Minna, Dec. 30, 2016, (NAN) The Association of Nigerian Female Authors (ANFA), Niger chapter, has urged the state government to resuscitate the moribund Malam Abubakar Imam Library in the state.
The Chairperson of the association, Mrs Felicia Omolola, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna, on Friday described the dilapidated library complex as a shame.
NAN reports that Malam Abubakar Imam Library was inaugurated 25 years ago by Col. Lawal Gwadabe during his tenure as the Military Administrator of Niger between December 1987 to January 1992.
Omolola said, “It is a shame and intellectual abuse for a state to have such a shamble in the name of a library.
“Dr Abubakar Imam Library is in complete ruins and needs urgent attention by the government so that youths can take education seriously.
“How can the government portray education as the bedrock of the society and leave such a monument to be in ruins.
“This situation calls for an urgent x-ray into the state of things in this sector,” she said.
Omolola said the library had become so deteriorated that no right thinking person would want to go there, because there was nothing there to enhance or boost learning.
She said that books in the library had become obsolete, while facilities there were in total disuse as a result of years of neglect.
Omolola called on the state government to set up a committee to work-out a usable recommendation for the rehabilitation of the structure.
“This I think will go a long way in revamping the library, purchase of new books and, even e-library to meet contemporary standard,’’ she said. (NAN)
