Sensitisation
Abuja, March 20, 2018 (NAN) Mrs Kawan Anjira, the President, Sedoo Initiative for Children with Special Needs (SECHILD), an NGO, has called for the need to sensitise people on cerebral palsy, a neurogical disorder.
Anjira told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja that the disorder was one of the commonest problems of children with disability.
She said that awareness needed to be created in villages and communities on the right of cerebral palsy children.
The Sedoo president said that children with special needs should not be discriminated or seen as disabled children.
“That is why we have taken it upon ourselves and make these children feel loved and appreciated in the society.
“Sedoo initiative is keen on touching lives and putting a smile on the faces of the children with special need.
“It is imperative that these children should not be left out in terms of education and other social needs because of their condition.
“And our society shouldn’t relegate them to the background because of their challenges,” she said.
Anjira, who is also the founder of the NGO, said that in some part of the country people believed that children born with these conditions were from the devil or spirit.
“Some societies believe that children with cerebral palsy or other type of deformities should be thrown inside a river or be buried so that the parents will be free.
“They conclude that the special children are not human beings and they don’t give them the chance they deserve, people only see them for what is not normal.
“But these beliefs and practices have negative effects on the psychological and social status of these families,” she said.
She said that these kinds of children should be given care and showed love by their families and communities.
Anjira said that such children needed to be given proper attention by the society in order to live their normal life and not to be depressed.
She also appealed to government to provide more support to children living with disabilities in the country. (NAN)
