Training
By Kazeem Akande,
Lagos, Jan. 16, 2017 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Monday expressed its readiness to minimise road accidents by subjecting drivers in government and private sectors to regular training.
Mr Hyginius Umeje, the State Sector Commander of FRSC, Lagos state, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Umeje stressed the need for continuous training of drivers in government and private sectors to prevent them, from involving careless crashes on the road.
He said that many road crashes being witnessed in the country were caused by drivers’ negligence and their ignorance to modern road signs and regulations.
“There is high indication pointing out that there is need for government agencies to train and retrain their drivers.
“In 2016, about 180 government cars were impounded as a result of the drivers’ negligence and ignorance to some basic rules and regulations on the road.
“We implore Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and private organisations, to organise training for their drivers to avoid crashes and other traffic offences,’’ Umeje said.
The sector commander further said that the most prevalent cause of road crashes was speed which he said caused about 114 accidents in 2015 and 138 in 2016 respectively.
He expressed optimism that constant training would allow drivers to have enough confidence on wheel as opposed to a situation where some of them drove under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
NAN recalls that Mr Shehu Zaki, the Zonal Commanding Officer, Lagos and Ogun Commands, recorded 54 crashes in the zone during the last festive season.
Zaki said that the accidents involved 5,137 vehicles, 421 passengers, 24 casualties, 110 injuries and recorded 5,000 traffic offences. (NAN)
