Minna, Dec.19, 2016 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed 600 officials with 25 patrol vehicles in various Federal Highways in Niger to ensure the safety of road users during the Yuletide.
Mrs Suzan Ajenge, the Sector Commander of the Corps, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Monday that this would check drivers from driving recklessly.
NAN reports that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC) has also deployed no fewer than 2,000 personnel to provide security during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year festivities in Niger.
She said that already, the command had taken some measures that would prevent crashes before, during and after the festive season on the roads.
“Niger is in a very strategic state as motorists travelling to any part of the country must pass through,” Ajenge said.
She said that the volume of vehicles that plies the roads in the state was so enormous that “ the FRSC needs to be proactive to ensure the roads are safer for commuters’’.
Ajenge advised drivers to ensure their vehicles were roadworthy before embarking on journeys so as avoid any breakdown on the road.
She also called for full participation of stakeholders, especially, religious leaders in educating the public on safe driving.
Ajenge said that the essence was to sensitise motorists to respect traffic rules and curb road crashes.
She said that crashes would be avoided if drivers adhered strictly to traffic laws and regulations.
“We have since embarked on aggressive enforcement against overloading, dangerous driving, speeding, making phone calls while driving,’’ Ajenge said. (NAN)
