Jos, March 20, 2018(NAN) Newly inaugurated board members of tertiary institutions in Plateau have been tasked to facilitate the accreditation of courses in their various institutions.
Mr Dauda Kums, Director, Higher Education, in the Ministry of Education, gave the charge on Tuesday in Jos, when he inaugurated the board members.
He said that the accreditation of the course should be a priority to ensure the recognition of the certificates issued to graduates.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the board members are to coordinate the affairs of the Plateau Scholarship Board, Plateau State Polytechnic, College of Education, Gindiri and College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies, Kurgwi.
“We want you to swing into action immediately. Many courses have not been accredited. Staff of many institutions have not been promoted for a very long time. You must strive to correct these imbalances,” he said.
In her remarks, higher education commissioner Elizabeth Wapmuk advised the board members to see their appointment as a clarion call to fast track the revamping of the education sector, so as to shore up its quality.
“Your appointment is expected to stimulate growth, learning and scholarly contributions toward making our tertiary institutions some of the best in the country.
“You must strive to add value to education; you must use your wealth of experience and knowledge to bring in new innovations that will enable our products compete with their counterparts the world over,” she said.
She advised the members to adhere strictly to due processes, and cautioned against personal or parochial interest that could be detrimental to the general interest.
Responding on behalf of his colleagues, Mr Kevin Kwaplong, Chairman, Plateau State Polytechnic Governing Board, promised that members would discharge their duties diligently.
He, however, pleaded with the Plateau Government to create an enabling environment for success by making resources available.
NAN reports that a total of 32 members were inaugurated with Mr Chom Bagu as Chairman, Scholarship Board, Mr Sylvanus Lot, College of Education, Gindiri and Mr Bernard Njin, College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies. (NAN)
