19 inmates charged for deadly prison blaze in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, July 21, 2017 (Xinhua/NAN) Nineteen Ethiopians were charged on Friday before the Ethiopian Federal Criminal Court in Addis Ababa for burning Kilinto prison on Sept. 3, 2016.

The defendants, who are all prisoners at Kilinto, were charged for causing the fire that burnt the prison in which property worth 700,000 dollars were damaged.

The Ethiopian government said that 23 people lost their lives in the fire although opposition groups claimed the toll was higher.

The court adjourned the case to Aug. 11 for hearing on the defendants’ reply with a separate appeal for bail by the defendants to be heard by the court on Aug. 2. (Xinhua/NAN)
