Ibadan, Sept. 12, 2017 (NAN) The Oyo State Government has commended the School Governing Board (SGB) over the state’s rating in the 2017 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, gave the commendation at a workshop organised by Jericho High School in Ibadan on Tuesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was facilitated by Mr Michael Ale, the SGB Chairman of the school.
The theme of the workshop was “The Total Teacher: Use of Innovations, Information, Reformations and Inspiration to Transform the Learning Process.’’
Olowofela stated that the recently released WASSCE results indicated that the state had recorded 54 percent pass as against the 21 percent recorded in 2015.
“The new education policies evolved by the state government have helped to achieve the recent feat in the 2017 WAEC examination.
“I have been to other SGBs but Jericho High School’s SGB has been the best in areas of drilling boreholes, training of teachers and building infrastructure.
“Oyo is the intellectual capital of Nigeria as it is surrounded by higher institutions and best minds.
“This was the reason why government evolved policies and established the Universal Basic Education Trust Fund to make more funds available to run education in the state,’’ he said.
Ale, in his remarks at the workshop, however, said the ban on use of phones in primary and secondary schools across the state by government was unnecessary.
He said that phones and other gadgets were not barriers to learning but a leverage to improve on their academic development.
Ale said in order to achieve sustainable development in education, phones and other gadgets were relevant.
He also urged teachers to play a major role in imparting positive knowledge in school children, saying parents spend little time with their wards due to tight schedule.
“The roles of teachers are to know individual potentials of their pupils and understand learning approach to make them excel in their studies,’’ he said.
Ale added that the workshop was a starting point, saying there were arrangements for foreign training for teachers to boost capacity building.
Also speaking , the principal of the school, Mrs Helen Alabi, commended the facilitator of the workshop for his passion for educational development.
“Ale has donated two boreholes for the use of students, facilitated electricity supply as well as good buildings and other facilities, coupled with his philanthropic gestures,’’ she said. (NAN)
