Enugu, July 12, 2018, (NAN) The Nigeria University Commission (NUC), has granted additional eight courses for the newly licensed Coal City University (CCU), Enugu State established in 2016.

The Chancellor of the university, Chief Chinedu Ani, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday.

Ani said the university got a provisional license for a period of three years and approval for eight additional courses to the 18 programmes the university was running before now.

He listed the courses to include Mass communication, Public Administration, International Relations, Sociology, Psychology, Religious Studies (B.A), Criminology and Security Studies and Taxation.

The chancellor said the courses would take off on full time basis from the 2018/2019 academic session.

Ani noted that about 300 students have so far enrolled for each of the existing 18 programmes and urged parents to take advantage of the opportunity and enroll their children.

He explained that CCU was the cheapest university in the country with fees of less than N200,000.

The chancellor expressed the hope that by 2019, the university would be fully accredited adding that the institution had quality lecturers and facilities.

“We are already meeting all the requirements for accreditation in 2019. We have conducive learning environment with quality lecturers and other facilities.

“The university is one of the best and cheapest in the country because we are not really a profit making institution but to create more admission opportunities for teeming Nigerians who cannot afford education elsewhere,’’ he said.

Ani however, decried patronage of private universities in the South East describing it as `worrisome’.

Chinedu argued that the same education parents prefer to pay hugely for in private universities located in the West could also be got in the East at a cheaper rate.

“The problem is that the people of the South-East do not want to pay for education but they forget that education does not come cheap anywhere in the world.

“Even education is very expensive in America and other developed countries,’’ the chancellor said.

He, therefore, urged parents and children alike to have a change of attitude and embrace education because no nation can grow without education.

Ani appealed to the Federal Government to extend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to private institutions to aid them fund some projects. (NAN)
