40-year-old trader arraigned over alleged N1.3m fraud

Lagos, 25, 2017 (NAN) For allegedly defrauding a woman of N1.3 million worth of clothes, a 40-year-old trader, Ijeoma Ogbonna, was on Wednesday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Ogbonna, a resident of Ipaja area of Lagos, is being tried for fraud and stealing.

The Police prosecutor ASP. Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the matter was reported by one Chizoba Francis at the Agege Police Station.

He said that the accused committed the offences in June 2015 at Satellite Town, Lagos.

According to the prosecutor, the  accused fraudulently collected womens’ clothes from Mrs Chizoba Francis, on the pretence of selling and remitting the money to her.

Ayorinde said that the accused sold the goods and refused to remit the money as agreed,but instead absconded with the money.

The offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Section 314 prescribes 15 years jail term for obtaining goods under false pretence.

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

She was granted N100,00 bail by Magistrate O.J Awope with two sureties in like sum.

Awope ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until Nov. 11 for mention. (NAN)
