Lagos, Jan. 3, 2018 (NAN) Mr Kolade Oshinowo, a renowned visual artist, on Wednesday advised the Federal Government to establish creative clubs in the 774 local government areas in Nigeria, to make the youths self-reliant.

Oshinowo, who gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said that creative clubs would enable the youths to think deeply and explore their talents in arts.

The artist said the clubs should be run by highly competent facilitators well-talented in arts, and should be well-paid by the  government.

He said that every youth should belong to the club, which should be split into various groups like beading, painting, drawing, sculpturing, carving, tie and dye, batik and others.

According to him, an individual will pick an aspect of the arts that he or she finds interesting, and once the beading group is done with the training, members can move to another group, like carving.

Oshinowo said that the youths, by so doing, would have been versatile in virtually all the aspects of arts, and would have varieties of money- spinning ventures at their disposal.

“At the end of the day, youths would not be stranded looking for white-collar jobs, as these clubs would assist them in discovering their talents early enough.

“We have not realised the power of arts in Nigeria; nobody engages in arts and remains poor because it opens up an individual’s creative capability.

“If the Federal Government can establish the creative boys and girls clubs, the youths will be seriously engaged; crime will be curbed and the creative economy will receive a boom.

“This will also generate huge employment opportunities.

“Government will be responsible for provision of venues for the training and the remuneration of the facilitators. I don’t think this is too much, compared to what it will gain at the end of the day,” Oshinowo said. (NAN)
