Minna, Dec. 30, 2016 (NAN)The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has advised lecturers in the Technical Education Department of the Federal University of Technology (FUT) to acquire professional certification.
The Niger State Coordinator of the Council, Malam Usman Sani, gave the advice in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Minna.
Sani said that a lecturer can be relevant with a post graduate diploma in education even if he is a professor in the education faculty.
He stated that some lecturers originally were employed into engineering department but by extension has one or two courses to teach in the faculty of education.
“Teaching methodology of a trained teacher is different from somebody, who is not a trained teacher.
“We are advising, as a council that pays high premium on requisite, relevant cognate experience and qualification, for teachers to go for a teaching qualification.
He stated that teaching methodology should be an important criterion for teaching and the council will not downplay it no matter the circumstances.
Sani explained that professors that can not go for post graduate diploma in education, Professional Diploma in Education or the Nigerian Certificate in Education should take advantage of Post Doctoral Diploma in Education.
“For our senior colleagues that are professors and feel a masters holders cannot teach them, we have come up with a method they will be comfortable with,” he said.
According to him, it is their colleagues that will tutor them in their post-doctoral diploma in education.
He urged them to take advantage of the programme to update their teaching skills as the council had opened many windows of opportunities for them. (NAN)
