Punishment
By Toba Ajayi
Ilorin, April 24, 2018 (NAN) An educationist, Mr Thomas Olarotimi, has decried the attitude of some parent who he said usually insult teachers for punishing their children for wrong doing in school.
Olarotimi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Tuesdy in Ilorin that such parents were disrespectful in their approach to teachers’ action.
Olarotimi, who is the Proprietor of Best Foundation Nursery /Primary School, Ilorin, noted that some parents were fond of being rude to teachers for disciplining their children when they erred in school.
“Parents must stop insulting teachers for correcting their children. Children need to be corrected and not to be pampered every time.
“We cannot leave them to spoil. When they are wrong, we try to caution and check them so that they do not go astray, but some parents take it too personal.
“Some parents will storm the school premises and get angry with the teachers for trying to correct their children. It is very unfair and disrespectful for any parent to insult any teacher.
“Parents must understand and be ready to join hands with teachers to train children in best ways, with the understanding that teachers are parents also,” he said.
According to him, since the parents want the best for their children, they should have an understanding that teachers want the best for their students too.
“I would also want to plead with the teachers to not over exert punishments that may not go well with students.
“Teachers should study the physical and psychological behaviour of the students in order to determine the appropriate punishment. It does not have to be abusive or corporal.”
He also advised teachers against beating students for every offence, adding that they should learn to counsel students and be slight in their approach. (NAN)
