Labourer, 50, arraigned over alleged theft of N10,000 bag in shop

Lagos, July 19, 2017 (NAN) A 50-year-old labourer, Mohammed Ibrahim, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, charged with stealing a travel bag worth N10,000.

A resient of Abule-Egba area of Lagos, Ibrahim, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and breach of peace.

The accused, however, entered a `not guilty’ plea.

But Police Prosecutor Victor Eruada told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 20 at Iju-Ishaga Road, Lagos.

Eruada said the accused came to the shop of the complainant, Mr Obinna Christian, and stole a travel bag valued at N10,000.

“People around the shop, who saw Ibrahim when he stole the bag, gave him a hot chase and was immediately apprehended and handed over to the police.”

The offences contravened Sections  168 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.

In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs G. O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case has been adjourned until July 27 for mention. (NAN)
