitation and hygiene issues.
He said that the partnership would promote environmental sanitation activities in the FCT and the nation in general. (NAN)
