Tricycle rider docked over alleged assault on local government official

Ikeja, April 23, 2018(NAN) A 23-year-old tricycle rider, Andrew Ogwuche, was on Monday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating-up a local government official.
Ogwuche, who resides at Oke-Ira area of Ogba, Lagos, is facing a charge of assault, an offence he denied committing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 16, at Ogba Road, Agege, Lagos.
He said that the accused unlawfully assaulted the complainant, Mr Nurudeen Ajibade, while performing his duty as a taskforce officer.
“The accused `punched-out’ the eye of the complainant and inflicted injury all over his body in the course of his duty.”
Awase said that the complainant was sent to apprehend tricycle owners who had not obtained their permit to ride tricycle in the local government area.
“The complainant stopped the accused, and demanded for his ticket, an argument ensued and before the complainant knew it, the accused punched him several times and caused him harm.
“He was rescued by passers-by and the accused was handed over to the police,” he said.
The offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes a three -year jail term for assault.
The Magistrate, Mrs F.F. George, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000, with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until April 4 for mention. (NAN)
